The measured angular differential cross section (DCS) for the elastic scattering of electrons from Ar+(3s2 3p5 2P) at the collision energy of 16 eV is presented. By solving the Hartree-Fock equations, we calculate the corresponding theoretical DCS including the coupling between the orbital angular momenta and spin of the incident electron and those of the target ion and also relaxation effects. Since the collision energy is above one inelastic threshold for the transition 3s2 3p5 2P–3s 3p6 2S, we consider the effects on the DCS of inelastic absorption processes and elastic resonances. The measurements deviate significantly from the Rutherford cross section over the full angular range observed, especially in the region of a deep minimum centered at approximately 75°. Our theory and an uncoupled, unrelaxed method using a local, spherically symmetric potential by Manson [Phys. Rev. 182, 97 (1969)] both reproduce the overall shape of the measured DCS, although the coupled Hartree-Fock approach describes the depth of the minimum more accurately. The minimum is shallower in the present theory owing to our lower average value for the d-wave non-Coulomb phase shift s2, which is due to the high sensitivity of s2 to the different scattering potentials used in the two models. The present measurements and calculations therefore show the importance of including coupling and relaxation effects when accurately modeling electron-ion collisions. The phase shifts obtained by fitting to the measurements are compared with the values of Manson and the present method.

Photodynamic therapy of deep or nodular skin tumours is currently limited by the poor tissue penetration of the porphyrin precursor 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and preformed photosensitisers. In this study, we investigated the potential of jet injection to deliver both ALA and a preformed photosensitiser (meso-tetra (N-methyl-4-pyridyl) porphine tetra tosylate, TMP) into a defined volume of skin. Initial studies using a model hydrogel showed that as standoff distance is increased, injection depth decreases. As the ejected volume is increased, injection depth increases. It was also shown, for the first time, that, as injection solution viscosity was increased, for a given injection setting and standoff distance, both total depth of jet penetration, L-t, and depth at which the maximum width of the penetration pattern occurred, L-m, decreased progressively. For a standoff distance of zero, the maximum width of the penetration pattern, L-w, increased progressively with increasing viscosity at each of the injection settings. Conversely, when the standoff distance was 2.5 mm, L-w decreased progressively with increasing viscosity. Studies with neonate porcine skin revealed that an injection protocol comprising an 8.98 mPas solution, an arbitrary injection setting of 8 and a standoff distance of zero was capable of delivering photosensitisers to a volume of tissue (L-t of 2.91 mm, L-m of 2.14 mm, L-w of 5. 10 mm) comparable to that occupied by a typical nodular basal cell carcinoma. Both ALA and TMP were successfully delivered using jet injection, with peak tissue concentrations (67.3 mg cm(-3) and 5.6 mg cm(-3), respectively) achieved at a depth of around 1.0 mm and substantial reductions in drug concentration seen at depths below 3.0 mm. Consequently, jet injection may be suitable for selective targeting of ALA or preformed photosensitisers to skin tumours. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This article describes the results of a comprehensive investigation to determine the link between process parameters and observed wall thickness output for the plug-assisted thermoforming process. The overall objective of the work was to systematically investigate the process parameters that may be adjusted during production to control the wall thickness distribution of parts manufactured by plug-assisted thermoforming. The parameters investigated were the sheet temperature, plug temperature, plug speed, plug displacement, plug shape, and air pressure. As well as quantifying the effects of each parameter on the wall thickness distribution, a further aim of the work was to improve the understanding of the physical mechanisms of deformation of the sheet during the different stages of the process. The process parameters shown to have the greatest effect on experimentally determined wall thickness distribution were the plug displacement, sheet temperature, plug temperature, and plug shape. It is proposed that during the plug-assisted thermoforming of polystyrene the temperature dependent friction between the plug and sheet surface was the most important factor in determining product wall thickness distribution, whereas heat transfer was shown to play a less important role. Numerous epidemiological studies have examined the association between physical activity and pancreatic cancer; however, findings from individual cohorts have largely not corroborated a protective effect. Among other plausible mechanisms, physical activity may reduce abdominal fat depots inducing metabolic improvements in glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, thereby potentially attenuating pancreatic cancer risk. We performed a systematic review to examine associations between physical activity and pancreatic cancer. Six electronic databases were searched from their inception through July 2009, including MEDLINE and EMBASE, seeking observational studies examining any physical activity measure with pancreatic cancer incidence/mortality as an outcome. A random effects model was used to pool individual effect estimates evaluating highest vs. lowest categories of activity. Twenty-eight studies were included. Pooled estimates indicated a reduction in pancreatic cancer risk with higher levels of total (five prospective studies, RR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.52-0.99) and occupational activity (four prospective studies, RR: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.59-0.96). Nonsignificant inverse associations were seen between risks and recreational and transport physical activity. When examining exercise intensity, moderate activity appeared more protective (RR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.52-1.20) than vigorous activity (RR: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.85-1.11), but results were not statistically significant and the former activity variable incorporated marked heterogeneity. Despite indications of an inverse relationship with higher levels of work and total activity, there was little evidence of such associations with recreational and other activity exposures.

The effect of volume shape factor on crystal size distribution (CSD) is usually ignored to simplify the analysis of population balance equation. In the present work, the CSD of fragments generated from a mechanically stirred crystallizer as the result of attrition mechanism has been reported when the volume shape factor conforms to normal distribution. The physical model of GAHN and MERSMANN which relates the attrition resistance of a crystalline substances to its mechanical properties has been employed. The simulation of fragment size distribution was performed by Monte Carlo (MC) technique. The results are compared with those reported by GAHN and MERSMANN.

A time-domain formulation of a lumped model ap-
proximation of a clarinet reed excitation mechanism is presented.
The lumped model is based on an analytical representation of
the ow within the reed channel, incorporating a contraction
coefcient (vena contracta factor) that is dened as the ratio of
the effective ow over the Bernoulli ow. This coefcient has
been considered to be constant in previous studies focusing on
sound synthesis. In this paper it will be treated as a function
of the reed opening, varying between 0 and 1 as predicted by
boundary layer ow theory. Focussing on a specic mouthpiece
geometry, the effect of modelling a variable air jet height on the
synthesised sound is analysed.

Jellyfish (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa) are increasingly thought to play a number of important ecosystem roles, but often fundamental knowledge of their distribution, seasonality and inter-annual variability is lacking. Bloom forming species, due to their high densities, can have particularly intense trophic and socio-economic impacts. In northern Europe it is known that one particularly large (up to 30 kg wet weight) bloom forming jellyfish is Rhizostoma spp. Given the potential importance, we set out to review all known records from peer-reviewed and broader public literature of the jellyfish R. octopus (Linnaeus) and R. pulmo (Macri) (Scyphozoa: Rhizostomae) across western Europe. These data revealed distinct hotspots where regular Rhizostoma spp. aggregations appeared to form, with other sites characterized by occasional abundances and a widespread distribution of infrequent observations. Surveys of known R. octopus hotspots around the Irish Sea also revealed marked inter-annual variation with particularly high abundances forming during 2003. The location of such consistent aggregations and inter-annual variances are discussed in relation to physical, climatic and dietary variations.
