This paper studies the ergodic capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with a single co-channel interferer in the low signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regime. Two MIMO models namely Rician and Rayleigh-product channels are investigated. Exact analytical expressions for the minimum energy per information bit, Eb/N0min, and wideband slope, S0, are derived for both channels. Our results show that the minimum energy per information bit is the same for both channels while their wideband slopes differ significantly. Further, the impact of the numbers of transmit and receive antennas, the Rician K factor, the channel mean matrix and the interference-to-noise-ratio (INR) on the capacity, is addressed. Results indicate that interference degrades the capacity by increasing the required minimum energy per information bit and reducing the wideband slope. Simulation results validate our analytical results.

Recent theoretical investigations of spatially correlated multitransmit and multireceive (MTMR) links show that not only independently and identically distributed links, but also spatially correlated links can offer linear capacity growth with increasing number of transmit and receive antennas. In this paper, we explore the suitability of the turbo-BLAST architecture in correlated Rayleigh-fading MTMR environments. In particular, for an MTMR system with a large number of receive antennas, a near optimal performance can be achieved by the turbo-BLAST architecture in spatially and temporarily correlated Rayleigh-fading environments. The performance of turbo-BLAST, in terms of both bit-error rate and spectral efficiency, is analyzed empirically in indoors and correlated outdoor environments.

We report experimental evidence for a Rayleigh-Taylor-like instability driven by radiation pressure of an ultraintense (1021W/cm2) laser pulse. The instability is witnessed by the highly modulated profile of the accelerated proton beam produced when the laser irradiates a 5 nm diamondlike carbon (90% C, 10% H) target. Clear anticorrelation between bubblelike modulations of the proton beam and transmitted laser profile further demonstrate the role of the radiation pressure in modulating the foil. Measurements of the modulation wavelength, and of the acceleration from Doppler-broadening of back-reflected light, agree quantitatively with particle-in-cell simulations performed for our experimental parameters and which confirm the existence of this instability. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Band excitation piezoresponse force microscopy enables local investigation of the nonlinear piezoelectric behavior of ferroelectric thin films. However, the presence of additional nonlinearity associated with the dynamic resonant response of the tip-surface junction can complicate the study of a material's nonlinearity. Here, the relative importance of the two nonlinearity sources was examined as a function of the excitation function. It was found that in order to minimize the effects of nonlinear tip-surface interactions but achieve good signal to noise level, an optimal excitation function must be used. A proof-of-concept study was reported on analysis of antigen–antibody recognition based on resonant Rayleigh scattering response of single Au nanoparticles in an imaging chamber. As benefited by a traditional dark-field microscope and a spectrograph, individual Au nanoparticles (30 nm) were observed with high signal-to-noise ratio and they were effectively utilized to monitor changes in refractive index induced by specific binding of the adsorbates. Using PSA antigen as a model, a LSPR ?max shift of about 2.85 nm was recorded for a molecular binding corresponding to 0.1 pg ml-1 of the protein biomarker. This result successfully demonstrates a non-labeling detection system for proteins as well as thousands of different chemical or biological species, and it possesses a great potential as a sensitive, on-chip and multiplexing detection.

A proof-of-concept study was reported on analysis of antigen-antibody recognition based on resonant Rayleigh scattering response of single Au nanoparticles on a microimaging chamber. As benefited by a traditional dark-field microscope and a spectrograph, tiny 30 nm Au nanoparticles were effectively used as nanosensors to monitor changes in refractive index induced by every single binding of the adsorbates. The individual Au nanoparticles were observed with very high signal-to-noise ratio, and a LSPR ?max shift of about 2.5 nm accounting for the detection of PSA antigen with concentration as low as 0.1 pg ml-1 was recorded. This resulted in the successful demonstration of a non-labelling detection system for proteins as well as thousands of different chemical or biological species with possibility of miniaturization and multiplexing scheme.

In this paper, we investigate the physical layer secrecy performance of a single-input single-output system that consists of single antenna devices and operates in the presence of a single antenna passive eavesdropper over dissimilar fading channels. In particular, we consider two scenarios in terms of dissimilar fading channel arrangements: the legal/illegal channels are subject to Rayleigh/Rician fading, respectively; and the legal/illegal channels are subject to Rician/Rayleigh fading, respectively. Specifically, analytical expressions for the probability of the existence of a non-zero secrecy capacity and the secrecy outage probability are derived by using statistical characteristics of the signal-to-noise ratio. Numerical results are provided for selected scenarios to illustrate applications of the developed analytical expressions.
