Application of a parallel-projection inversion technique to z-scan spectra of multiply charged xenon and krypton ions, obtained by non-resonant field ionization of neutral targets, has for the first time permitted the direct observation of intensity-dependent ionization probabilities. These ionization efficiency curves have highlighted the presence of structure in the tunnelling regime, previously unobserved under full-volume techniques.

A fast beam of H-2(+) ions, produced from a low energy ion accelerator, has been used for the first time in intense laser field experiments. The technique has enabled neutral dissociation products to be analysed and detected for the first time in such studies. Energy spectra of neutral and ionized fragments, product yields as a function of focused laser intensity and angular distributions of neutral dissociation products have been measured. Significant differences are observed between the present results and those obtained from experiments involving neutral H-2 molecules. These differences are indicative of the precursor H-2 molecule playing an important and hitherto neglected formative role in the laser-induced fragmentation processes.

Sputtered silicon is investigated as a bonding layer for transfer of pre-processed silicon layers to various insulating substrates. Although the material appears suitable for low temperature processing, previous work has shown that gas trapped in the pores of the sputtered material is released at temperatures above 350 degrees C and further increases of temperature lead to destruction of any bonded interface. Pre-annealing at 1000 degrees C before bonding drives out gas and/or seals the surface, but for device applications where processing temperatures must be kept below about 300 degrees C, this technique cannot be used. In the current work, we have investigated the effect of excimer laser-annealing to heat the sputtered silicon surface to high temperature whilst minimising heating of the underlying substrate. Temperature profile simulations are presented and the results of RBS, TEM and AFM used to characterise the annealed layers. The results verify that gases are present in the sub-surface layers and suggest that while sealing of the surface is important for suppression of the out-diffusion of gases, immediate surface gas removal may also play a role. The laser-annealing technique appears to be an effective method of treating sputtered silicon, yielding a low roughness surface suitable for wafer bonding, thermal splitting and layer transfer.

The use of laser-accelerated protons as a particle probe for the detection of electric fields in plasmas has led in recent years to a wealth of novel information regarding the ultrafast plasma dynamics following high intensity laser-matter interactions. The high spatial quality and short duration of these beams have been essential to this purpose. We will discuss some of the most recent results obtained with this diagnostic at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) and at LULI - Ecole Polytechnique (France), also applied to conditions of interest to conventional Inertial Confinement Fusion. In particular, the technique has been used to measure electric fields responsible for proton acceleration from solid targets irradiated with ps pulses, magnetic fields formed by ns pulse irradiation of solid targets, and electric fields associated with the ponderomotive channelling of ps laser pulses in under-dense plasmas.

Large magnetic fields generated during laser-matter interaction at irradiances of ~ 5×1014 W?cm-2 have been measured using a deflectometry technique employing MeV laser-accelerated protons. Azimuthal magnetic fields were identified unambiguously via a characteristic proton deflection pattern and found to have an amplitude of ~ 45 T in the outer coronal region. Comparison with magnetohydrodynamic simulations confirms that in this regime the mathTe×mathne source is the main field generation mechanism, while additional terms are negligible.

The proton radiography technique has been used to investigate the incidence of a 3 x10(19) W/cm(2) infrared pulse with a 125 mu m-diameter gold wire. The laser interaction is observed to drive the growth of a radial electric field similar to 10(10) V/m on the surface of the wire which rises and decays over a temporal window of 20 ps. Such studies of the ultrafast charging of a solid irradiated at high-intensity may be of relevance to schemes for laser-driven ion acceleration and the fast-ignitor concept for inertial confinement fusion.

The direct observation and full characterization of a phase space electron hole (EH) generated during laser-matter interaction is presented. This structure, propagating in a tenuous, nonmagnetized plasma, has been detected via proton radiography during the irradiation with a ns laser pulse (I?2 ˜ 1014 W/cm2) of a gold hohlraum. This technique has allowed the simultaneous detection of propagation velocity, potential, and electron density spatial profile across the EH with fine spatial and temporal resolution allowing a detailed comparison with theoretical and numerical models.

A method for obtaining quantitative information about electric field and charge distributions from proton imaging measurements of laser-induced plasmas is presented. A parameterised charge distribution is used as target plasma. The deflection of a proton beam by the electric field of such a plasma is simulated numerically as well as the resulting proton density, which will be obtained on a screen behind the plasma according to the proton imaging technique. The parameters of the specific charge distributions are delivered by a combination of linear regression and nonlinear fitting of the calculated proton density distribution to the measured optical density of a radiochromic film screen changed by proton exposure. It is shown that superpositions of spherical Gaussian charge distributions as target plasma are sufficient to simulate various structures in proton imaging measurements, which makes this method very flexible.

Laser-driven coherent extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) sources provide pulses lasting a few hundred attoseconds(1,2), enabling real-time access to dynamic changes of the electronic structure of matter(3,4), the fastest processes outside the atomic nucleus. These pulses, however, are typically rather weak. Exploiting the ultrahigh brilliance of accelerator-based XUV sources(5) and the unique time structure of their laser-based counterparts would open intriguing opportunities in ultrafast X-ray and high-field science, extending powerful nonlinear optical and pump-probe techniques towards X-ray frequencies, and paving the way towards unequalled radiation intensities. Relativistic laser-plasma interactions have been identified as a promising approach to achieve this goal(6-13). Recent experiments confirmed that relativistically driven overdense plasmas are able to convert infrared laser light into harmonic XUV radiation with unparalleled efficiency, and demonstrated the scalability of the generation technique towards hard X-rays(14-19). Here we show that the phases of the XUV harmonics emanating from the interaction processes are synchronized, and therefore enable attosecond temporal bunching. Along with the previous findings concerning energy conversion and recent advances in high-power laser technology, our experiment demonstrates the feasibility of confining unprecedented amounts of light energy to within less than one femtosecond.

The onset of filamentation, following the interaction of a relatively long (tau(L) similar or equal to 1 ns) and intense (I-L similar or equal to 5 x 10(14) W/cm(2)) laser pulse with a neopentane filled gas bag target, has been experimentally studied via the proton radiography technique, in conditions of direct relevance to the indirect drive inertial confinement fusion scheme. The density gradients associated with filamentation onset have been spatially resolved yielding direct and unambiguous evidence of filament formation and quantitative information about the filamentation mechanism in agreement with previous theoretical modelings. Experimental data confirm that, once spatially smoothed laser beams are used, filamentation is not a relevant phenomenon during the heating laser beams propagation through typical hohlraum gas fills.

Strategies to produce an ultracold sample of carbon atoms are explored and assessed with the help of quantum chemistry. After a brief discussion of the experimental difficulties using conventional methods, two strategies are investigated. The first attempts to exploit charge exchange reactions between ultracold metal atoms and sympathetically cooled C+ ions. Ab initio calculations including electron correlation have been conducted on the molecular ions [LiC]+ and [BeC]+ to determine whether alkali or alkaline earth metals are a suitable buffer gas for the formation of C atoms but strong spontaneous radiative charge exchange ensure they are not ideal. The second technique involves the stimulated production of ultracold C atoms from a gas of laser cooled carbides. Calculations on LiC suggest that the alkali carbides are not suitable but the CH radical is a possible laser cooling candidate thanks to very favourable Frank-Condon factors. A scheme based on a four pulse STIRAP excitation pathway to a Feshbach resonance is outlined for the production of atomic fragments with near zero centre of mass velocity.

Optical techniques toward the realization of sensitive and selective biosensing platforms have received considerable attention in recent times. Techniques based on interferometry, surface plasmon resonance, and waveguides have all proved popular, while spectroscopy in particular offers much potential. Raman spectroscopy is an information-rich technique in which the vibrational frequencies reveal much about the structure of a compound, but it is a weak process and offers poor sensitivity. In response to this problem, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has received much attention, due to significant increases in sensitivity instigated by bringing the sample into contact with an enhancing substrate. Here we discuss a facile and rapid technique for the detection of pterins using SERS-active colloidal silver suspensions. Pterins are a family of biological compounds that are employed in nature in color pigmentation and as facilitators in metabolic pathways. In this work, small volumes of xanthopterin, isoxanthopterin, and 7,8-dihydrobiopterin have been examined while adsorbed to silver colloids. Limits of detection have been examined for both xanthopterin and isoxanthopterin using a 10-s exposure to a 12 mW 532 nm laser, which, while showing a trade-off between scan time and signal intensity, still provides the opportunity for the investigation of simultaneous detection of both pterins in solution. The use of strong-field (i.e. intensities in excess of 10(13) Wcm(-2)) few-cycle ultrafast (durations of 10 femtoseconds or less) laser pulses to create, manipulate and image vibrational wavepackets is investigated. Quasi-classical modelling of the initial superposition through tunnel ionization, wavepacket modification by nonadiabatically altering the nuclear environment via the transition dipole and the Stark effect, and measuring the control outcome by fragmenting the molecule is detailed. The influence of the laser intensity on strong-field ultrafast wavepacket control is discussed in detail: by modifying the distribution of laser intensities imaged, we show that focal conditions can be created that give preference to this three-pulse technique above processes induced by the pulses alone. An experimental demonstration is presented, and the nuclear dynamics inferred by the quasi-classical model discussed. Finally, we present the results of a systematic investigation of a dual-control pulse scheme, indicating that single vibrational states should be observable with high fidelity, and the populated state defined by varying the arrival time of the two control pulses. The relevance of such strong-field coherent control methods to the manipulation of electron localization and attosecond science is discussed.

Thomson scattering is one of the most powerful diagnostic tools for plasma characterization, and it has been applied to a variety of plasmas. It is a nonintrusive technique, and the interpretation of the signal is relatively simple. However, this method has not been widely applied to low-temperature laser-ablated plasmas. Raman satellites have been observed in the scattering spectrum from a Mg laser-ablated plasma, giving this diagnostic the potential to be also used in density quantification of metastable states in plasmas.
