The presence of local anisotropy in the bulk, isotropic, and ionic liquid phases-leading to local mesoscopic inhomogeneity-with nanoscale segregation and expanding nonpolar domains on increasing the length of the cation alkyl-substituents has been proposed on the basis of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. However, there has been little conclusive experimental evidence for the existence of intermediate mesoscopic structure between the first/second shell correlations shown by neutron scattering on short chain length based materials and the mesophase structure of the long chain length ionic liquid crystals. Herein, small angle neutron scattering measurements have been performed on selectively H/D-isotopically substituted 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ionic liquids with butyl, hexyl, and octyl substituents. The data show the unambiguous existence of a diffraction peak in the low-Q region for all three liquids which moves to longer distances (lower Q), sharpens, and increases in intensity with increasing length of the alkyl substituent. It is notable, however, that this peak occurs at lower values of Q (longer length scale) than predicted in any of the previously published MD simulations of ionic liquids, and that the magnitude of the scattering from this peak is comparable with that from the remainder of the amorphous ionic liquid. This strongly suggests that the peak arises from the second coordination shells of the ions along the vector of alkyl-chain substituents as a consequence of increasing the anisotropy of the cation, and that there is little or no long-range correlated nanostructure in these ionic liquids.

The electrochemical oxidation of catechol and dopamine has been studied at a platinum micro-electrode (10 pm diameter) in two room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]) and 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C(4)mim][BE4]). For catechol in [C(2)mim][NTf2], an electrochemically quasi-reversible oxidation peak was observed at 1.1 V vs. Pt with a back peak at 0.4 V vs. Pt. This is assigned to the two-electron oxidation of catechol to doubly protonated o-benzoquinone. Double-step chronoamperometry gave a diffusion coefficient for the catechol and the oxidised species which is 3.8 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for both. For catechol in [C(4)mim][BF4], a two-electron oxidation wave was observed at 1.0 V vs. Pt with no back peak. Another peak at less positive potential was also observed at 0.6 V vs. Pt in [C(4)mim][BF4] but not in [C(2)mim][NTf2] which is assigned to the adsorption of electrochemically formed neutral o-benzoquinone on the platinum electrode. The oxidised protonated o-benzoquinone is suggested to be deprotonated by the [BF4](-) anion, but not by the [NTf2](-) anion: hence adsorption of the neutral species at the platinum electrode, not the charged species. For dopamine in both RTILs, two chemically irreversible oxidation peaks were observed at 0.75 V and 1.1 V vs. Pt, and assigned to the oxidation of dopamine to the corresponding semi-quinone and the quinone. Potential-step chronoamperometry was carried out on the oxidation waves of dopamine in [C(2)mim][NTf2] and the diffusion coefficient of species in solution was calculated to be 6.85 x 10(-12) m(2) s(-1) and confirmed that the waves corresponded to one and two electron processes. A third wave was observed at 1.8 V vs. Pt which is attributed to the oxidation of the amine group to a radical cation with likely subsequent follow up chemistry. In [C(4)mim][BF4] a peak at less positive potential was observed for dopamine, similar to catechol which is assigned to the adsorption of the neutral quinone species on the platinum electrode formed by the reaction of the removal of protons from the oxidised dopamine with the [BF4](-) anion. New air-stable ruthenium(II) complexes that contain the aryldiamine ligand [C6H3(CH2-NMe2)(2)-2,6](-) (NCN) are described. These complexes are [RuCl{eta(2)-C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,6}(eta(6)-C10H14)] (2; C10H14 = p-cymene = C6H4Me-Pr-i-4), [Ru{eta(2)-C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,6}(eta(5)-C5H5)(PPh3)] (5), and their isomeric forms [RuCl{eta(2)-C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,4}(eta(6)-C10H14)] (3) and [Ru{eta(2)-C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,4}(eta(5)-C5H5)(PPh3)] (6), respectively. Complex 2 has been prepared from the reaction of [Li(NCN)](2) with [RuCl2(eta(6)-C10H14)](2), whereas complex 5 has been prepared by the treatment of [RuCl{eta(3)-N,C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,6}(PPh3)] (4) with [Na(C5H5)](n). Both 2 and 5 are formally 18-electron ruthenium(II) complexes in which the monoanionic potentially tridentate coordinating ligand NCN is eta(2)-C,N-bonded, In solution (halocarbon solvent at room temperature or in aromatic solvents at elevated temperature), the intramolecular rearrangements of 2 and 5 afford complexes 3 and 6, respectively. This is a result of a shift of the metal-C-aryl bond from position-1 to position-3 on the aromatic ring of the NCN ligand. The mechanism of the isomerization is proposed to involve a sequence of intramolecular oxidative addition and reductive elimination reactions of both aromatic and aliphatic C-H bonds. This is based on results from deuterium labeling, spectroscopic studies, and some kinetic experiments. The mechanism is proposed to contain fully reversible steps in the case of 5, but a nonreversible step involving oxidative addition of a methyl NCH2-H bond in the case of 2. The solid-state structures of complexes 2, 3, 5, and 6 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. A new dinuclear 1,4-phenylene-bridged bisruthenium(II) complex, [1,4-{RuCl(eta(6)-C10H14)}(2){C-6(CH2NMe2)(4)-2,3,5,6-C,N,C',N'}] (9) has also been prepared from the dianionic ligand [C-6(CH2NMe2)(4)-2,3,5,6](2-) (C2N4). The C2N4 ligand is in an eta(2)-C,N-eta(2)-C',N'-bis(bidentate) bonding mode. Compound 9 does not isomerize in solution (halocarbon solvent), presumably because of the absence of an accessible C-aryl-H bond. Complex 9 could not be isolated in an analytically pure form, probably because of its high sensitivity to air and very low solubility, which precludes recrystallization.

The new anionic functionalized aryldiamine ligands [2,6-(Me(2)NCH(2))(2)-4-R-C6H2](-) (R = Me(3)SiC=C, C6H5, Me(3)Si), formally derived from [2,6-(Me(2)NCH(2))(2)C6H3](-), have been prepared as their lithium compounds. The compound [Li{2,6-(Me(2)NCH(2))(2)-4-Ph-C6H2}](2) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c (no. 15) with a = 13.1225(5), b = 13.5844(7), c = 15.9859(12) Angstrom, beta = 105.329(5)degrees, V = 3264.0(3)Angstrom(3), Z = 4. The structure refinement converged to R(1) = 0.0374 for 2037 observed reflections [F-o>4 sigma(F-o)] and wR(2) = 0.0922 for 2560 unique data. The organolithium compounds have been used in transmetalation reactions to give the corresponding functionalized organoruthenium(II) complexes [Ru-II{2,6-(Me(2)NCH(2))(2)-4-R-C6H2}(terpy)]Cl-+(-) (terpy = 2,2';6',2 ''-terpyridine). The Ru-II species with R = HC = C has also been synthesized.

The pathways of biotransformation of 4-fluorobiphenyl (4FBP) by the ectomycorrhizal fungus Tylospora fibrilosa and several other mycorrhizal fungi were investigated by using (19)F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in combination with (14)C radioisotope-detected high-performance liquid chromatography ((14)C-HPLC). Under the conditions used in this study T. fibrillosa and some other species degraded 4FBP. (14)C-HPLC profiles indicated that there were four major biotransformation products, whereas (19)F NMR showed that there were six major fluorine-containing products. We confirmed that 4-fluorobiphen-4'-ol and 4-fluorobiphen-3'-ol were two of the major products formed, but no other products were conclusively identified. There was no evidence for the expected biotransformation pathway (namely, meta cleavage of the less halogenated ring), as none of the expected products of this route were found. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing intermediates formed during mycorrhizal degradation of halogenated biphenyls.

Systematic experiments have been carried out on the thermal and rheological behaviour of the ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl} imide, [C(4)mim][NTf2], and, for the first time, on the forced convective heat transfer of an ionic liquid under the laminar flow conditions. The results show that the thermal conductivity of the ionic liquid is similar to 0.13 W m(-1) K-1, which is almost independent of temperature between 25 and 40 degrees C. Rheological measurements show that the [C(4)mim][NTf2] liquid is a Newtonian fluid with its shear viscosity decreasing with increasing temperature according to the exponential law over a temperature range of 20-90 degrees C. The convective heat transfer experiments demonstrate that the thermal entrance length of the ionic liquid is very large due to its high viscosity and low thermal conductivity. The convective heat transfer coefficient is observed to be much lower than that of distilled water under the same conditions. The convective heat transfer data are also found to fit well to the convectional Shah's equation under the conditions of this work. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this work we examine, for the first time, the molar conductivity behavior of the deeply supercooled room temperature ionic liquid [C4mim][NTf2] in the temperature, pressure and volume thermodynamic space in terms of density scaling (TVγ)−1 combined with the equation of state (EOS). The exponent γσ determined from the Avramov model analysis is compared with the coefficient obtained from the viscosity studies carried out at moderate temperatures. Therefore, the experimental results presented herein provide the answer to the long-standing question regarding the validity of thermodynamic scaling of ionic liquids over a wide temperature range, i.e. from the normal liquid state to the glass transition point. Finally, we investigate the relationship between the dynamic and thermodynamic properties of [C4mim][NTf2] represented by scaling exponent γ and Grüneisen constant γG, respectively.
