Nebular spectra of supernovae (SNe) offer an unimpeded view of the inner region of the ejecta, where most nucleosynthesis takes place. Optical spectra cover most, but not all, of the emitting elements and therefore offer only a partial view of the products of the explosion. Simultaneous optical-infrared spectra, on the other hand, contain emission lines of all important elements, from C and O through to the intermediate mass elements (IME) Mg, Si, S, Ca and to Fe and Ni. In particular, Si and S are best seen in the IR. The availability of IR data makes it possible to explore in greater detail the results of the explosion. SN 2007gr is the first Type Ic SN for which such data are available. Modelling the spectra with a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) code reveals that the inner ejecta contain similar to 1M(circle dot) of material within a velocity of approximate to 4500 km s(-1). The same mass of Ni-56 derived from the light-curve peak (0.076M(circle dot)) was used to power the spectrum, yielding consistent results. Oxygen is the dominant element, contributing similar to 0.8M(circle dot). The C/O ratio is

We present contemporary optical and infrared spectroscopic observations of the type IIn SN 1998S covering the period between 3 and 127 days after discovery. During the first week the spectra are characterized by prominent broad H, He and C III/N III emission lines with narrow peaks, superimposed on a very blue continuum (T similar to 24 000 K). In the following two weeks the C III/N III emission vanished, together with the broad emission components of the H and He lines. Broad, blueshifted absorption components appeared in the spectra. The temperature of the continuum also dropped to similar to 14000 K. By the end of the first month the spectrum comprised broad, blueshifted absorptions in H, He, Si II, Fe II and Sc II. By day 44, broad emission components in H and He reappeared in the spectra. These persisted to as late as days similar to 100-130, becoming increasingly asymmetric. We agree with Leonard et al. that the broad emission lines indicate interaction between the ejecta and circumstellar material (CSM) emitted by the progenitor. We also agree that the progenitor of SN 1998S appears to have gone through at least two phases of mass-loss, giving rise to two CSM zones. Examination of the spectra indicates that the inner zone extended to less than or equal to 90 au, while the outer CSM extended from 185 an to over 1800 au.

We report on the results of optical follow-up observations of the counterpart of the gamma-ray burst GRB 970508, starting 7 hr after the event. Multicolor U-, B-, V-, R-c-, and I-c-band observations were obtained during the first three consecutive nights. The counterpart was monitored regularly in R-c, until similar to 4 months after the burst. The light curve after the maximum follows a decline that can be fitted with a power law with exponent alpha = -1.141 +/- 0.014. Deviations from a smooth power-law decay are moderate (rms = 0.15 mag). We find no flattening of the light curve at late times. The optical afterglow fluence is a significant fraction, similar to 5%, of the GRB fluence. The optical energy distribution can be well represented by a power law, the slope of which changed at the time of the maximum (the spectrum became redder).

Mechanical fatigue due to environmental loads and spectrum analysis due to launch loads of the primary structure of a low cost, low-earth orbit small satellite intended for earth observation missions are presented. The payload of the satellite under consideration is a precise optical unit to image the earth’s surface having a mass of 45 kg. 3-D Finite Element Model for the satellite structure is generated by applying substructure method. Modal analysis is required to determine natural frequencies of the satellite and define its mode shape. Then, ranking of mode shapes according to specific constraint is performed. Harmonic analysis at resonance frequencies with the highest ranking is done and cumulative fatigue damage analysis is performed. Spectrum analysis is performed for Small Sat structure to verify the satellite structure reliability under all dynamic random vibration loads applied during transportation and launch cases.

We demonstrate the multifolding Origami manufacture of elastically-deformable Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) membranes that reversibly color-tune across the full visible spectrum without compromising their peak reflectance. Multilayer films composed of alternating transparent rubbers are fixed over a 300 mu m wide pinhole and deformed by pressure into a concave shape. Pressure-induced color tuning from the near-IR to the blue arises from both changes in thickness of the constituent layers and from tilting of the curved DBR surfaces. The layer thickness and color distribution upon deformation, the band-gap variation and the repeatability of cyclic color tuning, are mapped through micro-spectroscopy. Such spatially-dependent thinning of the film under elastic deformation produces spatial chirps in the color, and are shown to allow reconstruction of complex 3D strain distributions. The entanglement spectrum describing quantum correlations in many-body systems has been recently recognized as a key tool to characterize different quantum phases, including topological ones. Here we derive its analytically scaling properties in the vicinity of some integrable quantum phase transitions and extend our studies also to nonintegrable quantum phase transitions in one-dimensional spin models numerically. Our analysis shows that, in all studied cases, the scaling of the difference between the two largest nondegenerate Schmidt eigenvalues yields with good accuracy critical points and mass scaling exponents.

To maintain the pace of development set by Moore's law, production processes in semiconductor manufacturing are becoming more and more complex. The development of efficient and interpretable anomaly detection systems is fundamental to keeping production costs low. As the dimension of process monitoring data can become extremely high anomaly detection systems are impacted by the curse of dimensionality, hence dimensionality reduction plays an important role. Classical dimensionality reduction approaches, such as Principal Component Analysis, generally involve transformations that seek to maximize the explained variance. In datasets with several clusters of correlated variables the contributions of isolated variables to explained variance may be insignificant, with the result that they may not be included in the reduced data representation. It is then not possible to detect an anomaly if it is only reflected in such isolated variables. In this paper we present a new dimensionality reduction technique that takes account of such isolated variables and demonstrate how it can be used to build an interpretable and robust anomaly detection system for Optical Emission Spectroscopy data.
