The structure of tris-chloro[2,6-bis(2'-pyridyl)-4-(2'-pyridinium)-1,3,5-triazine]cobalt(II) monohydrate, [Co(C18H13N6)Cl-3]center dot H2O (C2/c (No. 15), a = 7.783(11), b = 22.42(3), c = 11.001(15) angstrom, beta = 90.05(2)degrees), crystallized from the open air reaction of CoCl2 and 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine in the ionic liquid, N-butyl-N-methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide is reported. The structure consists of six coordinate cobalt in an octahedral geometry bonded to the tridentate tptz ligand and three chlorines. The non-coordinating pyridyl group in the tptz ligand is protonated (with the protonated nitrogen crystallographically disordered over two possible sites), providing overall charge neutrality for the complex.

Incorporation of 1-alkylcarbonyloxymethylprodrugs of 5FU into poly(lactide-co-glycolide) nanoparticles using nanoprecipitation methods gave increased loading efficiencies over that obtained using the parent drug substance. SEM studies revealed spherical nanoparticles of around 200 nm in diameter, corresponding well with measurements made using photon correlation spectroscopy. The C-7 prodrug gave the best mean loading of 47.23%, which compared favourably to 3.68% loading achieved with 5FU. Loading efficiency was seen to follow the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance in the homologue series, where increases in lipophilicities alone were not good predictors of loading. Drug release, in terms of resultant 5FU concentration, was monitored using a flow-through dissolution apparatus. Cumulative drug release from nanoparticles loaded with the C-5 prodrug was linear over 6h, with approximately 14% of the total available 5FU dose released and with no evidence of a burst effect. The flux profile of the C-5-loaded nanoparticles showed an initial peak in flux in the first sampling interval, but became linear for the remainder of the release phase. C-7-loaded nanoparticles released considerably less (4% in 6 h) with a similar flux pattern to that seen with the C-5 prodrug. The C-9-loaded nanoparticles released less than 1% of the available 5FU over 6 h, with a similar zero-order profile. The C7 prodrug was deemed to be the prodrug of choice, achieving the highest loadings and releasing 5FU, following hydrolysis, in a zero-order fashion over a period of at least 6 h. Given the lack of burst effect and steady-state flux conditions, this nanoparticulate formulation offers a better dosing strategy for sustained intravenous use when compared to that arising from nanoparticles made by direct incorporation of 5FU. The ruthenium(II) diimine complexes, such as ruthenium(II) tris( bipyridyl), Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), possess highly luminescent excited states that are not only readily quenched by oxygen but also by an increase in temperature. The former effect can be rendered insignificant by encapsulating the complex in an oxygen impermeable polymer, although encapsulation often leads also to a loss of temperature sensitivity. The luminescence properties of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) encapsulated in PVA were studied as a function of oxygen concentration and temperature and found to be independent of the former, but still very sensitive towards the latter. The results were fitted to an established Arrhenius-type equation, based on thermal quenching of the emitting state by a slightly higher (Delta E = 3100 cm(-1)) (3)d-d state that deactivates very rapidly (10(-13) s) via a non-radiative process.

We characterized hydrogels, prepared from aqueous blends of poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic acid) (PMVE/MA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG 10,000 Daltons) containing a pore-forming agent (sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO ). Increase in NaHCO content increased the equilibrium water content (EWC) and average molecular weight between crosslinks (M ) of hydrogels. For example, the %EWC was 731, 860, 1109, and 7536% and the M was 8.26, 31.64, 30.04, and 3010.00 × 10 g/mol for hydrogels prepared from aqueous blends containing 0, 1, 2, and 5% w/w of NaHCO , respectively. Increase in NaHCO content also resulted in increased permeation of insulin. After 24 h, percentage permeation was 0.94, 3.68, and 25.71% across hydrogel membranes prepared from aqueous blends containing 0, 2, and 5% w/w of NaHCO , respectively. Hydrogels containing the pore-forming agent were fabricated into microneedles (MNs) for transdermal drug delivery applications by integrating the MNs with insulin-loaded patches. It was observed that the mean amount of insulin permeating across neonatal porcine skin in vitro was 20.62% and 52.48% from hydrogel MNs prepared from aqueous blends containing 0 and 5% w/w of NaHCO . We believe that these pore-forming hydrogels are likely to prove extremely useful for applications in transdermal drug delivery of biomolecules. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The efficacious delivery of antigens to antigen-presenting cells (APCs), in particular, to dendritic cells (DCs), and their subsequent activation remains a significant challenge in the development of effective vaccines. This study highlights the potential of dissolving microneedle (MN) arrays laden with nanoencapsulated antigen to increase vaccine immunogenicity by targeting antigen specifically to contiguous DC networks within the skin. Following in situ uptake, skin-resident DCs were able to deliver antigen-encapsulated poly-d,l-lactide-co-glycolide (PGLA) nanoparticles to cutaneous draining lymph nodes where they subsequently induced significant expansion of antigen-specific T cells. Moreover, we show that antigen-encapsulated nanoparticle vaccination via microneedles generated robust antigen-specific cellular immune responses in mice. This approach provided complete protection in vivo against both the development of antigen-expressing B16 melanoma tumors and a murine model of para-influenza, through the activation of antigen-specific cytotoxic CD8(+) T cells that resulted in efficient clearance of tumors and virus, respectively. In addition, we show promising findings that nanoencapsulation facilitates antigen retention into skin layers and provides antigen stability in microneedles. Therefore, the use of biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles for selective targeting of antigen to skin DC subsets through dissolvable MNs provides a promising technology for improved vaccination efficacy, compliance, and coverage.

Co3O4, Fe2O3 and a mixture of the two oxides Co–Fe (molar ratio of Co3O4/Fe2O3 = 0.67 and atomic ratio of Co/Fe = 1) were prepared by the calcination of cobalt oxalate and/or iron oxalate salts at 500 °C for 2 h in static air using water as a solvent/dispersing agent. The catalysts were studied in the steam reforming of ethanol to investigate the effect of the partial substitution of Co3O4 with Fe2O3 on the catalytic behaviour. The reforming activity over Fe2O3, while initially high, underwent fast deactivation. In comparison, over the Co–Fe catalyst both the H2 yield and stability were higher than that found over the pure Co3O4 or Fe2O3 catalysts. DRIFTS-MS studies under the reaction feed highlighted that the Co–Fe catalyst had increased amounts of adsorbed OH/water; similar to Fe2O3. Increasing the amount of reactive species (water/OH species) adsorbed on the Co–Fe catalyst surface is proposed to facilitate the steam reforming reaction rather than decomposition reactions reducing by-product formation and providing a higher H2 yield.

The reaction mechanism of CO and Fe2O3 in a chemical-looping combustion (CLC) was studied based on density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP level in this paper. The structures of all reactants, intermediate, transition structures and products of this reaction had been optimized and characterized. The reaction path was validated by means of the intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) approach. The result showed that the reaction was divided into two steps, the adsorbed CO molecule on Fe 2O3 surface formed a medium state with one broken Fe-O bond in step1, and in step2, O atom broken here oxidized a subsequent CO molecule in the fuel reactor. Thus, Fe2O3 molecule transport O from air to oxide CO continually in the CLC process. The activation energy and rate coefficients of the two steps were also obtained.

The ability to directly utilize hydrocarbons and other renewable liquid fuels is one of the most important issues affecting the large scale deployment of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Herein we designed La0.2Sr0.7TiO3-Ni/YSZ functional gradient anode (FGA) supported SOFCs, prepared with a co-tape casting method and sintered using the field assisted sintering technique (FAST). Through SEM observations, it was confirmed that the FGA structure was achieved and well maintained after the FAST process. Distortion and delamination which usually results after conventional sintering was successfully avoided. The La0.2Sr0.7TiO3-Ni/YSZ FGA supported SOFCs showed a maximum power density of 600mWcm-2 at 750°C, and was stable for 70h in CH4. No carbon deposition was detected using Raman spectroscopy. These results confirm the potential coke resistance of La0.2Sr0.7TiO3-Ni/YSZ FGA supported SOFCs.

A three-dimensional (3D) graphene-Co3O4 electrode was prepared by a two-step method in which graphene was initially deposited on a Ni foam with Co3O4 then grown on the resulting graphene structure. Cross-linked Co3O4 nanosheets with an open pore structure were fully and vertically distributed throughout the graphene skeleton. The free-standing and binder-free monolithic electrode was used directly as a cathode in a Li-O2 battery. This composite structure exhibited enhanced performance with a specific capacity of 2453 mA h g-1 at 0.1 mA cm-2 and 62 stable cycles with 583 mA h g-1 (1000 mA h gcarbon-1). The excellent electrochemical performance is associated with the unique architecture and superior catalytic activity of the 3D electrode.
