Soft matter pH sensing: from luminescent lanthanide pH switches in solution to sensing in hydrogels

The synthesis, complexation, and photophysical properties of the Eu(III)-based quinoline cyclen conjugate complex Eu1 and its permanent, noncovalent incorporation into hydrogels as sensitive, interference-free pH sensing materials for biological media are described. The Eu(III) emission in both solution and hydrogel media was switched reversibly on-off as a function of pH with a large, greater than order of magnitude enhancement in Eu(III) emission. The irreversible incorporation of Eu1 into water-permeable hydrogels was achieved using poly[methyl methacrylate-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate]- based hydrogels, and the luminescent properties of the novel sensor materials, using confocal laser- scanning microscopy and steady state luminescence, were characterized and demonstrated to be retained with respect to solution behavior. Water uptake and dehydration behavior of the sensor-incorporated materials was also characterized and shown to be dependent on the material composition.

Genealogies of Partition: History, History-Writing and 'The Troubles' in Ireland

Contemporary political disputes have a long history of expression and contestation through the genre of history-writing in Ireland. The role of history writing and political science writing during the nearly 40 years of the so-called 'Troubles' has been no exception to this. Battles between competing versions of what the conflict 'is about', mediated through academic and popular texts have themselves in turn become constitutive of it. This builds upon centuries of the representation of the complicated politics of this island as 'an issue' in British domestic politics - first 'the Catholic question', then 'the Irish question'. The location of political power outside the island for centuries has created successive battles for the representation of sectional interests in a metropolitan centre. The skills of propaganda, history writing, newspaper writing have consequently been deployed at a remarkable level of skill and intensity. In the recent period one of the consequences of this has been the removal from the debate of the actuality of partition; this builds upon a particular historical representation of partition as an historical inevitability. To seek to restore partition to the debate is not to call for its undoing but to recognise that seeking to circumvent debates about its origins in the key period of democratisation in Irish politics (1880-1920) has been counter-productive. This essay examines the genealogies of partition in Irish and international contexts in the light of these battles for representation, and aims to return a lost dimension to the debate about the so-called 'Troubles'in Ireland. The genealogy of partition is the issue that has been marginalised in academic study and this has affected both policy and politics.

Synthesis and characterisation of polymerisable photochromic spiropyrans: towards photomechanical biomaterials

A methodology for the synthesis of novel polymerisable spiropyrans with photomechanical properties suitable for subsequent copolymerisation with either vinyl or acrylate-based biomaterials is described. UV-vis spectroscopic characterisation of photoisomerism shows that photochromic behaviour with respect to related non-polymerisable compounds is retained and is solvent dependent. In acetone, conventional spiropyran-merocyanine photochromism is observed for nitro-spiropyran derivatives, whereas in dichloromethane both nitro-spiropyrans and spiropyrans isomerise to merocyanines which rapidly form H-aggregates. The monomers were designed such that an alkyl spacer of variable length, both electronically and sterically, separates the polymerisable moiety from the photochromic core and allows steric aspects of the resulting photomechanical behaviour to be explored. The UMIST Database for Astrochemistry 2006

We present a new version of the UMIST Database for Astrochemistry, the fourth such version to be released to the public. The current version contains some 4573 binary gas-phase reactions, an increase of 10% from the previous (1999) version, among 420 species, of which 23 are new to the database. Major updates have been made to ion-neutral reactions, neutral-neutral reactions, particularly at low temperature, and dissociative recombination reactions. We have included for the first time the interstellar chemistry of fluorine. In addition to the usual database, we have also released a reaction set in which the effects of dipole-enhanced ion-neutral rate coefficients are included. These two reactions sets have been used in a dark cloud model and the results of these models are presented and discussed briefly.
