By means of the mechanical alloying (MA) method, Al and Ti + Al coatings were deposited on Ti alloy substrates. During the mechano-activation processing, the substrate surface was impacted by a large number of flying balls along with particles of powder. The repeated ball collisions with the substrate resulted in the deposition of powder on its surface. MA technique produced Ti + Al coating with a thickness of 200 µm and Al one with a thickness of 50 µm after 2 h milling at room temperature. The as-synthesized coatings showed structures with high apparent density and free of porosity. The surface morphology of the MA-coatings was very rough. Annealing treatment led to the leveling of this uneven morphology. Annealing at temperatures ranging between 600 °C and 1100 °C gave different aluminide phases on the samples. In the case of Al coating, Al3Ti and Ti3Al compound were observed upon heating up to 1100 °C. In the case of Ti + Al coating, Al3Ti, Al2Ti, TiAl and Ti3Al were formed on the surface.

Experimental measurements of density at different temperatures ranging from 293.15 to 313.15 K, the speed of sound and osmotic coefficients at 298.15 K for aqueous solution of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([Emim][Br]), and osmotic coefficients at 298.15 K for aqueous solutions of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim][Cl]) in the dilute concentration region are taken. The data are used to obtain compressibilities, expansivity, apparent and limiting molar properties, internal pressure, activity, and activity coefficients for [Emim][Br] in aqueous solutions. Experimental activity coefficient data are compared with that obtained from Debye-Hückel and Pitzer models. The activity data are further used to obtain the hydration number and the osmotic second virial coefficients of ionic liquids. Partial molar entropies of [Bmim][Cl] are also obtained using the free-energy and enthalpy data. The distance of the closest approach of ions is estimated using the activity data for ILs in aqueous solutions and is compared with that of X-ray data analysis in the solid phase. The measured data show that the concentration dependence for aqueous solutions of [Emim][Br] can be accounted for in terms of the hydrophobic hydration of ions and that this IL exhibits Coulombic interactions as well as hydrophobic hydration for both the cations and anions. The small hydration numbers for the studied ILs indicate that the low charge density of cations and their hydrophobic nature is responsible for the formation of the water-structure-enforced ion pairs.

The experimental measurements of the speed of sound and density of aqueous solutions of imidazolium based ionic liquids (IL) in the concentration range of 0.05 mol · kg-1 to 0.5 mol · kg-1 at T = 298.15 K are reported. The data are used to obtain the isentropic compressibility (ßS) of solutions. The apparent molar volume (phiV) and compressibility (phiKS) of ILs are evaluated at different concentrations. The data of limiting partial molar volume and compressibility of IL and their concentration variation are examined to evaluate the effect due to IL–water and IL–IL interactions. The results have been discussed in terms of hydrophobic hydration, hydrophobic interactions, and water structural changes in aqueous medium.

The density of reactive carboxyl groups on the surface of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NP) was modulated using a combination of high-molecular weight (MW) encapped and low MW non-encapped PLGA. Carboxyl groups were activated using carbodiimide chemistry and conjugated to bovine serum albumin and a model polyclonal antibody. Activation of carboxyl, groups in solution-phase PLGA prior to NP formation was compared with a postformation activation of peripheral carboxyl groups on intact NP. Activation before or after NP formation did not influence conjugation efficiency to NP prepared using 100% of the low-MW PLGA. The effect of steric stabilization using poly(vinyl alcohol) reduced conjugation of a polyclonal antibody from 62 mu g/(mg NP) to 32 mu g/(mg NP), but enhanced particulate stability. Increasing the amount of a high-MW PLGA also reduced Conjugation, with the activation post-formation still superior to the preformation approach. Drug release studies showed that high proportions of high-MW PLGA in the NP produced a longer sustained release profile of a model drug (celecoxib). It can be concluded that activating intact PLGA NP is superior to activating component parts prior to NP formation. Also, high MW PLGA could be used to prolong drug release, but at the expense of conjugation efficiency on to the NP surface. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res 87A: 873-884, 2008
