Circus 1 to 3 is a circus school, based on the concept of New Circus, for boys resident in St. Patrick's Training School, Northern Ireland. The project is designed, not only to teach Circus skills, but also to foster social and personal skills. This report details an evaluation undertaken to assess die extent to which this programme meets these aims. A study of participants Circus records indicated that significant gains in co-operative behaviour, team-work, attitude and participation, as rated by Circus tutors, were evident over the course of boys involvement. A qualitative study was also conducted. These interviews with Circus 1 to 3 participants indicated that this project enhanced the quality of life for boys resident in St. Patrick's Training School. In addition the project, through the use of positive feedback, provides opportunities for boys to develop their social and personal skills. This evaluation concludes that Circus 1 to 3 is a worthwhile and successful endeavour.

Evidence that activating mutations of the KRAS oncogene abolish the response to anti-epidermal growth factor receptor therapy has revolutionized the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer. This has resulted in the urgent demand for KRAS mutation testing in the clinical setting to aid choice of therapy. The Am of this study was to evaluate six different KRAS mutation detection methodologies on two series of primary colorectal cancer samples. Two series of 80 frozen and 74 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples were sourced and DNA was extracted at a central site before distribution to seven different testing sites. KRAS mutations in codons 12 and 13 were assessed by using single strand conformation polymorphism analysis, pyrosequencing, high resolution melting analysis, dideoxy sequencing, or the commercially available TIB Molbiol (Berlin, Germany) or DxS Diagnostic innovations (Manchester, UK) kits. in frozen tissue samples, concordance in KRAS status (defined as consensus in at least five assays) was observed in 66/80 (83%) cases. In par-affin tissue, concordance was 46/74 (63%) if all assays were considered or 71/74 (96%) using the five best performing assays. These results demonstrate that a variety of detection methodologies are suitable and provide comparable results for KRAS mutation analysis of clinical samples. Blood cultures have an important role in the diagnosis of serious infections, although contamination of blood cultures (i.e. false-positive blood cultures) is a common problem within the hospital setting. The objective of the present investigation was to determine the impact of the false-positive blood culture results on the following outcomes: length of stay, hotel costs, antimicrobial costs, and costs of laboratory and radiological investigation. A retrospective case-control study design was used in which 142 false-positive blood culture cases were matched with suitable controls (patients for whom cultures were reported as true negatives). The matching criteria included age, comorbidity score and month of admission to the hospital. The research covered a 13-month period (July 2007 to July 2008). The findings indicated that differences in means, between cases and controls, for the length of hospital stay and the total costs were 5.4 days [95% CI (confidence interval): 2.8-8.1 days; P
