A pre-concentration system has been validated for use with a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/isotope ratio mass spectrometer (GC/MS/IRMS) to determine ambient air 13C/12C ratios for methyl halides (MeCl and MeBr) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The isotopic composition of specific compounds can provide useful information on their atmospheric budgets and biogeochemistry that cannot be ascertained from abundance measurements alone. Although pre-concentration systems have been previously used with a GC/MS/IRMS for atmospheric trace gas analysis, this is the first study also to report system validation tests. Validation results indicate that the pre-concentration system and subsequent separation technologies do not significantly alter the stable isotopic ratios of the target methyl halides, CFC-12 (CCl2F2) and CFC-113 (C2Cl3F3). Significant, but consistent, isotopic shifts of -27.5 to -25.6 do occur within the system for CFC-11 (CCl3F), although the shift is correctible. The method presented has the capacity to separate these target halocarbons from more than 50 other compounds in ambient air samples. Separation allows for the determination of stable carbon isotope ratios of five of these six target trace atmospheric constituents within ambient air for large volume samples (10 L). Representative urban air analyses from Belfast City are also presented which give carbon isotope results similar to published values for 13C/12C analysis of MeCl (-39.1) and CFC-113 (-28.1). However, this is the first paper reporting stable carbon isotope signatures for CFC-11 (-29.4) and CFC-12 (-37.0).

Effective collision strengths for transitions among the energetically lowest 46 fine-structure levels belonging to the (1s(2)) 2S(2) 2p(2), 2s2p(3), 2p(4), 2S(2)2p3s, 2s(2)2p3p and 2S(2)2p3d configurations of Fe XXI are computed, over an electron temperature range of 5.6 less than or equal to log T-e less than or equal to 7.4 K, using the recent Dirac Atomic R- matrix Code (DARC) of Norrington and Grant. Results are presented for transitions within the ground configuration only, and are compared with earlier R matrix calculations. Large discrepancies are observed for many transitions, especially at lower temperatures.

A large-scale configuration interaction (Cl) calculation using Program CIV3 of Hibbert is performed for the lowest 62 fine- structure levels of the singly charged chlorine ion. Our calculated energy levels agree very well with most of the NIST results and confirm the identification of the lowest P-1(o) as actually 3s(2)3p(3)(D-2(o))3d P-1(o) rather than the generally employed 3s3p(5) P-1(o) in measurements and calculations. Discrepancies in the energy positions of some symmetries are found and discussed. Some large oscillator strengths for allowed and intercombination transitions in both length and velocity gauges are presented. Their close agreement gives credence to the accuracy of our CI wavefunctions.

A force field model of phosphorus has been developed based on density functional (DF) computations and experimental results, covering low energy forms of local tetrahedral symmetry and more compact (simple cubic) structures that arise with increasing pressure. Rules tailored to DF data for the addition, deletion, and exchange of covalent bonds allow the system to adapt the bonding configuration to the thermodynamic state. Monte Carlo simulations in the N-P-T ensemble show that the molecular (P-4) liquid phase, stable at low pressure P and relatively low temperature T, transforms to a polymeric (gel) state on increasing either P or T. These phase changes are observed in recent experiments at similar thermodynamic conditions, as shown by the close agreement of computed and measured structure factors in the molecular and polymer phases. The polymeric phase obtained by increasing pressure has a dominant simple cubic character, while the polymer obtained by raising T at moderate pressure is tetrahedral. Comparison with DF results suggests that the latter is a semiconductor, while the cubic form is metallic. The simulations show that the T-induced polymerization is due to the entropy of the configuration of covalent bonds, as in the polymerization transition in sulfur. The transition observed with increasing P is the continuation at high T of the black P to arsenic (A17) structure observed in the solid state, and also corresponds to a semiconductor to metal transition. An overview of a many-body approach to calculation of electronic transport in molecular systems is given. The physics required to describe electronic transport through a molecule at the many-body level, without relying on commonly made assumptions such as the Landauer formalism or linear response theory, is discussed. Physically, our method relies on the incorporation of scattering boundary conditions into a many-body wavefunction and application of the maximum entropy principle to the transport region. Mathematically, this simple physical model translates into a constrained nonlinear optimization problem. A strategy for solving the constrained optimization problem is given. The configuration interaction (CI) approach to quantum chemical calculations is a well-established means of calculating accurately the solution to the Schrodinger equation for many-electron systems. It represents the many-body electron wavefunction as a sum of spin-projected Slater determinants of orthogonal one-body spin-orbitals. The CI wavefunction becomes the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation as the length of the expansion becomes infinite, however, it is a difficult quantity to visualise and analyse for many-electron problems. We describe a method for efficiently calculating the spin-averaged one- and two-body reduced density matrices rho(psi)((r) over bar; (r) over bar' ) and Gamma(psi)((r) over bar (1), (r) over bar (2); (r) over bar'(1), (r) over bar'(2)) of an arbitrary CI wavefunction Psi. These low-dimensional functions are helpful tools for analysing many-body wavefunctions; we illustrate this for the case of the electron-electron cusp. From rho and Gamma one can calculate the matrix elements of any one- or two-body spin-free operator (O) over cap. For example, if (O) over cap is an applied electric field, this field can be included into the CI Hamiltonian and polarisation or gating effects may be studied for finite electron systems. Metal nanoclusters can be produced cheaply and precisely in an electrochemical environment. Experimentally this method works in some systems, but not in others, and the unusual stability of the clusters has remained a mystery. We have simulated the deposition of the clusters using classical molecular dynamics and studied their stability by grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations. We find that electrochemically stable clusters occur only in those cases where the two metals involved form stable alloys.

Decreased survival in patients with cystic fibrosis has been related to FEV1, BMI, and infection with Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC). We have assessed the relationship of blood, sputum, and urine inflammatory markers to lung function, BMI, colonization with B cenocepacia (Bc), and patient survival. Thirty-nine stable cystic fibrosis (CF) patients (10 with Bc) were enrolled in a study to determine the effect of alpha-1-antitrypsin on airways inflammation. Pre-treatment measurements were used in this study. Demographics, sputum microbiology, heart rate, oxygen saturation, lung function were recorded. Blood samples were obtained for white blood count (WBC), C-Reactive Protein (CRP), and plasma neutrophil elastase/AAT complexes (pNEC). Neutrophil elastase (NE), neutrophil elastase/AAT complexes (sNEC), interleukin-8 (IL-8), TNF-receptor 1 (sTNFr), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were measured in sputum and urinary desmosine concentration determined. Patients with Bc had significantly higher levels of pNEC, 332?±?91.4 ng/ml (mean?±?SEM) versus 106?±?18.2 ng/ml (P?=?0.0005) and sNEC, 369?±?76.6 ng/ml versus 197?±?36.0 ng/ml compared to those who were not. Five deaths were reported at the end of 1 year, (four with Bc) (P?=?0.011). Patients who subsequently died had significantly lower lung function FEV1, 1.2?±?0.2 L versus 2.0?±?0.1 L (P?=?0.03) and FVC, 2?±?0.3 L versus 3.1?±?0.2 L (P?=?0.01), compared to those that survived. There was significantly higher NE activity, 3.6?±?1.6 U/ml versus 1.5?±?0.6 U/ml (P?=?0.03), pNEC, 274?±?99 ng/ml versus 142?±?30 ng/ml (P?=?0.05), MPO, 163?±?62 mcg/ml versus 54?±?6.9 mcg/ml (P?=?0.03), and urinary desmosines 108?±?19.9 pM/mg creatinine versus 51.1?±?3.3 pM/mg creatinine (P?=?0.001), in those patients who subsequently died compared to those that survived. These data suggest there is increased neutrophil degranulation in patients infected with Bc and these patients have a poor outcome.
