Cyclin-dependent kinase 11(p58) interacts with HBO1 and enhances its histone acetyltransferase activity.

CDK11(p58), a 58kDa protein of the PITSLRE kinase family, plays an important role in cell cycle progression, and is closely related to cell apoptosis. To gain further insight into the function of CDK11(p58), we screened a human fetal liver cDNA library for its interacting proteins using the yeast two-hybrid system. Here we report that histone acetyltransferase (HAT) HBO1, a MYST family protein, interacts with CDK11(p58) in vitro and in vivo. CDK11(p58) and HBO1 colocalize in the cell nucleus. Recombinant CDK11(p58) enhances the HAT activity of HBO1 significantly in vitro. Meanwhile, overexpression of CDK11(p58) in mammalian cells leads to the enhanced HAT activity of HBO1 towards free histones. Thus, we conclude that CDK11(p58) is a new interacting protein and a novel regulator of HBO1. Both of the proteins may be involved in the regulation of eukaryotic transcription.

Systematic review of the agreement of tonometers with Goldmann applanation tonometry

OBJECTIVE: To assess the agreement of tonometers available for clinical practice with the Goldmann applanation tonometer (GAT), the most commonly accepted reference device.

DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis of directly comparative studies assessing the agreement of 1 or more tonometers with the reference tonometer (GAT).

PARTICIPANTS: A total of 11 582 participants (15 525 eyes) were included.

METHODS: Summary 95% limits of agreement (LoA) were produced for each comparison.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Agreement, recordability, and reliability.

RESULTS: A total of 102 studies, including 130 paired comparisons, were included, representing 8 tonometers: dynamic contour tonometer, noncontact tonometer (NCT), ocular response analyzer, Ocuton S, handheld applanation tonometer (HAT), rebound tonometer, transpalpebral tonometer, and Tono-Pen. The agreement (95% limits) seemed to vary across tonometers: 0.2 mmHg (-3.8 to 4.3 mmHg) for the NCT to 2.7 mmHg (-4.1 to 9.6 mmHg) for the Ocuton S. The estimated proportion within 2 mmHg of the GAT ranged from 33% (Ocuton S) to 66% and 59% (NCT and HAT, respectively). Substantial inter- and intraobserver variability were observed for all tonometers.

CONCLUSIONS: The NCT and HAT seem to achieve a measurement closest to the GAT. However, there was substantial variability in measurements both within and between studies.

Chemisorption and decomposition of pyrrole on Pd{111}

XPS, TPD and HREEL results indicate that molecular pyrrole is a fragile adsorbate on clean Pd{111}. At 200 K and for low coverages, the molecule remains intact and adopts an almost flat-lying geometry. With increasing coverage, pyrrole molecules tilt away from the surface and undergo N-H bond cleavage to form strongly tilted pyrrolyl (C4H4N) species. In addition, a weakly bound, strongly tilted form of molecular pyrrole is observed at coverages approaching saturation. Heating pyrrole monolayers results in desorption of similar to 15% of the overlayer as molecular pyrrole and N-a+ C4H4Na recombination with formation of hat-lying pyrrole molecules. This strongly bound species undergoes decomposition to adsorbed CN, CHx and H, leading ultimately to desorption of HCN and H-2. The implications of these results for the production of pyrrole by a heterogeneously catalysed route are discussed.

Lucky Imaging of transiting planet host stars with LuckyCam

We obtained high-resolution, high-contrast optical imaging in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey i′ band with the LuckyCam camera mounted on the 2.56 m Nordic Optical Telescope, to search for faint stellar companions to 16 stars harbouring transiting exoplanets. The Lucky imaging technique uses very short exposures to obtain near diffraction-limited images yielding sub-arcsecond sensitivity, allowing us to search for faint stellar companions within the seeing disc of the primary planet host. Here, we report the detection of two candidate stellar companions to the planet host TrES-1 at separations <6.5 arcsec and we confirm stellar companions to CoRoT-2, CoRoT-3, TrES-2, TrES-4 and HAT-P-7 already known in the literature. We do not confirm the candidate companions to HAT-P-8 found via Lucky imaging by Bergfors et al., however, most probably because HAT-P-8 was observed in poor seeing conditions. Our detection sensitivity limits allow us to place constraints on the spectral types and masses of the putative bound companions to the planet host stars in our sample. If bound, the stellar companions identified in this work would provide stringent observational constraints to models of planet formation and evolution. In addition, these companions could affect the derived physical properties of the exoplanets in these systems.

Dies hat sowohl negative Auswirkungen auf die Finanzierbarkeit sozialer Sicherungssysteme als auch langfristig auf die Verfügbarkeit qualifizierter Arbeitnehmer am Arbeitsmarkt. Nationale Regierungen verfolgen daher gegenwärtig verschiedene Maßnahmen mit dem Ziel, die Arbeitsmarktbeteiligung älterer Arbeitnehmer zu erhöhen (OECD 2006). What is meant by the term random? Do we understand how to identify which type of randomisation to use in our future research projects? We, as researchers, often explain randomisation to potential research participants as being a 50/50 chance of selection to either an intervention or control group, akin to drawing numbers out of a hat. Is this an accurate explanation? And are all methods of randomisation equal? This paper aims to guide the researcher through the different techniques used to randomise participants with examples of how they can be used in educational research.
