Ionic liquids are shown to be good solvents for elemental sulfur, selenium, phosphorus and tellurium, and can be designed to maximise the solubility of these elements. The presence of the [S-3](center dot-) radical anion in diluted solutions of sulfur in some ionic liquids has been confirmed, and is the origin of their intense blue colour (cf. lapis lazuli).

We simulate the localized surface plasmon resonances of an Au nanoparticle within tunnelling proximity of an Au substrate. The results demonstrate that the calculated resonance energies can be identified with those experimentally detected for light emission from the tip-sample junction of a scanning tunnelling microscope. Relative to the modes of an isolated nanoparticle these modes show significant red-shifting, extending further into the infrared with increasing radius, primarily due to a proximity-induced lowering of the effective bulk plasmon frequency. Spatial mapping of the field enhancement factor shows an oscillatory variation of the field, absent in the case of a dielectric substrate; also the degree of localization of the modes, and thus the resolution achievable electromagnetically, is shown to depend primarily on the nanoparticle radius, which is only weakly dependent on wavelength.

The aim of this study was to visualize integrin expression by cells in interface tissue in relation to their ligands. Tissue samples were obtained from 25 patients undergoing revision of aseptically loose total joint replacements. Serial sections were immunolabeled for the integrins alpha (2)beta (1) alpha (v)beta (3), alpha (4)beta (1) alpha (L)beta (2) (CD11a), alpha (M)beta (2) (CD11b), and alpha (x)beta (2) (CD11c), and the ligands fibronectin, laminin, vitronectin, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, and vascular adhesion molecule-1. Most cells were found to express alpha (2)beta (1) most macrophages and giant cells expressed CD11b, and the majority of CD11a was found on perivascular T lymphocytes. From the small amount of alpha (4)beta (1) and vascular adhesion molecule-1 expression in the interface tissue and the combination of CD11a, CD11b, and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 expression, it would seem that macrophages use beta (2) integrins to transmigrate. The enhanced optical properties of metal films periodically perforated with an array of sub-wavelength size holes have recently been widely studied in the field of surface plasmon optics. The ability to design the optical transmission of such nanostructures, which act as plasmonic crystals, by varying their geometrical parameters gives them great flexibility for numerous applications in photonics, opto-electronics, and sensing. Transforming these passive optical elements into devices that may be actively controlled has presented a new challenge. Here, we report on the realization of an electrically controlled nanostructured optical system based on the unique properties of surface plasmon polaritonic crystals in contact with a liquid crystal (LC) layer. We discuss the effect of LC layer modulation on the surface plasmon dispersion, the related optical transmission and the underlying mechanism. The reported effect may be used to achieve active spectral tuneability and switching in a wide range of applications.
