The manner in which 90? ferroelectric-ferroelastic domains respond to changes in temperature has been mapped in BaTiO3 single crystals using atomic force microscopy. Domain periodicity remains unaltered until approximately 2 ? C below the Curie temperature (TC ), whereupon domains coarsened dramatically. This behavior was successfully rationalized by considering the temperature dependence of the parameters associated with standard models of ferroelastic domain formation. However, while successful in describing the expected radical increase in equilibrium period with temperature, the model did not predict the unusual mechanism by which domain coarsening occurred; this was not continuous at a local level but instead involved discrete domain annihilation events. Subsequent insights from a combination of free energy analysis for the system and further experimental data from an analogous situation, in which domain period increases with increasing crystal thickness, suggested that domain annihilation is inevitable whenever a component of the relevant gradient that affects domain period is orientated parallel to the domain walls. Consistent with this thesis, we note that, for the observations presented herein, the thermal gradient possessed a significant component parallel to the domain walls. We suggest that domain annihilation is a general feature of domain structures in gradient fields.

Familial erythrocytosis, associated with high haemoglobin levels and low serum erythropoietin (Epo), has been shown to co-segregate with a sequence repeat polymorphism at the 5' region of the erythropoietin receptor (EpoR) in a large Finnish family. We have investigated the cause of erythrocytosis in an English boy. Sequencing of the cytoplasmic region of the EpoR detected a de novo transition mutation of G to A at nucleotide 6002. This mutation resulted in the formation of a stop codon at amino acid 439 with the loss of 70 amino acids from the carboxy terminus. The mutation (G6002A) has arisen independently in a Finnish family and de novo in this English boy. Patients with unexplained erythrocytosis and low serum Epo levels should be investigated for EpoR mutations.

The zero-range potential model is used to investigate positron collisions and annihilation with molecules. The Kr dimer is considered as an example. It is shown that (i) although positrons do not bind to individual Kr atoms, they do form bound states with Kr. (ii) A sequence of vibrationally excited states of the positron-molecule complex extends into the positron continuum, where it manifests as vibrational Feshbach resonances. (iii) These resonances give a very large contribution to the positron annihilation rate. Even after averaging over the thermal positron energy distribution, the contribution of the lowest Feshbach resonance exceeds that of the non-resonant background by an order of magnitude. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. The flow of carbon from plant roots into soil supports a range of microbial processes and is therefore critical to ecosystem function and health. Pollution-induced stress, which influences rhizosphere C flow is of considerable potential importance, and therefore needs to be evaluated. This paper reports on a method, based on reporter gene technology, for quantifying pollutant effects on rhizosphere C flow. The method uses the lux-marked rhizobacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens, where bioluminescence output of this biosensor is directly correlated with the metabolic activity and reports on C flow in root exudate. Plantago lanceolata was treated with paraquat (representing a model pollutant stress) in a simple microcosm system. The lux-biosensor response correlated closely with C concentrations in the exudate and demonstrated that the pollutant stress increased the C flow from the plantago roots, 24 h after application of the herbicide. The lux-reporter system therefore potentially offers a technique for use in assessing the impact of pollutant stress on rhizosphere C flow through the soil microbial biomass.

We report an unusual case of horizontal corneal Descemet's membrane break due to birth trauma. The patient had a difficult birth with trauma to her right eye and poor vision. However unlike the reports in literature, which describe these breaks to have a characteristic vertical or vertically oblique orientation in birth trauma, the breaks in our patient were horizontal. No other cause was found for these Descemet's breaks.

Boundary layer transition estimation and modelling is essential for the design of many engineering products across many industries. In this paper, the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes are solved in conjunction with three additional transport equations to model and predict boundary layer transition. The transition model (referred to as the kTkT–kLkL–ωω model) is based on the kk–ωω framework with an additional transport equation to incorporate the effects low-frequency flow oscillations in the form of a laminar kinetic energy (kLkL). Firstly, a number of rectifications are made to the original kTkT–kLkL–ωω framework in order to ensure an appropriate response to the free-stream turbulence level and to improve near wall predictions. Additionally, the model is extended to incorporate the capability to model transition due to surface irregularities in the form of backward-facing steps with maximum non-dimensional step sizes of approximately 1.5 times the local displacement thickness of the boundary layer where the irregularity is located (i.e k/δ∗⪅1.5k/δ∗⪅1.5) at upstream turbulence intensities in the range 0.01<Tu(%)<0.80.01<Tu(%)<0.8. A novel function is proposed to incorporate transition sensitivity due to aft-facing steps. This paper details the rationale behind the development of this new function and demonstrates its suitability for transition onset estimation on a flat plate at zero pressure gradient.
