Methane activation is a crucial step in the conversion of methane to valuable oxygenated products. In heterogeneous catalysis, however, methane activation often leads to complete dissociation: If a catalyst can activate the first C-H bond in CH4, it can often break the remaining C-H bonds. In this study, using density functional theory, we illustrate that single C-H bond activation in CH4 is possible. We choose a model system which consists of isolated Pt atoms on a MoO3(010) surface. We find that the Pt atoms on this surface can readily activate the first C-H bond in methane. The reaction barrier of only 0.3 eV obtained in this study is significantly lower than that on a Pt(111) surface. We also find, in contrast to the processes on pure metal surfaces, that the further dehydrogenation of methyl (CH3) is very energetically unfavorable on the MoO3-supported Pt catalyst. The production of hydrogen by steam reforming of bio-oils obtained from the fast pyrolysis of biomass requires the development of efficient catalysts able to cope with the complex chemical nature of the reactant. The present work focuses on the use of noble metal-based catalysts for the steam reforming of a few model compounds and that of an actual bio-oil. The steam reforming of the model compounds was investigated in the temperature range 650-950 degrees C over Pt, Pd and Rh supported on alumina and a ceria-zirconia sample. The model compounds used were acetic acid, phenol, acetone and ethanol. The nature of the support appeared to play a significant role in the activity of these catalysts. The use of ceria-zirconia, a redox mixed oxide, lead to higher H-2 yields as compared to the case of the alumina-supported catalysts. The supported Rh and Pt catalysts were the most active for the steam reforming of these compounds, while Pd-based catalysts poorly performed. The activity of the promising Pt and Rh catalysts was also investigated for the steam reforming of a bio-oil obtained from beech wood fast pyrolysis. Temperatures close to, or higher than, 800 degrees C were required to achieve significant conversions to COx and H-2 (e.g., H-2 yields around 70%). The ceria-zirconia materials showed a higher activity than the corresponding alumina samples. A Pt/ceria-zirconia sample used for over 9 h showed essentially constant activity, while extensive carbonaceous deposits were observed on the quartz reactor walls from early time on stream. In the present case, no benefit was observed by adding a small amount of O-2 to the steam/bio-oil feed (autothermal reforming, ATR), probably partly due to the already high concentration of oxygen in the bio-oil composition. Three supported La0.8Sr0.2MnO3+x catalysts were prepared, one supported on lanthanum-stabilised alumina and two supported on a NiAl2O4 spinel. The catalysts were characterised using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and surface area measurements following heat-treatments at temperatures up to 1200 degreesC in air. In the alumina-supported catalyst, a reaction occurred between the active phase and the support at high temperatures, indicating that these materials would be unsuitable for high temperature catalytic combustion. Only in the NiAl2O4-supported catalysts were the supported perovskite phases found to be stable at high temperature. These catalysts showed good methane combustion activity. A detailed theoretical analysis has been carried out to study efficient heating due to microwaves for one-dimensional (1D) oil–water emulsion samples placed on various ceramic, metallic (reflective) and ceramic–metallic composite supports. Two typical emulsion systems are considered such as oil-in-water (o/w) and water-in-oil (w/o). A preliminary study has been carried out via average power vs emulsion thickness diagram to estimate microwave power absorption within emulsion samples for various cases. The maxima in average power, also termed as ‘resonances’, are observed for specific emulsion thicknesses and the two consecutive resonances of significant magnitudes are termed as R1 and R2 modes. For both o/w and w/o emulsions, it is observed that microwave power absorption is enhanced in presence of metallic and composite supports during both R1 and R2 modes. The efficient heating strategies characterized by ‘large heating rates’ with ‘minimal thermal runaway’ i.e. uniform temperature distributions within the sample have been assessed for each type of emulsion. Based on the detailed spatial distributions of power and temperature for various cases, SiC-metallic composite support may be recommended as an optimal heating strategy for o/w samples with higher oil fractions (0.45) whereas metallic and Alumina-metallic composite supports may be favored for samples with smaller oil fractions (=0.3) during R1 mode. For w/o samples, SiC-metallic composite support may be suitable heating strategy for all ranges of water fractions during R1 mode. During R2 mode, metallic and Alumina-metallic composite supports are favored for both o/w and w/o emulsion samples. Current study recommends the efficient way to use microwaves in a single mode waveguide and the heating strategy can be suitably extended for heating of any other emulsions for which dielectric properties are easily measurable or available in the literature.

The coordination of olefins to square-planar Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes containing 2,9-dimethylphenanthroline (L1) often involves a change of color associated with a change of geometry at the metal center. In order to obtain suitable colorimetric detectors for ethylene gas, a series of new Pd(II) and Pt(II) compounds with a range of 2,9-disubstituted phenanthroline ligands [2,9-di-n-butyl-1,10-phenanthroline (L-2), 2,9-di-s-butyl-1,10-phenanthroline (L3), 2,9-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (L4), and 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bathocuproine, L5)] have been prepared and their reactivity toward ethylene investigated both in solution and after depositing the detector compounds on a variety of solid supports. The Pd(II) complex [PdCl2(L2)] supported on silica undergoes a clear color change upon exposure to ethylene, while remaining stable toward air and water, and forms the basis for new simple colorimetric detectors with potential applications in ethylene pipe-leak detection and the monitoring of fruit ripening. Encouragingly, the detector is able to discriminate between fruit at different stages of ripening. The response of the detector to other volatiles was also examined, and specific color changes were also observed upon exposure to aromatic acetylenes. The crystal structures of four new derivatives, including the ethylene-Pt(II) complex [PtCl2(C2H4)(L2)], are also described.

The active site in supported gold catalysts for the carbonylation of methanol has been identified as dimers/trimers of gold which are formed from large gold particles >10 nm in diameter. Methyl iodide was found to be critical for this dispersion process and to maintain the catalyst in the active form. This study also shows that it may be possible to redisperse gold catalysts, in general, after reaction.

KF, LiF and CsF/A(2)O(3) catalysts with different loadings from 1 to 20 wt% were prepared using aqueous solutions of the alkaline fluoride compounds by wet impregnation of basic mesoporous MSU-type alumina. The catalysts were activated under At at 400 degrees C for 2 h and monitored by in situ XRD measurements. The catalysts were also characterized using several techniques: N-2 adsorption/desorption isotherms at -196 degrees C, FTIR, DR-UV-vis, CO2-TPD, XRD, Al-27 CP/MAS NMR. These characterizations led to the conclusion that the deposition of alkaline fluorides on the alumina surface generates fluoroaluminates and aluminate species. The process is definitivated at 400 degrees C. The fluorine in these structures is less basic than in the parent fluorides, but the oxygen becomes more basic. The catalysts were tested for the transesterification of fatty esters under different experimental conditions using conventional heating, microwave and Ultrasound irradiation. Recycling experiments showed that these catalysts are stable for a limited number of cycles. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Dodecatungsto-silicic H4SiW12O40 and -phosphoric acids H3PW12O40 were deposited on silica by a classical impregnation technique. The resulting materials were studied by in situ Raman and infrared spectroscopy, XPS and by solid-state H-1 MAS NMR as a function of their dehydroxylation temperature. The data show that in the case of H3PW12O40 three silanol groups are protonated while in the case of H4SiW12O40 at least one acidic proton remains. Upon heating this proton reacts leading to a disordered structure and a broadening of the W-O Raman bands.
