A power combining strategy for Class-E and inverse Class-E amplifiers operating at high frequencies such that they can operate into unbalanced loads is proposed. This power combining method is particularly important for the inverse Class-E amplifier configuration whose single-stage topology is naturally limited for small-to-medium power applications. Design examples for the power combining synthesis of classical Class-E and then inverse Class-E amplifiers with specification 3 V-1.5 W-2.5 GHz are given. For this specification, it is shown that a three-branch combiner has a natural 50 V output impedance. The resulting circuits are simulated within Agilent Advanced Design Systems environment with good agreement to theoretical prediction. Further the performance of the proposed circuits when operated in a Linear amplification using Nonlinear Components transmitter configuration whereby two-branch amplifiers are driven with constant amplitude conjugate input phase signals is investigated.

BACKGROUND/AIMS:
Chronic inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis is associated with hypertension, myocardial ischemia, oxidative stress and hypertrophy; expression of the vasodilator peptide, adrenomedullin (AM) and its receptors is augmented in cardiomyocytes, indicating that the myocardial AM system may be activated in response to pressure loading and ischemic insult to serve a counter-regulatory, cardio-protective role. The study examined the hypothesis that oxidative stress and hypertrophic remodeling in NO-deficient cardiomyocytes are attenuated by adenoviral vector-mediated delivery of the human adrenomedullin (hAM) gene in vivo.
METHODS:
The NO synthesis inhibitor, N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 15mg . kg(-1) . day(-1)) was given to rats for 4 weeks following systemic administration via the tail vein of a single injection of either adenovirus harbouring hAM cDNA under the control of the cytomegalovirus promoter-enhancer (Ad.CMV-hAM-4F2), or for comparison, adenovirus alone (Ad.Null) or saline. Cardiomyocytes were subsequently isolated for assessment of the influence of each intervention on parameters of oxidative stress and hypertrophic remodelling.
RESULTS: Cardiomyocyte expression of the transgene persisted for > or =4 weeks following systemic administration of adenoviral vector. In L-NAME treated rats, relative to Ad.Null or saline administration, Ad.CMV-hAM-4F2 (i) reduced augmented cardiomyocyte membrane protein oxidation and mRNA expression of pro-oxidant (p22phox) and anti-oxidant (SOD-3, GPx) genes; (ii) attenuated increased cardiomyocyte width and mRNA expression of hypertrophic (sk-alpha-actin) and cardio-endocrine (ANP) genes; (iii) did not attenuate hypertension.
CONCLUSIONS: Adenoviral vector mediated delivery of hAM resulted in attenuation of myocardial oxidative stress and hypertrophic remodelling in the absence of blood pressure reduction in this model of chronic NO-deficiency. These findings are consistent with a direct cardio-protective action in the myocardium of locally-derived hAM which is not dependant on NO generation.

A recently introduced power-combining scheme for a Class-E amplifier is, for the first time, experimentally validated in this paper. A small value choke of 2.2 nH was used to substitute for the massive dc-feed inductance required in the classic Class-E circuit. The power-combining amplifier presented, which operates from a 3.2-V dc supply voltage, is shown to be able to deliver a 24-dBm output power and a 9.5-dB gain, with 64% drain efficiency and 57% power-added efficiency at 2.4 GHz. The power amplifier exhibits a 350-MHz bandwidth within which a drain efficiency that is better than 60% and an output power that is higher than 22 dBm were measured. In addition, by adopting three-harmonic termination strategy, excellent second-and third-harmonic suppression levels of 50 and 46 dBc, respectively, were obtained. Since the introduction of the European ban on hormones in 1989, its implementation has proved to be an enormous challenge to regulatory authorities, because the great economic benefits that result from illegal misuse of growth promoters in animal production encourage their continued use. In efforts to challenge black-market trade in hormones, there have been many analytical advances. Recently, both effect-based bioanalysis for screening to target illegal misuse and improved mass-spectrometry-based confirmatory analysis have greatly increased the likelihood of detecting hormone abuse. This review outlines analytical methods currently used for detecting hormone abuse and presents advances in new approaches based on biological determinants that may complement these techniques in the future. Ionic liquids have been used in combination with ball milling on a range of chlorophosphoramidite reagents to phosphitylate nucleosides and 2-deoxynucleosides. The enhanced stability offered by the ionic liquid mediated processes combined with efficient mass transfer induced by ball milling has enabled excellent yields to be obtained even when using small dialkyl amino groups as well as the more commonly used diisopropylamino protection.

In the future, biomass will continue to emerge as a viable source of chemicals. The development of new industries that utilize bio-renewables provides opportunities for innovation. For example, bio- and chemo-catalysts can be combined in 'one pot' to prepare chemicals of commercial value. This has been demonstrated using isolated enzymes and whole cells for a variety of chemical transformations. The one-pot approach has been successfully adopted to convert chemicals derived from biomass, and, in our opinion, it has an important role to play in the design of a more sustainable chemical industry. To implement new one-pot bio- and chemo-catalytic processes, issues of incompatibility must be overcome; the strategies for which are discussed in this opinion article.

The ability to synchronise actions with environmental events is a fundamental skill supporting a variety of group activities. In such situations, multiple sensory cues are usually available for synchronisation, yet previous studies have suggested that auditory cues dominate those from other modalities. We examine the control of rhythmic action on the basis of auditory and haptic cues and show that performance is sensitive to both sources of information for synchronisation. Participants were required to tap the dominant hand index finger in synchrony with a metronome defined by periodic auditory tones, imposed movements of the non-dominant index finger, or both cues together. Synchronisation was least variable with the bimodal metronome as predicted by a maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) model. However, increases in timing variability of the auditory cue resulted in some departures from the MLE model. Our findings indicate the need for further investigation of the MLE account of the integration of multisensory signals in the temporal control of action.

The application of the contingent valuation method (CVM) in this paper incorporates a prior preference ordering of several alternative future afforestation programmes which could be implemented in Ireland over the next decade. This particular experimental design is thereby shown to reveal the potentially conflicting preferences of different groups within society. These findings are used to devise appropriate CVM scenarios to take account, not only of the efficiency gains of choosing a single policy alternative over others, but also the effects on the distribution of non market benefit between different groups within society, arising from choice between alternatives.
