The first thiazolium gold(III) compound that qualifies as an ionic liquid has been prepared and crystallographically characterized. Hydration of phenylacetylene with this compound as catalyst precursor in ionic liquids indicates that gold(Ill)based ionic liquids could serve both as solvents and catalysts for organic transformations. The potential re-use of catalysts is an advantage achieved by recycling the ionic liquid phase. Various imidazolium-derived ionic liquids as well as the new thiazolium compound can be converted into gold carbene complexes by sequential deprotonation and coordination, opening the way for in situ catalyst tailoring. Increased productivity and improved working environment have had high priority in the development of concrete construction over the last decade. Development of a material not needing vibration for compaction—i.e. selfcompacting concrete (SCC)—has successfully met the challenge and is now increasingly being used in routine practice. The key to the improvement of fresh concrete performance has been nanoscale tailoring of molecules for surface active admixtures, as well as improved understanding of particle packing and of the role of mineral surfaces in cementitious matrixes. Fundamental studies of rheological behaviour of cementitious particle suspensions were soon expanded to extensive innovation programmes incorporating applied research, site experiments, instrumented full scale applications supporting technology, standards and guides, information efforts as well as training programmes. The major impact of the introduction of SCC is connected to the production process. The choice and handling of constituents are modified as well as mix design, batching, mixing and transporting. The productivity is drastically improved through elimination of vibration compaction and process reorganisation. The working environment is significantly enhanced through avoidance of vibration induced damages, reduced noise and improved safety. Additionally, the technology is improving performance in terms of hardened material properties like surface quality, strength and durability.

There is an increasing need to identify the effect of mix composition on the rheological properties of cementitious grouts using minislump, Marsh cone, cohesion plate, washout test, and cubes to determine the fluidity, the cohesion, and other mechanical properties of grouting applications. Mixture proportioning involves the tailoring of several parameters to achieve adequate fluidity, cohesion, washout resistance and compressive strength. This paper proposes a statistical design approach using a composite fractional factorial design which was carried out to model the influence of key parameters on the performance of cement grouts. The responses relate to performance included minislump, flow time using Marsh cone, cohesion measured by Lombardi plate meter, washout mass loss and compressive strength at 3, 7, and 28 days. The statistical models are valid for mixtures with water-to-binder ratio of 0.37–0.53, 0.4–1.8% addition of high-range water reducer (HRWR) by mass of binder, 4–12% additive of silica fume as replacement of cement by mass, and 0.02–0.8% addition of viscosity modifying admixture (VMA) by mass of binder. The models enable the identification of underlying factors and interactions that influence the modeled responses of cement grout. The comparison between the predicted and measured responses indicated good accuracy of the established models to describe the effect of the independent variables on the fluidity, cohesion, washout resistance and the compressive strength. This paper demonstrates the usefulness of the models to better understand trade-offs between parameters. The multiparametric optimization is used to establish isoresponses for a desirability function for cement grout. An increase of HRWR led to an increase of fluidity and washout, a reduction in plate cohesion value, and a reduction in the Marsh cone time. An increase of VMA demonstrated a reduction of fluidity and the washout mass loss, and an increase of Marsh cone time and plate cohesion. Results indicate that the use of silica fume increased the cohesion plate and Marsh cone, and reduced the minislump. Additionally, the silica fume improved the compressive strength and the washout resistance.

Previous work has demonstrated the potential to introduce plate element sub-stiffening to increase the local stability and thus static strength performance of integrally machined aluminium alloy stiffened panels. The introduction of plate element prismatic sub-stiffening modifies local plate buckling behaviour and within realistic design constraints, may produce sizable performance gains with equivalent mass designs. This article examines through experimental and computational analysis the potential of non-prismatic sub-stiffening for tailoring local plate stability performance. Using non-prismatic sub-stiffening, the experimental work demonstrates potential initial buckling performance gains with equivalent mass designs (+185%), and computationally, potential mass savings with equivalent static strength performance designs (-9.4%). Initial sizing procedures for aircraft stiffened panels that include the influence of welding fabrication residual process effects are missing. Herein, experimental and Finite Element analyses are coupled to generate knowledge to formulate an accurate and computationally efficient sizing procedure which will enable designers to routinely consider panel fabrication, via welding, accounting for the complex distortions and stresses induced by this manufacturing process. Validating experimental results demonstrate the need to consider welding induced material property degradation, residual stresses and distortions, as these can reduce static strength performance. However, results from fuselage and wing trade-studies, using the validated sizing procedure, establish that these potential reductions in strength performance may be overcome through local geometric tailoring during initial sizing, negating any weight penalty for the majority of design scenarios.

For Variable Stiffness (VS) composites with steered curvilinear tow paths, the fiber orientation angle varies continuously throughout the laminate, and is not required to be straight, parallel and uniform within each ply as in conventional composite laminates. Hence, the thermal properties (conduction), as well as the structural stiffness and strength, vary as functions of location in the laminate, and the associated composite structure is often called a “variable stiffness” composite structure. The steered fibers lead not only to the alteration of mechanical load paths, but also to the alteration of thermal paths that may
result in favorable temperature distributions within the laminate and improve the laminate performance. Evaluation of VS laminate performance under thermal loading is the focus of this chapter. Thermal performance evaluations require experimental and numerical analysis of VS laminates under different processing and loading conditions. One of the advantages of using composite materials in many applications is the tailoring capability of the laminate,
not only during the design phase but also for manufacturing. Heat transfer through variable conduction and chemical reaction (degree of cure) occurring during manufacturing (curing) plays an important role in the final thermal and mechanical performance, and shape of composite structures.

Zeolites exchanged with transition metal cations Co2+, Mn2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ are capable of storing and delivering a large quantity of nitric oxide in a range of 1.2-2.7 mmolg(-1). The metal ion exchange impacts the pore volumes of zeolite FAU more significantly than LTA. The storage of NO mainly involves coordination of NO to metal cation sites. By exposing zeolites to a moisture atmosphere, the stored nitric oxide can be released. The NO release takes more than 2 hours for the NO concentration decreasing below similar to 5ppb in outlet gas. Its release rate can be controlled by tailoring zeolite frameworks and optimising release conditions.

By enabling subwavelength light localization and strong electromagnetic field enhancement, plasmonic biosensors have opened up a new realm of possibilities for a broad range of chemical and biological sensing applications owing to their label-free and real-time attributes. Although significant progress has been made, many fundamental and practical challenges still remain to be addressed. For instance, the plasmonic biosensors are nonselective sensing platforms; they are not well-suited to provide information regarding conformation or chemical fingerprint of unknown biomolecules. Furthermore, tunability of the plasmonic resonance in visible frequency regime is still limited; this will prevent their efficient and reproducible exploitation in single-molecule sensitivity. Here, we show that by engineering geometry of plasmonic metamaterials,1 consisting of periodic arrays of artificial split-ring resonators (SRRs), the plasmonic resonance of metamaterials could be tuned to visible-near infrared regimes (Vis-NIR) such that it allows parallel acquisition of optical transmission and highly surface-enhanced Raman (SERS) spectra from large functionalized SRR arrays. The Au SRRs were designed in form of alphabet letters (U, V, S, H, Y) with various line width (from 80 to 30 nm). By tailoring their size and shape, plasmonic resonance wavelength of the SRRs could be actively tuned so that it gives the strongest SERS effect under given excitation energy and polarization for biological and organic molecules. On the other hand, the plasmonic tunability was also achieved for a given SRR pattern by tuning the laser wavelength to obtain the highest electromagnetic field enhancement. The geometry- and laser-tunable channels typically provide an electromagnetic field enhancement as high as 20 times. This will provide the basis of versatile and multichannel devices for identification of different conformational states of Guanine-rich DNA, detection of a cancer biomarker nucleolin, and femtomolar sensitivity detection of food and drink additives. These results show that the tunable Vis-IR metamaterials are very versatile biosensing platforms and suggest considerable promise in genomic research, disease diagnosis, and food safety analysis.

We demonstrate a method for tailoring local mechanical properties near channel surfaces of vascular structural polymers in order to achieve high structural performance in microvascular systems. While synthetic vascularized materials have been created by a variety of manufacturing techniques, unreinforced microchannels act as stress concentrators and lead to the initiation of premature failure. Taking inspiration from biological tissues such as dentin and bone, these mechanical deficiencies can be mitigated by complex hierarchical structural features near to channel surfaces. By employing electrostatic layer-by-layer assembly (ELbL) to deposit films containing halloysite nanotubes onto scaffold surfaces followed by matrix infiltration and scaffold removal, we are able to controllably deposit nanoscale reinforcement onto 200 micron diameter channel surface interiors in microvascular networks. High resolution strain measurements on reinforced networks under load verify that the halloysite reduces strain concentrations and improves mechanical performance.

Fluorescence microscopy serves as a valuable tool for assessing the structural integrity and viability of eukaryotic cells. Through the use of calcein AM and the DNA stain 4,6-diamidino-2 phenylindole (DAPI), cell viability and membrane integrity can be qualified. Our group has previously shown the ultra-short cationic antimicrobial peptide H-OOWW-NH2; the amphibian derived 27-mer peptide Maximin-4and the ultra-short lipopeptide C12-OOWW-NH2 to be effective against a range of bacterial biofilms [1], displaying potential for use in the prevention of medical device-related infections [2]. Analysis of fluorescence micrographs, after staining with calcein AM and DAPI, shows the likely mode of cytotoxic action of cationic antimicrobial peptides and lipopeptides are via directmembrane disruption in eukaryotic cells. Selectivity is towards cidal action against prokaryotic cells, whose membranes are anionic in composition, such as those of bacteria, rather than for neutral zwitterionic membranes of eukaryotic cells. Membrane selectivity is determined by a multitude of physical parameters, particularly charge and hydrophobicity. The charge of the antimicrobial determines the extent of the initial electrostatic interactions with both prokaryotic and eukaryotic membranes, with a larger cationic charge favoring antimicrobial action. Tailoring of these properties is likely to be the key in successfully transferring antimicrobial peptides from laboratory experiments into clinical practice as safe pharmaceutical formulations.

Background: There is an urgent need to increase population levels of physical activity, particularly amongst those who are socio-economically disadvantaged. Multiple factors influence physical activity behaviour but the generalisability of current evidence to such ‘hard-to-reach’ population subgroups is limited by difficulties in recruiting them into studies. Also, rigorous qualitative studies of lay perceptions and perceptions of community leaders about public health efforts to increase physical activity are sparse. We sought to explore, within a socio-economically disadvantaged community, residents’ and community leaders’ perceptions of physical activity (PA) interventions and issues regarding their implementation, in order to improve understanding of needs, expectations, and social/environmental factors relevant to future interventions.

Methods: Within an ongoing regeneration project (Connswater Community Greenway), in a socio-economically disadvantaged community in Belfast, we collaborated with a Community Development Agency to purposively sample leaders from public- and voluntary-sector community groups and residents. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 leaders. Residents (n=113), of both genders and a range of ages (14 to 86 years) participated in focus groups (n=14) in local facilities. Interviews and focus groups were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using a thematic framework.

Results: Three main themes were identified: awareness of PA interventions; factors contributing to intervention effectiveness; and barriers to participation in PA interventions. Participants reported awareness only of interventions in which they were involved directly, highlighting a need for better communications, both inter- and intra-sectoral, and with residents. Meaningful engagement of residents in planning/organisation, tailoring to local context, supporting volunteers, providing relevant resources and an ‘exit strategy’ were perceived as important factors related to intervention effectiveness. Negative attitudes such as apathy, disappointing experiences, information with no perceived personal relevance and limited access to facilities were barriers to people participating in interventions.

Conclusions: These findings illustrate the complexity of influences on a community’s participation in PA interventions and support a social-ecological approach to promoting PA. They highlight the need for cross-sector working, effective information exchange, involving residents in bottom-up planning and providing adequate financial and social support. An in-depth understanding of a target population’s perspectives is of key importance in translating PA behaviour change theories into practice.

The increased construction and reconstruction of smart substations has exposed a problem with version management of substation configuration description language (SCL) files due to frequent changes. This paper proposes a comparative approach for differentiation of smart substation SCL configuration files. A comparison model for SCL configuration files is built in this method, which is based on the SCL structure and abstract model defined by IEC 61850. The proposed approach adopts the algorithms of depth-first traversal, sorting, and cross comparison in order to rapidly identify differences of changed SCL configuration files. This approach can also be utilized to detect malicious tampering or illegal manipulation tailoring for SCL files. SCL comparison software is developed using the Qt platform to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Microneedles (MNs) are a minimally invasive drug delivery platform, designed to enhance transdermal drug delivery by breaching the stratum corneum. For the first time, this study describes the simultaneous delivery of a combination of three drugs using a dissolving polymeric MN system. In the present study, aspirin, lisinopril dihydrate, and atorvastatin calcium trihydrate were used as exemplar cardiovascular drugs and formulated into MN arrays using two biocompatible polymers, poly(vinylpyrrollidone) and poly(methylvinylether/maleic acid). Following fabrication, dissolution, mechanical testing, and determination of drug recovery from the MN arrays, in vitro drug delivery studies were undertaken, followed by HPLC analysis. All three drugs were successfully delivered in vitro across neonatal porcine skin, with similar permeation profiles achieved from both polymer formulations. An average of 126.3 ± 18.1 μg of atorvastatin calcium trihydrate was delivered, notably lower than the 687.9 ± 101.3 μg of lisinopril and 3924 ± 1011 μg of aspirin, because of the hydrophobic nature of the atorvastatin molecule and hence poor dissolution from the array. Polymer deposition into the skin may be an issue with repeat application of such a MN array, hence future work will consider more appropriate MN systems for continuous use, alongside tailoring delivery to less hydrophilic compounds.

High density polyethylene (HDPE)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing using twin-screw extrusion. The extruded pellets were compression moulded at 200°C for 5min followed by cooling at different cooling rates (20°C/min and 300°C/min respectively) to produce sheets for characterization. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the MWCNTs are uniformly dispersed in the HDPE. At 4 wt% addition of MWCNTs composite modulus increased by over 110% compared with the unfilled HDPE (regardless of the cooling rate). The yield strength of both unfilled and filled HDPE decreased after rapid cooling by about 10% due to a lower crystallinity and imperfect crystallites. The electrical percolation threshold of composites, irrespective of the cooling rate, is between a MWCNT concentration of 1∼2 wt%. Interestingly, the electrical resistivity of the rapidly cooled composite with 2 wt% MWCNTs is lower than that of the slowly cooled composites with the same MWCNT loading. This may be due to the lower crystallinity and smaller crystallites facilitating the formation of conductive pathways. This result may have significant implications for both process control and the tailoring of electrical conductivity in the manufacture of conductive HDPE/MWCNT nanocomposites.
