The H+NO2 titration scheme for the determination of atomic hydrogen densities within a microwave excited flow tube reactor has been investigated by laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy in the vacuum UV. Absolute hydrogen densities are determined on the basis of calibration by Rayleigh scattering from argon. The measurement is performed at a gas mixture containing 0.5% of D2 added to the main gas H2. The ground state density of the hydrogen atoms generated in the flow tube reactor was inferred from the fluorescence radiation of the spectrally shifted optically thin D-Lyman-a transition.

Contemporary medical science is reliant upon the rational selection and utilization of devices, and therefore, an increasing need has developed for in vitro systems aimed at replicating the conditions to which urological devices will be subjected to during their use in vivo. We report the development and validation of a novel continuous flow encrustation model based on the commercially available CDC biofilm reactor. Proteus mirabilis-induced encrustation formation on test biomaterial sections under varying experimental parameters was analyzed by X-ray diffraction, infrared- and Raman spectroscopy and by scanning electron microscopy. The model system produced encrusted deposits similar to those observed in archived clinical samples. Results obtained for the system are highly reproducible with encrustation being rapidly deposited on test biomaterial sections. This model will have utility in the rapid screening of encrustation behavior of biomaterials for use in urological applications. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals. Inc. The paper describes the principal features of Omnivore, a spark-ignition-based research engine designed to investigate the possibility of true wide-range HCCI operation on a variety of fossil and renewable liquid fuels. The engine project is part-funded jointly by the United Kingdom's Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Department of the Environment of Northern Ireland (DoENI). The engineering team includes Lotus Engineering, Jaguar Cars, Orbital Corporation and Queen's University Belfast.

A Time of flight (ToF) mass spectrometer suitable in terms of sensitivity, detector response and time resolution, for application in fast transient Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) kinetic catalyst characterization is reported. Technical difficulties associated with such application as well as the solutions implemented in terms of adaptations of the ToF apparatus are discussed. The performance of the ToF was validated and the full linearity of the specific detector over the full dynamic range was explored in order to ensure its applicability for the TAP application. The reported TAP-ToF setup is the first system that achieves the high level of sensitivity allowing monitoring of the full 0-200 AMU range simultaneously with sub-millisecond time resolution. In this new setup, the high sensitivity allows the use of low intensity pulses ensuring that transport through the reactor occurs in the Knudsen diffusion regime and that the data can, therefore, be fully analysed using the reported theoretical TAP models and data processing.

Determination of metal oxidation state under relevant working conditions is crucial to understand catalytic behaviour. The reduction behaviour of Pt and Re was evaluated simultaneously as a function of support and solvent in a pressurized reactor (autoclave). The bimetallic catalysts are used in selective hydrogenation of carboxylic acids and amides. Gas phase reduction reduced the metals more efficiently, in particular Pt.

The performance optimisation of automotive catalysts has been the focus of a great deal of research for many years as the automotive industry has endeavored to reduce the emission of toxic and pollutant gases generated from internal combustion engines. Just as the emissions from diesel and gasoline combustion vary so do the emissions from combustion of alternative fuels such as ethanol; the variation is in both quantity and chemical composition. In particular, when ethanol is contained in the fuel, ethanol and acetaldehyde are present in the exhaust gas stream and these are two compounds which the catalytic converter has not traditionally been designed to manage. The aim of the study outlined in this paper was to assess the performance of various catalyst formulations when subjected to a representative ethanol exhaust gas mixture. Three automotive catalytic converter formulations were tested including a fully Pt sample, a PdRh three-way catalyst sample and a fully Pd sample. Initially the samples were tested using single component hydrocarbon light-off tests followed by a set of tests with carbon monoxide included as an inlet gas to observe its effect on each individual hydrocarbon oxidation. Finally, each formulation was tested using a full E85 exhaust gas mixture. The study was carried out using a synthetic gas reactor along with FTIR and FID exhaust gas analysers. All formulations showed selectivity toward acetaldehyde formation from ethanol dehydrogenation which resulted in negative acetaldehyde conversion across each of the samples during the mixture tests. The fully Pt sample was the most detrimentally affected by the introduction of carbon monoxide into the gas feed. The Pd and PdRh samples exhibited a tendency toward acetaldehyde decomposition resulting in methane and carbon monoxide formation. The Pt sample did not form methane but did form ethylene as a result of ethanol dehydration.

A microwave reactor system was investigated as a potential technique to maximize sugar yield for the hydrolysis of municipal solid waste for ethanol production. Specifically, dilute acid hydrolysis of a-cellulose and waste cellulosic biomass (grass clippings) with phosphoric acid was undertaken within the microwave reactor system. The experimental data and reaction kinetic analysis indicate that the use of a microwave reactor system can successfully facilitate dilute acid hydrolysis of cellulose and waste cellulosic biomass, producing high yields of total sugars in short reaction times. The maximum yield of reducing sugars was obtained at 7.5% (w/v) phosphoric acid and 160 degrees C, corresponding to 60% of the theoretical total sugars, with a reaction time of 5 min. When using a very low acid concentration (0.4% w/v) for the hydrolysis in the microwave reactor, it was found that 10 g of total sugars/100 g dry mass was produced, which is significant considering the low acid concentration. When hydrolyzing grass clippings using the microwave reactor, the optimum conditions were an acid concentration of 2.5% (w/v), 175 degrees C with a 15 min reaction time, giving 18 g/100 g dry mass of total sugars, with xylose being the sugar with the highest yield. It was observed that pentose sugars were more easily formed but also more easily degraded, these being significantly affected by increases in acid concentration and temperature. Kinetic modeling of the data indicated that the use of microwave heating may account for an increase in reaction rate constant, k(1), found in this study in comparison with conventional systems described in the literature.
