Photoionization cross-sections out of the fine-structure levels (2S(2)2p(4) P-3(2,0,1)) of the O-like Fe ion Fe XIX have been reinvestigated. Data for photoionization out of each of these finestructure levels have been obtained, where the calculations have been performed with and without the inclusion of radiation damping on the resonance structure in order to assess the importance of this process. Recombination rate coefficients are determined using the Milne relation, for the case of an electron recombining with N-like Fe ions (Fe XX) in the ground state to form O-like Fe (Fe XIX) existing in each of the fine- structure ground-state levels. Recombination rates are presented over a temperature range similar to 4.0 less than or equal to log T-e less than or equal to 7.0, of importance to the modelling of X-ray emission plasmas.

Objective: Despite evidence that gender may influence neurocognitive functioning, few studies have examined its effects in bipolar disorder (BD) a priori. The aim of this study was to examine how gender influences executive-type functions, which are potentially useful as endophenotypes for BD. Methods: The performance of 26 euthymic patients(12 males, 14 females) with DSM-IV BD (20 BD type I and six BD type II) was compared to that of 26 controls (12 males, 14 females) on tests of executive function. Controls were matched to patients on an individual basis for sex, age and premorbid IQ. Tests assessed spatial working memory (SWM), planning, attentional set-shifting and verbal fluency. Results: Overall, patients showed deficits in SWM strategy (p < 0.001) and made more SWM errors relative to controls (p < 0.001). These deficits were more apparent in male-only comparisons (both p < 0.001) than in female-only comparisons (both p < 0.05). When examined in isolation, male controls were significantly better at performing the SWM task than female controls (both p < 0.05). This pattern was not observed in the patient cohort: male patients had poorer strategy scores than female patients (p < 0.05), but made a similar number of SWM errors. Conclusions: These findings provide evidence that gender can influence the detection of SWM deficits in the euthymic phase of BD, as the sex-related disequilibrium in SWM identified in healthy controls was disrupted in BD. © 2008 The Authors Journal compilation © 2008 Blackwell Munksgaard.

We extend the literature on regime-dependent volatility in two ways. First, our microstructural model provides a qualitatively new explanation. Second, we test implications of our model using Europe's recent shift to rigidly fixed rates (EMS to EMU). In the model, shocks to order flow induce more volatility under flexible rates because the elasticity of speculative demand is (endogenously) low, leading to pronounced portfolio-balance effects. New data on FF/DM transactions show that order flow had persistent effects on the exchange rate before EMU parities were announced. After announcement, the FF/DM rate was decoupled from order flow, as the model predicts.

Pulsed laser deposition was used to make a series of Au/Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST)/SrRuO3/MgO thin film capacitors with dielectric thickness ranging from similar to15 nm to similar to1 mum. Surface grain size of the dielectric was monitored as a function of thickness using both atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Grain size data were considered in conjunction with low field dielectric constant measurements. It was observed that the grain size decreased with decreasing thickness in a manner similar to the dielectric constant. Simple models were developed in which a functionally inferior layer at the grain boundary was considered as responsible for the observed dielectric behavior. If a purely columnar microstructure was assumed, then constant thickness grain-boundary dead layers could indeed reproduce the series capacitor dielectric response observed, even though such layers would contribute electrically in parallel with unaffected bulk- like BST. Best fits indicated that the dead layers would have a relative dielectric constant similar to40, and thickness of the order of tens of nanometers. For microstructures that were not purely columnar, models did not reproduce the observed dielectric behavior well. However, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy indicated columnar microstructure, suggesting that grain boundary dead layers should be considered seriously in the overall dead-layer debate. An extensive experimental program has been carried out on a 135?mm tip diameter radial turbine using a variety of stator designs, in order to facilitate direct performance comparisons of varying stator vane solidity and the effect of varying the vaneless space. A baseline vaned stator was designed using commercial blade design software, having 15 vanes and a vane trailing edge to rotor leading edge radius ratio (Rte/rle) of 1.13. Two additional series of stator vanes were designed and manufactured; one series having varying vane numbers of 12, 18, 24, and 30, and a further series with Rte/rle ratios of 1.05, 1.175, 1.20, and 1.25. As part of the design process a series of CFD simulations were carried out in order to guide design iterations towards achieving a matched flow capacity for each stator. In this way the variations in the measured stage efficiency could be attributed to the stator passages only, thus allowing direct comparisons to be made. Interstage measurements were taken to capture the static pressure distribution at the rotor inlet and these measurements were then used to validate subsequent numerical models. The overall losses for different stators have been quantified and the variations in the measured and computed efficiency were used to recommend optimum values of vane solidity and Rte/rle.

The impact that the transmission-line load-network has on the performance of the recently introduced series-L/parallel-tuned Class-E amplifier and the classic shunt-C/series-tuned configuration when compared to optimally derived lumped load networks is discussed. In addition an improved load topology which facilitates harmonic suppression of up to 5 order as required for maximum Class-E efficiency as well as load resistance transformation and a design procedure involving the use of Kuroda's identity and Richard's transformation enable a distributed synthesis process which dispenses with the need for iterative tuning as previously required in order to achieve optimum Class-E operation. © 2005 IEEE.

Thin lamellae were cut from bulk single crystal BaTiO3 using a Focused Ion Beam Microscope. They were then removed and transferred onto single crystal MgO substrates, so that their functional properties could be measured independent of the original host bulk ferroelectric. The temperature dependence of the capacitance of these isolated single crystal films was found to be strongly bulk-like, demonstrating a sharp Curie anomaly, as well as Curie-Weiss behaviour. In addition, the sudden change in the remanent polarisation as a function of temperature at TC was characteristic of a first order phase change. The work represents a dramatic improvement on that previously published by M. M. Saad, P. Baxter, R. M. Bowman, J. M. Gregg, F. D. Morrison & J. F. Scott, J. Phys: Cond. Matt., 16 L451-L456 (2004), as critical shortcomings in the original specimen geometry, involving potential signal contributions from bulk BaTiO3, have now been obviated. That the functional properties of single crystal thin film lamellae are comparable to bulk, and not like those of conventionally deposited heteroegenous thin film systems, has therefore been confirmed.

The liquid phase selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde to cinnamyl alcohol has been carried out over a graphite-supported iridium catalyst. The effect of reaction parameters such as temperature, pressure, concentration of reactant, the effect of addition of product to the feed and pre-reduction of the catalyst were studied. In situ pre-reduction of the catalyst with hydrogen had a very significant enhancing effect on the conversion of cinnamaldehyde and selectivity of the catalyst to cinnamyl alcohol. Kinetic analysis of the pre-reduced catalyst showed that the reaction is zero order with respect to cinnamaldehyde and first order with respect to hydrogen. The reaction follows an Arrhenius behaviour with an activation energy of 37 kJ mol(-1). Detailed analysis of the reaction showed that hydrogenation of the C=C double bond to give hydrocinnamaldehyde predominantly occurred at low conversions of cinnamaldehyde (

Response time (RT) variability is a common finding in ADHD research. RT variability may reflect frontal cortex function and may be related to deficits in sustained attention. The existence of a sustained attention deficit in ADHD has been debated, largely because of inconsistent evidence of time-on-task effects. A fixed-sequence Sustained Attention to Response Task (SART) was given to 29 control, 39 unimpaired and 24 impaired-ADHD children (impairment defined by the number of commission errors). The response time data were analysed using the Fast Fourier Transform, to define the fast-frequency and slow-frequency contributions to overall response variability. The impaired-ADHD group progressively slowed in RT over the course of the 5.5 min task, as reflected in this group's greater slow-frequency variability. The fast-frequency trial-to-trial variability was also significantly greater, but did not differentially worsen over the course of the task. The higher error rates of the impaired-ADHD group did not become differentially greater over the length of the task. The progressive slowing in mean RT over the course of the task may relate to a deficit in arousal in the impaired-ADHD group. The consistently poor performance in fast-frequency variability and error rates may be due to difficulties in sustained attention that fluctuate on a trial-to-trial basis. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Movement-related potentials (MRPs) reflect increasing cortical activity related to the preparation and execution of voluntary movement. Execution and preparatory components may be separated by comparing MRPs recorded from actual and imagined movement. Imagined movement initiates preparatory processes, but not motor execution activity. MRPs are maximal over the supplementary motor area (SMA), an area of the cortex involved in the planning and preparation of movement. The SMA receives input from the basal ganglia, which are affected in Huntington's disease (HD), a hyperkinetic movement disorder. In order to further elucidate the effects of the disorder upon the cortical activity relating to movement, MRPs were recorded from ten HD patients, and ten age-matched controls, whilst they performed and imagined performing a sequential button-pressing task. HD patients produced MRPs of significantly reduced size both for performed and imagined movement. The component relating to movement execution was obtained by subtracting the MRP for imagined movement from the MRP for performed movement, and was found to be normal in HD. The movement preparation component was found by subtracting the MRP found for a control condition of watching the visual cues from the MRP for imagined movement. This preparation component in HD was reduced in early slope, peak amplitude, and post-peak slope. This study therefore reported abnormal MRPs in HD. particularly in terms of the components relating to movement preparation, and this finding may further explain the movement deficits reported in the disease.

The aim of this paper is to use Markov modelling to
investigate survival for particular types of kidney patients
in relation to their exposure to anti-hypertensive treatment
drugs. In order to monitor kidney function an intuitive three
point assessment is proposed through the collection of blood
samples in relation to Chronic Kidney Disease for Northern
Ireland patients. A five state Markov Model was devised
using specific transition probabilities for males and
females over all age groups. These transition probabilities
were then adjusted appropriately using relative risk scores
for the event death for different subgroups of patients. The
model was built using TreeAge software package in order to
explore the effects of anti-hypertensive drugs on patients.

The number of children diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is rising and is now thought to be as high as 1:100. While the debate about best treatment continues, the effects of having a child diagnosed with ASD on family life remain relatively unexplored. This article, by Karola Dillenburger of Queens University Belfast, Mickey Keenan of the University of Ulster, Alvin Doherty from the Health Service Executive Western Region, Tony Byrne of Parents’ Education as Autism Therapists (PEAT) and Stephen Gallagher of the University of Ulster, sets out to adjust that balance. Drawing upon data from a comprehensive study of parental needs, these authors argue that parental and professional views do not always concur; that families make extraordinary sacrifices; that siblings are affected; and that parents are under tremendous stress. Parents argue that educational and social service supports are not efficient and that they are forced to rely largely on support from within the family or from friends. In particular, some important differences between parental and professional perceptions became apparent in relation to interventions based on Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). The authors of this article propose that these differences need to be taken seriously by teachers and other professionals as well as by policy-makers.

The electrochemical reduction of the disperse azo dyes Red1, Red13 and Orange1 (Or1) was investigated in the RTILs [C(4)mim][NTf2] and [C(4)mpyrr][NTf2], and in contrast with their behavior in conventional aprotic solvents, was shown to proceed via a reversible one electron step to form stable radical anion, which is further reduced at more negative potentials to the dianion. In [C(4)mpyrr][NTf2], cleavage of the N-H bond on the secondary amine was inferred for Orange1, and the ease at which this cleavage occurred is rationalized in terms of acidity of the amine moiety. The ease of reduction was observed to decrease in the order Or1 > Red13 > Red1, and is related to the electron delocalization within the molecule and the electron withdrawing power of the substituents.

Near-infrared (NIR) imaging was used to observe water vapour flow in a gas-solid fluidized bed reactor. The technique consisted of a broadband light, an optical filter with a bandwidth centred on strong water vapour absorptions, a Vidicon NIR camera, a nozzle from which an optically active mixture of gas and water vapour was trans-illuminated by an NIR beam and collected data of transmittance were normalized to actual optical path. The procedure was applied to a thin fluidized bed reactor with a low aspect ratio of tube to particle diameters (D-1/d(p)) in order to validate the wall effect on flow dynamics and mass transfer during the reduction of ceria-silica by hydrogen. High concentrations of water vapour emerged in the vicinity of the wall when the bed was operated at pseudo-static conditions but disappeared when the bed was run at minimum bubbling conditions. This result shows the capability of optical methods with affordable costs to 2D imaging opaque packed bed by using a spatially resolved probe located at the exit, which is of great benefit for in situ visualization of anisotropic concentrations in packed beds under industrially relevant conditions and thus for elucidation of the underlying reaction mechanism and diffusion interactions. Degradation experiments of benzoate by Pseudomonas putida resulted in enzymatic carbon isotope fractionations. However, isotopic temperature effects between experiments at 20 and 30 °C were minor. Averages of the last three values of the CO2 isotopic composition (δ13CCO2(g)) were more negative than the initial benzoate δ13C value (−26.2‰ Vienna Pee Dee Belenite (VPDB)) by 3.8, 3.4 and 3.2‰ at 20, 25 and 30 °C, respectively. Although the maximum isotopic temperature difference found was only 0.6‰, more extreme temperature variations may cause larger isotope effects. In order to understand the isotope effects on the total inorganic carbon (TIC), a better measure is to calculate the proportions of the inorganic carbon species (CO2(g), CO2(aq) and HCO3−) and to determine their cumulative δ13CTIC. In all three experiments δ13CTIC was more positive than the initial isotopic composition of the benzoate at a pH of 7. This suggests an uptake of 12C in the biomass in order to match the carbon balance of these closed system experiments.
