The use of seaweed fertilisers in sports green maintenance has become a common practice across the globe due to its image as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilisers. The aim of this study was to characterise the risk of human exposure to arsenic (As), via dermal absorption, from golfing activities on a private golf course in the UK, where As contaminated seaweed fertiliser (~ 100 mg/kg d.wt.) is applied. This was fulfilled by, 1) determining As concentrations in shallow soils with GIS geo-statistical analysis, 2) measuring As concentrations from an on-site borehole groundwater well, and (3) developing a risk assessment calculation for golfing activities based on field and questionnaire data. Total As concentrations in shallow soils were less than the UK threshold for domestic soils, however, frequent and sustained dermal contact between site-users and surface soil attributed to a maximum carcinogenic risk value of 2.75 10 4, which is in the upper limit of the acceptable risk range. Arsenic concentrations in underlying groundwater exceeded the WHO's permissible drinking water standard, demonstrating the risk of groundwater contamination following the application of seaweed fertiliser to golf course soils. This is the first risk study on dermal As absorption via the application of a seaweed fertiliser.

Twenty years on from the 1994 cease-fires, Northern Ireland is a markedly safer place for children and young people to grow up. However, for a significant number, growing up in post-conflict Northern Ireland has brought with it continued risks and high levels of marginalization. Many young people growing up on the sharp edge of the transition have continued to experience troubling levels of poverty, lower educational attainment, poor standards of childhood health, and sustained exposure to risk-laden environments. Reflecting on interdisciplinary research carried out since the start of the transition to peace, this article emphasizes the impact that embedded structural inequalities continue to have on the social, physical, mental, and emotional well-being of many children and young people. In shining a light on the enduring legacy of the conflict, this article moves to argue that greater attention needs to be given to the ongoing socioeconomic factors that result in limited lifetime opportunities, marginalization, and sustained poverty for many young people growing up in peacetime Northern Ireland.

The plain fatigue and fretting fatigue tests of Ti-1023 titanium alloy were performed using a high-frequency push-pull fatigue testing machine. Both max versus number of cycles to failure curves were obtained for comparative analysis of the fretting effect on fatigue performance of the titanium alloy. Meanwhile, by analyzing the fracture of plain fatigue and fretting fatigue, the fretting scar and the fretting debris observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the mechanism of fretting fatigue failure of Ti-1023 titanium alloy is discussed. The fretting fatigue strength of Ti-1023 titanium alloy is 175 MPa under 10 MPa contact pressure, which is 21% of plain fatigue strength (836 MPa). Under fretting condition, the Ti-1023 titanium alloy fatigue fracture failure occurs in a shorter fatigue life. When it comes to max versus number of cycles to failure curves, data points in the range of 106107 cycles under plain fatigue condition moved to the range of 105106 under fretting fatigue condition. The integrity of the fatigue specimen surface was seriously damaged under the effect of fretting. With the alternating stress loaded on specimen, the stress concentrated on the surface of fretting area, which brought earlier the initiation and propagation of crack.

<b>Objectives</b>: To develop and manufacture both immediate and sustained release vaginal tablets containing the anticancer drug disulfiram, which has the potential to be used as a non-invasive treatment for cervical cancer.<br/><b>Methods</b>: Disulfiram-loaded vaginal tablets were manufactured at pilot scale using the direct compression method. These tablets were tested in accordance with the European Pharmacopeia testing of solid dosage form guidelines. They were also tested using a biorelevant dissolution method as well as a dual-chambered release model designed to better mimic the dynamic nature of the vaginal vault.<br/><b>Key findings</b>: We have developed both immediate and sustained release vaginal tablets, which when manufactured at pilot scale are within the limits set by the European Pharmacopeia for the testing of solid dosage forms. Furthermore, these tablets are capable of releasing disulfiram in vitro using the dual-chambered release model at levels 25000 times and 35000 times greater than its IC50 concentration for the HeLa cervical cancer cell line.<br/><b>Conclusions</b>: The successful pilot manufacture and testing of both the immediate and sustained release disulfiram-loaded vaginal tablets warrant further investigation, using an in-vivo model, to assess their potential for use as a non-invasive treatment option for cervical cancer.

<p>By contrast to the Target Normal Sheath acceleration (TNSA) mechanism [1], Radiation Pressure Acceleration (RPA) is currently attracting a substantial amount of experimental [2,3] and theoretical [4-6] attention worldwide due to its superior scaling in terms of ion energy and laser-ion conversion efficiency. Employing Vulcan Petawatt lasers of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK, both the Hole-boring (HB) and the Light-Sail (LS) regimes of the RPA have been extensively explored. When the target thickness is of the order of hole-boring velocity times the laser pulse duration, highly collimated plasma jets of near solid density are ejected from the foil, lasting up to ns after the laser interaction. By changing the linear polarisation of the laser to circular, improved homogeneity in the jet's spatial density profile is achieved which suggests more uniform and sustained radiation pressure drive on target ions. By decreasing the target areal density or increasing irradiance on the target, the LS regime of the RPA is accessed where relatively high flux (~ 1012 particles/MeV/Sr) of ions are accelerated to ~ 10 MeV/nucleon energies in a narrow energy bandwidth. The ion energy scaling obtained from the parametric scans agrees well with theoretical estimation based on RPA mechanism and the narrow bandwidth feature in the ion spectra is studied by 2D particle-in-simulations.</p>

Background: Proposals to implement fatigue-management strategies in residency education assume that medicine shares the view<br/>of other risk-adverse industries that fatigue is hazardous. This view is an essential underpinning of fatigue-management strategies<br/>that other industries have embedded as part of their workplace occupational health and safety programs. We sought to explore how<br/>residents understand fatigue in the context of their training environment.<br/><br/>Methods: We interviewed 21 residents in 7 surgical and nonsurgical programs at Western University in 2014. All participants met the<br/>inclusion criteria of routinely working 24-hour call shifts while enrolled in their training program. Data collection and analysis occurred iteratively in keeping with constructivist grounded theory methodology and informed theoretical sampling to sufficiency.<br/><br/>Results: Four predominant principles of fatigue captured how the social learning environment shaped residents perceptions of<br/>fatigue. These included the conceptualization of fatigue as (a) inescapable and therefore accepted, (b) manageable through experience, (c) necessary for future practice and (d) surmountable when required.<br/><br/>Interpretation: This study elaborates our understanding of how principles of fatigue are constructed and reinforced by the training<br/>environment. Whereas fatigue is seen as a collective hazard in other industries, our data showed that, in residency training, fatigue<br/>may be seen as a personal challenge. Consequently, fatigue-management strategies that conceptualize fatigue as an occupational<br/>threat may have a limited impact on resident behaviour and patient safety.

The combination of metformin hydrochloride (MTF) and glipizide (GLZ) is second-line medication for diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2). In the present study, elementary osmotic pump(EOP)tablet is designed to deliver the combination of MTF and GLZ in a sustained and synchronized manner. By analyzing different variables of the formulation, sodium hydrogen carbonate is introduced as pH modifier to improve the release of GLZ, while ethyl cellulose acts as release retardant to reduce the burst release phase of MTF. A two factor, three level face-centered central composite design (FCCD) is applied to investigate the impact of different factors on drug release profile. Compared with conventional tablets, the elementary osmotic pump (EOP) tablet demonstrates a controlled release behavior with relative bioavailability of 99.2% for MTF and 99.3% for GLZ. Data also shows EOP tablet is able to release MTF and GLZ in a synchronized and sustained manner both in vitro and in vivo

This paper presents the first multi vector energy analysis for the interconnected energy systems of Great Britain (GB) and Ireland. Both systems share a common high penetration of wind power, but significantly different security of supply outlooks. Ireland is heavily dependent on gas imports from GB, giving significance to the interconnected aspect of the methodology in addition to the gas and power interactions analysed. A fully realistic unit commitment and economic dispatch model coupled to an energy flow model of the gas supply network is developed. Extreme weather events driving increased domestic gas demand and low wind power output were utilised to increase gas supply network stress. Decreased wind profiles had a larger impact on system security than high domestic gas demand. However, the GB energy system was resilient during high demand periods but gas network stress limited the ramping capability of localised generating units. Additionally, gas system entry node congestion in the Irish system was shown to deliver a 40% increase in short run costs for generators. Gas storage was shown to reduce the impact of high demand driven congestion delivering a reduction in total generation costs of 14% in the period studied and reducing electricity imports from GB, significantly contributing to security of supply.

Oliver Cromwell remains a deeply controversial figure in Ireland. In the past decade, his role in the conquest has received sustained attention. However, in recent scholarship on the settlement of Ireland in the 1650s, he has enjoyed a peculiarly low profile. This trend has served to compound the interpretative problems relating to Cromwell and Ireland which stem in part from the traditional denominational divide in Irish historiography. This article offers a reappraisal of Cromwell's role in designing and implementing the far-reaching Cromwellian land settlement. It examines the evidence relating to his dealings with Irish people, both Protestant and Catholic, and his attitude towards the enormous difficulties which they faced post-conquest. While the massacre at Drogheda in 1649 remains a blot on his reputation, in the 1650s Cromwell in fact emerged as an important and effective ally for Irish landowners seeking to defeat the punitive confiscation and transplantation policies approved by the Westminster parliament and favoured by the Dublin government.

The common spiny mouse Acomys cahirinus, of Ethiopian origin, has a widespread distribution across arid, semi-arid and Mediterranean parts of the Arabian sub-region. We compared the daily energy expenditure (DEE), water turnover NTTO) and sustained metabolic scope (SusMS = DEE/resting metabolic rate) of two adjacent populations during the winter. Mice were captured from North- and South- facing slopes (NFS and SFS) of the same valley, comprising mesic and xeric habitats, respectively. Both DEE and SusMS winter values were greater in NFS than SFS mice and were significantly greater than values previously measured in the summer for these two populations in the same environments. However, WTO values were consistent with previously established values and were not significantly different from allometric predictions for desert eutherians. We suggest that physiological plasticity in energy expenditure, which exists both temporally and spatially, combined with stable WTO, perhaps reflecting a xeric ancestry, has enabled A. cahirinus to invade a wide range of habitats. Recent advances in neuroimaging technologies have allowed ever more detailed studies of the human brain. The combination of neuroimaging techniques with genetics may provide a more sensitive measure of the influence of genetic variants on cognitive function than behavioural measures alone. Here we present a review of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of genetic links to executive functions, focusing on sustained attention, working memory and response inhibition. In addition to studies in the normal population, we also address findings from three clinical populations: schizophrenia, ADHD and autism spectrum disorders. While the findings in the populations studied do not always converge, they all point to the usefulness of neuroimaging techniques such as fMRI as potential endophenotypes for parsing the genetic aetiology of executive function. Response time (RT) variability is a common finding in ADHD research. RT variability may reflect frontal cortex function and may be related to deficits in sustained attention. The existence of a sustained attention deficit in ADHD has been debated, largely because of inconsistent evidence of time-on-task effects. A fixed-sequence Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART) was given to 29 control, 39 unimpaired and 24 impaired-ADHD children (impairment defined by the number of commission errors). The response time data were analysed using the Fast Fourier Transform, to define the fast-frequency and slow-frequency contributions to overall response variability. The impaired-ADHD group progressively slowed in RT over the course of the 5.5 min task, as reflected in this group's greater slow-frequency variability. The fast-frequency trial-to-trial variability was also significantly greater, but did not differentially worsen over the course of the task. The higher error rates of the impaired-ADHD group did not become differentially greater over the length of the task. The progressive slowing in mean RT over the course of the task may relate to a deficit in arousal in the impaired-ADHD group. The consistently poor performance in fast-frequency variability and error rates may be due to difficulties in sustained attention that fluctuate on a trial-to-trial basis. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Silicone elastomer systems have been shown to offer potential for the fabrication of medical devices and sustained release drug delivery devices comprising low molecular weight drugs and protein therapeutics. For drug delivery systems in particular, there is often no clear rationale for selection of the silicone elastomer grade, particularly in respect of optimizing the manufacturing conditions to ensure thermal stability of the active agent and short cycle times. In this study, the cure characteristics of a range of addition-cure and condensation-cure, low-consistency, implant-grade silicone elastomers, either as supplied or loaded with the model protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) and the model hydrophilic excipient glycine, were investigated using oscillatory rheology with a view to better understanding the isothermal cure characteristics. The results demonstrate the influence of elastomer type, cure temperature, protein loading, and glycine loading on isothermal cure properties. By measuring the cure time required to achieve tan delta values representative of early and late-stage cure conditions, a ratio t(1)/t(2) was defined that allowed the cure characteristics of the various systems to be compared. Sustained in vitro release of BSA from glycine-loaded silicone elastomer covered rod devices was also demonstrated over 14 days. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 116: 2320-2327, 2010

The linkage between the impact of assessment and compliance with childrens rights is a connection, which although seemingly obvious, is nonetheless rarely made, particularly by governments, which, as signatories to the relevant human rights treaties, have the primary responsibility for ensuring that educational practice is compatible with international childrens rights standards. While some jurisdictions are explicit about an adherence to childrens rights frameworks in general policy documentation, such a commitment rarely features when the focus is on assessment and testing. Thus, in spite of significant public and academic attention given to the consequences of assessment for children and governments committed to working within childrens rights standards, the two are rarely considered together. This paper examines the implications for the policy, process and practice of assessment in light of international human rights standards. Three key childrens rights principles and standards are used as a critical lens to examine assessment policy and practice: (1) best interests; (2) non-discrimination; and (3) participation. The paper seeks new insights into the complexities of assessment practice from the critical perspective of childrens rights and argues that such standards not only provide a convenient benchmark for developing, implementing and evaluating assessment practices, but also acknowledge the significance of assessment in the delivery of childrens rights to, in and through education more generally.

BACKGROUND: On the basis of preclinical studies of NC-6004, a cisplatin-incorporated micellar formulation, we hypothesised that NC-6004 could show lower toxicity than cisplatin and show greater anti-tumour activity in phase I study. METHODS: A total of 17 patients were recruited in a range of advanced solid tumour types. NC-6004 was administered intravenously (i.v.) every 3 weeks. The dose escalation started at 10?mg?m(-2) and was increased up to 120?mg?m(-2) according to the accelerated titration method and modified Fibonacci method. RESULTS: One dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) occurred in a patient who was given 90?mg?m(-2) of NC-6004, otherwise any significant cisplatin-related toxicity was not observed or generally mild toxicity was observed. Despite the implementation of post-hydration and pre-medication regimen, renal impairment and hypersensitivity reactions still developed at 120?mg?m(-2), which led to the conclusion that the maximum tolerated dose was 120?mg?m(-2), and the recommended dose was 90?mg?m(-2), although DLT was not defined as per protocol. Stable disease was observed in seven patients. The maximum concentration and area under the concentration-time curve of ultrafilterable platinum at 120?mg?m(-2) NC-6004 were 34-fold smaller and 8.5-fold larger, respectively, than those for cisplatin. CONCLUSION: The delayed and sustained release of cisplatin after i.v. administration contributes to the low toxicity of NC-6004.
