We describe a simple strategy, which is based on the idea of space confinement, for the synthesis of carbon coating on LiFePO4 nanoparticles/graphene nanosheets composites in a water-in-oil emulsion system. The prepared composite displayed high performance as a cathode material for lithium-ion battery, such as high reversible lithium storage capacity (158 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles), high coulombic efficiency (over 97%), excellent cycling stability and high rate capability (as high as 83 mA h g -1 at 60 C). Very significantly, the preparation method employed can be easily adapted and be extended as a general approach to sophisticated compositions and structures for the preparation of highly dispersed nanosized structure on graphene

A facile method to synthesize well-dispersed TiO2 quantum dots on graphene nanosheets (TiO2-QDs/GNs) in a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion system is reported. The TiO2/graphene composites display high performance as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), such as having high reversible lithium storage capacity, high Coulombic efficiency, excellent cycling stability, and high rate capability. The excellent electrochemical performance and special structure of the composites thus offer a way to prepare novel graphene-based electrode materials for high-energy-density and high-power LIBs.

We developed a facile two-step hydrothermal procedure to prepare hybrid materials of LiV3O8 nanorods on graphene sheets. The special structure endows them with the high-rate transportation of electrolyte ions and electrons throughout the electrode matrix, resulting in remarkable electrochemical performance when they were used as cathodes in rechargeable lithium batteries. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

A tactful ionic-liquid (IL)-assisted approach to in situ synthesis of iron fluoride/graphene nanosheet (GNS) hybrid nanostructures is developed. To ensure uniform dispersion and tight anchoring of the iron fluoride on graphene, we employ an IL which serves not only as a green fluoride source for the crystallization of iron fluoride nanoparticles but also as a dispersant of GNSs. Owing to the electron transfer highways created between the nanoparticles and the GNSs, the iron fluoride/GNS hybrid cathodes exhibit a remarkable improvement in both capacity and rate performance (230 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and 74 mAh g-1 at 40 C). The stable adhesion of iron fluoride nanoparticles on GNSs also introduces a significant improvement in long-term cyclic performance (115 mAh g-1 after 250 cycles even at 10 C). The superior electrochemical performance of these iron fluoride/GNS hybrids as lithium ion battery cathodes is ascribed to the robust structure of the hybrid and the synergies between iron fluoride nanoparticles and graphene. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Composites of Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) and Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNPs) were processed using a twin screw extruder under different extrusion conditions. The effects of screw speed, feeder speed and GNP content on the electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of composites were investigated. The inclusion of GNPs in the matrix improved the thermal stability and conductivity by 2.7% and 43%, respectively. The electrical conductivity improved from 10−11 to 10−5 S/m at 150 rpm due to the high thermal stability of the GNPs and the formation of phonon and charge carrier networks in the polymer matrix. Higher extruder speeds result in a better distribution of the GNPs in the matrix and a significant increase in thermal stability and thermal conductivity. However, this effect is not significant for the electrical conductivity and tensile strength. The addition of GNPs increased the viscosity of the polymer, which will lead to higher processing power requirements. Increasing the extruder speed led to a reduction in viscosity, which is due to thermal degradation and/or chain scission. Thus, while high speeds result in better dispersions, the speed needs to be optimized to prevent detrimental impacts on the properties.

The focus of this work is to develop the knowledge of prediction of the physical and chemical properties of processed linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/graphene nanoplatelets composites. Composites made from LLDPE reinforced with 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 wt% grade C graphene nanoplatelets (C-GNP) were processed in a twin screw extruder with three different screw speeds and feeder speeds (50, 100, and 150 rpm). These applied conditions are used to optimize the following properties: thermal conductivity, crystallization temperature, degradation temperature, and tensile strength while prediction of these properties was done through artificial neural network (ANN). The three first properties increased with increase in both screw speed and C-GNP content. The tensile strength reached a maximum value at 4 wt% C-GNP and a speed of 150 rpm as this represented the optimum condition for the stress transfer through the amorphous chains of the matrix to the C-GNP. ANN can be confidently used as a tool to predict the above material properties before investing in development programs and actual manufacturing, thus significantly saving money, time, and effort.

Herein, we report a facile and effective adsorption strategy to improve the performance of Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) batteries. MnO2 nanosheets grown on the surface of highly conductive graphene resulted in a coupled composite bilayer electrode when coated onto a sulfur cathode. In this way, a high initial specific capacity of 1395 mA h g-1 at a rate of 0.5C, a coulombic efficiency approaching 100% and steady cyclic efficiency with a fade rate of 0.3% per cycle from 10 to 100 cycles has been achieved. This hybrid electrode not only shows enhanced electrochemical performance but can also be easily controlled and scaled thereby aiding future commercialization of high-performance Li-S batteries.

Carbon films were energetically deposited onto copper and nickel foil using a filtered cathodic vacuum arc deposition system. Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and UV–visible spectroscopy showed that graphene films of uniform thickness with up to 10 layers can be deposited onto copper foil at moderate temperatures of 750 C. The resulting films, which can be prepared at high deposition rates, were comparable to graphene films grown at 1050 C using chemical vapour deposition (CVD). This difference in growth temperature is attributed to dynamic annealing which occurs as the film grows from the energetic carbon flux. In the case of nickel substrates, it was found that graphene films can also be prepared at moderate substrate temperatures. However much higher carbon doses were required, indicating that the growth mode differs between substrates as observed in CVD grown graphene. The films deposited onto nickel were also highly non uniform in thickness, indicating that the grain structure of the nickel substrate influenced the growth of graphene layers.

Graphene with heteroatom doping has found increasing applications in a broad range of catalytic reactions. However, the doping effects accounting for the enhanced catalytic activity still remain elusive. In this work, taking the triiodide electroreduction reaction as an example, we study systematically the intrinsic activity of graphene and explore the origin of doping-induced activity variation using first-principles calculations, in which two typical N and S dopants are tested. The most common graphene structures, basal plane, armchair edge, and zigzag edge, are considered, and it is found that the former two structures show a weak adsorption ability for the iodine atom (the key intermediate in the triiodide electroreduction reaction), corresponding to a low catalytic activity. Doping either N or S can strengthen the adsorption and thus increase the activity, and the codoping of N and S (NS-G) exhibits a synergistic effect. A detailed investigation into the whole process of the triiodide electroreduction reaction at the CH3CN/NS-G interface is also carried out to verify these activity trends. It is found that the zigzag edges which contain spin electrons show a relatively stronger adsorption strength compared with the basal plane and armchair edge, and initial doping would result in the spin disappearance that evidently weakens the adsorption; with the disappearance of spin, however, further doping can increase the adsorption again, suggesting that the spin electrons may play a preliminary role in affecting the intrinsic activity of graphene. We also analyzed extensively the origin of doping-induced adsorption enhancement of graphene in the absence of spin; it can be rationalized from the electronic and geometric factors. Specifically, N doping can result in a more delocalized “electron-donating area” to enhance I adsorption, while S doping provides a localized structural distortion, which activates the nearest sp2-C into coordinatively unsaturated sp3-C. These results explain well the improved activity of the doping and the synergistic effect of the codoping. The understandings are generalized to provide insight into the enhanced activity of the oxygen reduction reaction on heteroatom doped graphene. This work may be of importance toward the design of high-activity graphene based material.

Organic-graphene system has emerged as a new platform for various applications such as flexible organic photovoltaics and organic light emitting diodes. Due to its important implication in charge transport, the study and reliable control of molecular packing structures at the graphene-molecule interface are of great importance for successful incorporation of graphene in related organic devices. Here, an ideal membrane of suspended graphene as a molecular assembly template is utilized to investigate thin-film epitaxial behaviors. Using transmission electron microscopy, two distinct molecular packing structures of pentacene on graphene are found. One observed packing structure is similar to the well-known bulk-phase, which adapts a face-on molecular orientation on graphene substrate. On the other hand, a rare polymorph of pentacene crystal, which shows significant strain along the c-axis, is identified. In particular, the strained film exhibits a specific molecular orientation and a strong azimuthal correlation with underlying graphene. Through ab initio electronic structure calculations, including van der Waals interactions, the unusual polymorph is attributed to the strong graphene-pentacene interaction. The observed strained organic film growth on graphene demonstrates the possibility to tune molecular packing via graphene-molecule interactions.

Fabricating stable functional devices at the atomic scale is an ultimate goal of nanotechnology. In biological processes, such high-precision operations are accomplished by enzymes. A counterpart molecular catalyst that binds to a solid-state substrate would be highly desirable. Here, we report the direct observation of single Si adatoms catalyzing the dissociation of carbon atoms from graphene in an aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). The single Si atom provides a catalytic wedge for energetic electrons to chisel off the graphene lattice, atom by atom, while the Si atom itself is not consumed. The products of the chiseling process are atomic-scale features including graphene pores and clean edges. Our experimental observations and first-principles calculations demonstrated the dynamics, stability, and selectivity of such a single-atom chisel, which opens up the possibility of fabricating certain stable molecular devices by precise modification of materials at the atomic scale.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have generated great interest in the last few years as a new toolbox for electronics. This family of materials includes, among others, metallic graphene, semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (such as MoS2) and insulating Boron Nitride. These materials and their heterostructures offer excellent mechanical flexibility, optical transparency and favorable transport properties for realizing electronic, sensing and optical systems on arbitrary surfaces. In this work, we develop several etch stop layer technologies that allow the fabrication of complex 2D devices and present for the first time the large scale integration of graphene with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) , both grown using the fully scalable CVD technique. Transistor devices and logic circuits with MoS2 channel and graphene as contacts and interconnects are constructed and show high performances. In addition, the graphene/MoS2 heterojunction contact has been systematically compared with MoS2-metal junctions experimentally and studied using density functional theory. The tunability of the graphene work function significantly improves the ohmic contact to MoS2. These high-performance large-scale devices and circuits based on 2D heterostructure pave the way for practical flexible transparent electronics in the future. We present a comprehensive study based on first-principles calculations about the interplay of four important ingredients on the electronic structure of graphene: defects + magnetism + ripples + strain. So far they have not been taken into account simultaneously in a set of ab initio calculations. Furthermore, we focus on the strain dependence of the properties of carbon monovacancies, with special attention to magnetic spin moments. We demonstrated that such defects show a very rich structural and spin phase-diagram with many spin solutions as function of strain. At zero strain the vacancy shows a spin moment of 1.5 Bohrs that increases up to 2 Bohrs with stretching. Changes are more dramatic under compression: the vacancy becomes non-magnetic under a compression larger than 2%. This transition is linked to the structural modifications associated with the formation of ripples in the graphene layer. Our results suggest that such interplay could have important implications for the design of future spintronics devices based on graphene derivatives, as for example a spin-strain switch based on vacancies.

Graphene, due to its exceptional properties, is a promising material for nanotechnology applications. In this context, the ability to tune the properties of graphene-based materials and devices with the incorporation of defects and impurities can be of extraordinary importance. Here we investigate the effect of uniaxial tensile strain on the electronic and magnetic properties of graphene doped with substitutional Ni impurities (Ni_sub). We have found that, although Ni_sub defects are non-magnetic in the relaxed layer, uniaxial strain induces a spin moment in the system. The spin moment increases with the applied strain up to values of 0.3-0.4 \mu_B per Ni_sub, until a critical strain of ~6.5% is reached. At this point, a sharp transition to a high-spin state (~1.9 \mu_B) is observed. This magnetoelastic effect could be utilized to design strain-tunable spin devices based on Ni-doped graphene.
