A mathematical model for calculating the nonisothermal moisture transfer in building materials is presented in the article. The coupled heat and moisture transfer problem was modeled. Vapor content and temperature were chosen as principal driving potentials. The coupled equations were solved by an analytical method, which consists of applying the Laplace transform technique and the Transfer Function Method. A new experimental methodology for determining the temperature gradient coefficient for building materials was also proposed. Both the moisture diffusion coefficient and the temperature gradient coefficient for building material were experimentally evaluated. Using the measured moisture transport coefficients, the temperature and vapor content distribution inside building materials were predicted by the new model. The results were compared with experimental data. A good agreement was obtained.

In lethal and sublethal ammonia toxicity tests, we examined differences in tolerance of three species of freshwater amphipods, one native and two invasive in Ireland. The native Gammarus duebeni celticus was slightly less tolerant to ammonia than the invasive G. pulex (96h LC50 = 1.155 and 1.544 mg l(-1), respectively), while another invader, Crangonyx pseudograeilis, had the lowest tolerance (LC50 = 0.36 mg l(-1)). Parasitism of G. pulex by the acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus truttae greatly reduced the tolerance of the invader to ammonia (LC50 = 0.381 mg l(-1)). Further, precopula pair disruption tests indicated that G. d. celticus was more sensitive to ammonia than G. pulex at sublethal levels. We discuss these results in the context of the ecological replacements of native by invader amphipods. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study aimed to determine the effect of sub-lethal challenge with Photodynamic Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (PACT) on the susceptibility of clinical Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates to both PACT and a range of antibiotics used in the treatment of infection caused by these bacteria. Clinical S. aureus and P. aeruginosa isolates were exposed to sub-lethal PACT with meso-tetra (N-methyl-4-pyridyl) porphine tetra tosylate (TMP) and methylene blue (MB) over a 72 h period. After exposure, susceptibility of surviving organisms to a range of antibiotics was determined and compared with the susceptibility of an untreated control. Surviving bacteria were also exposed to previously lethal photosensitizer-light combinations, to determine if susceptibility to PACT was affected by sub-lethal exposure. Exposure to sub-lethal PACT did not decrease susceptibility to antibiotics with the minimum inhibitory concentrations for 95% and 100% of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus isolates, respectively, within two doubling dilutions of the MIC of the untreated control. Similarly, habituation with sub-lethal PACT did not reduce susceptibility of P. aeruginosa isolates to PACT levels previously determined as lethal. A reduction in susceptibility to PACT following habituation was apparent for two S. aureus isolates with MB and for 1 S. aureus isolate with IMP. However, for two of these three isolates, the log reduction for habituated cells was still greater than 4 log(10). This study reports the formulation/characterisation of novel polymeric platforms designed to behave as low-viscosity systems in the nonaqueous state, however, following uptake of aqueous ?uids, exhibit rheological structuring and mucoadhesion. The rheological/mechanical and mucoadhesive properties of platforms containing poly(acrylic acid) (PAA, 1%, 3%, 5%, w/w) and poloxamines (Tetronic 904, 901, 704, 701, 304), both in the absence and presence of phosphate buffered saline (PBS, pH 7.4) are described. With the exception of Tetronic 904, all formulations exhibited Newtonian ?ow in the nonaqueous state, whereas, all aqueous formulations displayed pseudoplastic ?ow. The consistency and viscoelastic properties were dependent on the concentrations of PAA and PBS and Tetronic grade. PBS signi?cantly increased the consistency, viscoelasticity and mucoadhesion, reaching a maximum at a de?ned concentration of PBS that was dependent on PAA concentration and Tetronic grade. Formulations containing Tetronic 904 exhibited greatest consistency and elasticity both prior to and after dilution with PBS. Increasing PAA concentration enhanced the mucoadhesive properties. Prolonged drug release of metronidazole was observed from formulations containing 10% (w/w) PBS, 3% and, particularly, 5% (w/w) PAA. It is suggested that the physicochemical properties of formulations containing 3% or 5% (w/w) PAA and Tetronic 904, would render them suitable platforms for administration to body cavities.
