Background: One basic problem found during rehabilitation is that people with brain injuries lack awareness of their difficulties. Research into this phenomenon has often disregarded the voices of those affected by the trauma and do not give an insider's perspective on the process through which a person with a brain injury develops awareness of their difficulties.

Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) is an intervention used to treat opioid (heroin) dependence. Several investigators have found that MMT is effective in reducing heroin use and other behaviors; however, a disproportionate number of MMT clients leave treatment prematurely. Moreover, MMT outcome variables are often limited in terms of their measurement. Utilizing an integrated theoretical framework of social control and stigma, we focused on the experiences of methadone maintenance from the perspective of clients. We pooled interview data from four qualitative studies in two jurisdictions and found linkages between social control and institutional stigma that serve to reinforce "addict" identities, expose undeserving customers to the public gaze, and encourage clients to be passive recipients of treatment. We discuss the implications for recovery and suggest recommendations for change.

Obtaining as much particulate material as possible from questioned items is desirable in forensic science as this allows a range of analyses to be undertaken and the retention of material for others to check. A method of maximising particulate recovery is described using a kidnap case, where minimal staining on clothing (socks) remained as possible indications of where the victim had been held captive. Police intelligence led to a hostage scene that was sampled. Brushing of the socks recovered about 50 sand grains with some silt: ultrasonic agitation and centrifuging recovered over 300 grains of sand, silt and clay. These were visually compared to scene and control samples, allowing exclusion of 52 samples and the retention of one comparison sample as well as other possibles, saving time and money, but maximising sample quantity and quality. © 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.

The diffusion-controlled response and recovery behaviour of a naked optical film sensor (i.e., with no protective membrane) with a hyperbolic-type response [i.e., S0/S = (1 + Kc), where S is the measured value of the absorbance or luminescence intensity of one form of the sensor dye in the presence of the analyte, S0 is the observed value of S in the absence of analyte and K is a constant] to changes in analyte concentration, c, in a system under test is approximated using a simple model, and described more accurately using a numerical model; in both models it is assumed that the system under test represents an infinite reservoir. Each model predicts the variations in the response and recovery times of such an optical sensor, as a function of the final external analyte concentration, the film thickness (I) and the analyte diffusion coefficient (D). From an observed signal versus time profile for a naked optical film sensor it is shown how values for K and D/I2 can be extracted using the numerical model. Both models provide a qualitative description of the often cited asymmetric nature of the response and recovery for hyperbolic-type response naked optical film sensors. It is envisaged that the models will help in the interpretation of the response and recovery behaviour exhibited by many naked optical film sensors and might be especially apposite when the analyte is a gas.

To assess the efficiency of different agro-environmental strategies used to reduce groundwater pollution by nitrates, transport modelling in soils and groundwater has been carried out on two withdrawal areas in an alluvial plain. In a first time, the agro-environmental model AgriFlux allowed the simulation of water and nitrates fluxes flowing to groundwater. This model was calibrated for each agro-pedological unit of the studied territory. In a second time, the application of the hydrogeological model MODFLOW-MT3D allowed the simulation of nitrate transport in groundwater for the 1980-2004 period. This soil-groundwater coupled modelling has shown that soil nature is the first factor that conditions the vulnerability to nitrates. Thus, nitrate leaching occurs preferentially under sandy soils. Efficiency of different agro-environmental operations for groundwater quality recovery was quantified. The best results are obtained by combination of (1) grassland re-installation on sandy agricultural lots located in near well protection perimeter and (2) fertilization reduction on sandy agricultural lots located in the well alimentation area upstream the near protection perimeter. On other soils, the effect of grassland on groundwater quality improvement is more limited. Nevertheless, the control of nitrate fertilisation remains essential and is justified in both near and far well protection perimeters. Modelling thus allows optimising and priorizing agro-environmental actions in alluvial agricultural zones. [Comte J.-C., Banton O., Kockmann F., Villard A., Creuzot G. We detail the calculations of North Sea Large Fish Indicator values for 2009-2011, demonstrating an apparent stall in recovery. Therefore, recovery to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive's good environmental status of 0.3 by the 2020 deadline now looks less certain and may take longer than was expected using data from 2006 to 2008.
