The synthesis of [Rh-2(COD)(2)(dppm)(mu(2)-Cl)] BF4 (1) (COD) 1,5-cyclooctadiene, dppm) bis(diphenylphosphino) methane) from simple precursors is reported. This is a rare example of a dirhodium complex with an open [Rh-2(mu(2)-dppm)(mu(2)-Cl)] core. The complex has been used to affect the hydrogenation of styrene and benzo[b] thiophene with total selectivity and competitive rates of reaction. The recycling of the catalyst has been achieved by the entrapment of 1 in silica by a sol-gel method to produce a recyclable solid catalyst.

Ta2O5-SiO2 catalysts were prepared by a sol-gel method using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and tantalum (V) ethoxide as the sources of silicon and tantalum, and two families of quaternary ammonium salts, [CnH(2n+1)(CH3)(3)N]Br (n = 14, 16, 18) and [(CnH(2n+1))(4)N]Br (n = 10, 12, 16, 18) as surfactants. The catalysts were compared for the selective suffoxidation of 4,6-dimethyl-2-thiomethylpyrimidine using peroxide as an oxidising agent in a range of ionic liquids and organic solvents. The sol-gel catalysts were also compared with tantalum on MCM-41 prepared by grafting. The catalysts were characterized from adsorption-desorption isotherms of N-2, XRD patterns, small-angle X-ray scattering, IR spectra from adsorbed pyridine and CDCl3, XPS spectra, and Si-29 magic angle spinning (MAS) NNIR experiments. The effect of recycling on the catalyst leaching and selectivity/activity was also studied. High activities and selectivities were found in [NTf2](-) based ionic liquids and organic solvents with good recyclability of the catalyst. Tantalum was found in the solution after reaction; however, this was determined to be due to entrapment of catalyst particulates, as opposed to leaching of the active metal. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. A brief overview of work carried out by this group on thick (> 1 mu m), optically clear, robust titania films prepared by a sol-gel method, as well as new results regarding these films, are described. Such films are very active as photocatalysts and able to destroy stearic acid with a quantum yield of 0.32%. The activity of such films is largely unaffected by annealing temperatures below 760 degrees C, but is drastically reduced above this temperature. The drop in photocatalyst activity of such films as a function of annealing temperature appears to correlate well with the change in porosity of the films and suggests that the latter parameter is very important in deciding the overall activity of such films. The importance of porosity in semiconductor photocatalysed cold combustion may be due to the effect it has on access of oxygen to the active sites, rather like the effect the position of a fire grate (open or closed) has on the rate of burning, i.e., hot combustion, that takes place in a fireplace.

BaCe1-xYxO3-δ (BCY) and BaCe0.8-yZryY0.2O3-δ (BCZY) compounds were synthesised via an aqueous sol-gel method and two different calcination processes were tested for BCZY synthesis. The highest hydration capacity was recorded for the compound that contained the highest Y-doping level (x=0.2). Further substitution of Ce4+ by Zr4+ enhanced the chemical stability especially for y≥0.2, although decreased proton conductivity. However, BaCe0.6-0.2Zr0.2Y0.2O2.9 (BCZ20Y20) which presented adequate water uptake and high chemical stability in presence of CO2, was found to be the best candidate compound to be used in applications such as electrocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation.

Copper-manganese spinel containing anodes were synthesized by a facile sol-gel method and evaluated in lithium-ion battery applications for the first time. The synergistic effects between copper-manganese and the aqueous binder (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose) provided a high specific capacity and excellent cycling performance. It was found that the specific capacity of the copper-manganese spinel remained at 608 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g−1. Furthermore, a relatively high reversible capacity of 278 mAh g−1 could be obtained at a current density of 2000 mA g−1, indicating a good rate capability. These studies suggest that copper-manganese spinel is a promising material for lithium-ion battery applications due to a combination of good electrochemical performance and low cost.

A 10 mol%Sc2O3, 1 mol%CeO2 stabilized-ZrO2 (SSZ) powder was successfully prepared using the sol-gel method. Subsequent SSZ electrolyte pellets were prepared by tape casting technique and sintered at 1400 °C, 1450 °C, 1500 °C, 1550 °C and 1600 °C. These were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). SSZ showed a pure cubic phase after sintering, the grain size of SSZ increased with the increase of sintering temperature. The SSZ sintered at 1550 °C showed the highest ion conductivity. The maximum power densities of Ni-SSZ/SSZ/La0.8Sr0.2MnO3-δ (LSM)-SSZ single cells sintered at 1550 °C were 0.18, 0.36, 0.51 and 0.72 W cm-2 at 650, 700, 750 and 800 °C, respectively. The polarization resistance (Rp) of the single cell attained 0.201 Ω cm2 at 800 °C.

Organic gels have been synthesized by sol–gel polycondensation of phenol (P) and formaldehyde (F) catalyzed by sodium carbonate (C). The effect of synthesis parameters such as phenol/catalyst ratio (P/C), solvent exchange liquid and drying method, on the porous structure of the gels have been investigated. The total and mesopore volumes of the PF gels increased with increasing P/C ratio in the range of P/C B 8, after this both properties started to decrease with P/C ratio for P/C[8 and the gel with P/C = 8 showed the highest total and mesopore volumes of 1.281 and 1.279 cm3 g-1 respectively. The gels prepared by freeze drying possessed significantly higher porosities than the vacuum dried gels. The pore volume and average pore diameter of the freeze dried gels were significantly higher than those of the vacuum dried gels. T-butanol emerged as the preferred solvent for the removal of water from the PF hydrogel prior to drying, as significantly higher pore volumes and specific surface areas were obtained in the corresponding dried gels. The results showed that freeze drying with t-butanol and lower P/C ratios were favourable conditions for the synthesis of highly mesoporous phenol–formaldehyde gels.

Two different mesoporous films of TiO2 were coated onto a QCM disc and fired at 450o C for 30 min. The first film was derived from a sol-gel paste that was popular in the early days of dye-sensitised solar cell, i.e. dssc, research, a TiO2(sg) film. The other was a commercial colloidal paste used to make examples of the current dssc cell; a TiO2(ds) film. A QCM was used to determine the mass of the TiO2 film deposited on each disc and the increase in the mass of the film when immersed in water/glycerol solutions with wt% values spanning the range 0-70%. The results of this work reveal that with both TiO2 mesoporous films the solution fills the film's pores and acts as a rigid mass, thereby allowing the porosity of each film to be calculated as: 59.1% and 71.6% for the TiO2(sg) and TiO2(ds) films, respectively. These results, coupled with surface area data, allowed the pore radii of the two films to be calculated as: 9.6 and 17.8 nm, respectively. This method is then simplified further, to just a few frequency measurements in water and only air to reveal the same porosity values. The value of the latter ‘one point’ method for making porosity measurements is discussed briefly.

A new method of sol-gel polymer template synthesis of mesoporous catalytic thin films has been proposed which allows controlling the chemical nature of the film, the porosity, thickness and loading with an active species. The mesoporous films with a long-order structure can be obtained in a narrow range of surfactant-to-metal precursor molar ratios from 0.006 to 0.009. The catalytic film thickness was varied from 300 to 1000 nm while providing a uniform catalyst distribution with a desired catalyst loading (1 wt. % Au nanoparticles) throughout the film. The films were characterized by TEM, SEM, ethanol adsorption and contact angle measurements. The calcination of the as-synthesized films at 573 K reduced Ti4+ sites to Ti3+. A 300 nm thick Au-containing film showed an initial TOF of 1.4 s(-1) and a selectivity towards unsaturated alcohols as high as 90% in the hydrogenation of citral. Thicker films demonstrated a high selectivity towards the saturated aldehyde (above 55%) and a lower intrinsic catalytic activity (initial TOF of 0.7-0.9 s(-1)) in the absence of internal diffusion limitations.

A one-pot sol-gel synthesis method has been developed for the incorporation of metal nanoparticles into mesoporous oxide thin films deposited on various plane substrates by spin-coating and on the inner surface of fused silica capillaries by dip-coating. The size, the metal loading and the stoichiometry of the metal nanoparticles could be precisely controlled by following this methodology. In the first step, polymer stabilized Pt50Sn50 and Pt90Sn10 nanoparticles were obtained by a solvent-reduction method. Then, the nanoparticles were added to a metal oxide precursor sol, which was destabilized by solvent evaporation. After calcination, the obtained materials were tested in the hydrogenation of citral in both batch and continuous modes. The highest selectivity of 30% towards the unsaturated alcohols was obtained over supported Pt90Sn10 nanoparticles with a preferential formation of the cis-isomer (nerol) due to a unique confinement of the bimetallic nanoparticles in the mesoporous framework. The selectivity towards the unsaturated alcohols was further improved to 56% over the PtRu5Sn nanoparticles supported by impregnation onto mesoporous silica films. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Chemoenzymatic dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) of rac-1-phenyl ethanol into R-1-phenylethanol acetate was investigated with emphasis on the minimization of side reactions. The organometallic hydrogen transfer (racemization) catalyst was varied, and this was observed to alter the rate and extent of oxidation of the alcohol to form ketone side products. The performance of highly active catalyst [(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) IrCl2(1-benzyl,3-methyl-imidazol-2-ylidene)] was found to depend on the batch of lipase B used. The interaction between the bio- and chemo-catalysts was reduced by employing physical entrapment of the enzyme in silica using a sol-gel process. The nature of the gelation method was found to be important, with an alkaline method preferred, as an acidic method was found to initiate a further side reaction, the acid catalyzed dehydration of the secondary alcohol. The acidic gel was found to be a heterogeneous solid acid.
