A combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the nature of the active form of gold in oxide-supported gold catalysts for the water gas shift reaction has been performed. In situ extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) experiments have shown that in the fresh catalysts the gold is in the form of highly dispersed gold ions. However, under water gas shift reaction conditions, even at temperatures as low as 100 degrees C, the evidence from EXAFS and XANES is only 14 consistent with rapid, and essentially complete, reduction of the gold to form metallic clusters containing about 50 atoms. The presence of Au-Ce distances in the EXAFS spectra, and the fact that about 15% of the gold atoms can be reoxidized after exposure to air at 150 degrees C, is indicative of a close interaction between a fraction (ca. 15%) of the gold atoms and the oxide support. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are entirely consistent with this model and suggest that an important aspect of the active and stable form of gold under water gas shift reaction conditions is the location of a partially oxidized gold (Audelta+) species at a cerium cation vacancy in the surface of the oxide support. It is found that even with a low loading gold catalysts (0.2%) the fraction of ionic gold under water gas shift conditions is below the limit of detection by XANES (<5%). It is concluded that under water gas shift reaction conditions the active form of gold comprises small metallic gold clusters in intimate contact with the oxide support.

A series of bimetallic Ru-containing monometallic and bimetallic catalysts were prepared and tested for their activity for the hydrogenation of 2-butanone to 2-butanol at 30 °C and 3 bar H2. RuPt bimetallic catalysts were the most active for the reaction, with a ratio of 5 wt% Ru:1 wt% Pt on activated carbon (AC) found to be optimum. The activity of this bimetallic catalyst was more than double that of the sum of the activities of the monometallic Ru and Pt catalysts, providing evidence of a “bimetallic” effect. Structural analysis of the bimetallic catalysts revealed that they consisted of clusters of particles of the order of 1–2 nm. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis showed that there were two types of particle on the surface of the bimetallic RuPt catalyst, specifically monometallic Ru and bimetallic RuPt particles. For the bimetallic particles, it was possible to fit the data with a model in which a Ru core of 1.1 nm is enclosed by two Pt-rich layers, the outer layer containing only 13 at% Ru. Pretreatment of the monometallic and bimetallic catalysts in hydrogen had a significant effect on the activity. Both the bimetallic and monometallic Ru-based catalysts showed a trend of decreasing activity with increasing temperature of prereduction in hydrogen. This loss of activity was almost fully reversible by exposure of the catalysts to air after reduction. The changing activity with exposure to different gas phase environments could not be attributed to changes in particle size or surface composition. It is proposed that the introduction of hydrogen results in a gradual smoothing of the surface and loss of defect sites; this process being reversible on introduction of air. These defect sites are particularly important for the dissociative adsorption of hydrogen, potentially the rate-determining step in this reaction.

Ruthenium, rhodium, and iridium piano stool complexes of the pentafluorophenyl-substituted diphosphine (C6F5)2PCH2P(C6F5)2 (2) have been prepared and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The Cp-P tethered complex [{(C5Me4CH2C6F4(C6F5)CH2P(C6F5)2}RhCl2] (9), in which only one phosphorus is coordinated to the rhodium, was prepared by thermolysis of a slurry of [Cp*RhCl(-Cl)]2 and 2 and was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The tethering occurs by intramolecular dehydrofluorinative coupling of the pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligand and P,P-coordinated 2. The geometric changes that occur on tethering force dissociation of one of the phosphorus atoms. The effects of introducing phosphine ligands to the coordination sphere of piano stool hydrogen transfer catalysts have been studied. The complexes of fluorinated phosphine complexes are found to transfer hydrogen at rates that compare favorably with leading catalysts, particularly when the phosphine and cyclopentadienyl functionalities are tethered. The highly chelating Cp-PP complex [(C5Me4CH2-2-C5F3N-4-PPhCH2CH2PPh2)RhCl]BF4 (1) was found to outperform all other complexes tested. The mechanism of hydrogen transfer catalyzed by piano stool phosphine complexes is discussed with reference to the trends in activity observed.

Research is progressing fast in the field of the hydrogen assisted hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction (HC-SCR) over Ag-based catalysts: this paper is a review of the work to date in this area. The addition of hydrogen to the HC-SCR reaction feed over Ag/Al2O3 results in a remarkable improvement in NO (x) conversion using a variety of different hydrocarbon feeds. There is some debate concerning the role that hydrogen has to play in the reaction mechanism and its effect on the form of Ag present during the reaction. Many of the studies use in situ UV-Vis spectroscopy to monitor the form of Ag in the catalyst and appear to indicate that the addition of hydrogen promotes the formation of small Ag clusters which are highly reactive for NO (x) conversion. However, some authors have expressed concern about the use of this technique for these materials and further work is required to address these issues before this technique can be used to give an accurate assessment of the state of Ag during the SCR reaction. A study using in situ EXAFS to probe the H-2 assisted octane-SCR reaction has shown that small Ag particles (containing on average 3 silver atoms) are formed during the SCR reaction but that the addition of H-2 to the feed does not result in any further change in the Ag particle size. This points to the direct involvement of H-2 in the reaction mechanism. Clearly the addition of hydrogen results in a large increase in the number and variety of adsorbed species on the surface of the catalyst during the reaction. Some authors have suggested that conversion of cyanide to isocyanate is the rate-determining step and that hydrogen promotes this conversion. Others have suggested that hydrogen reduces nitrates to more reactive nitrite species which can then activate the hydrocarbon; activation of the hydrocarbon to form acetates has been proposed as the key step. It is probable that all these promotional effects can take place and that it very much depends on the reaction temperature and feed conditions as to which one is most important.

For the first time, the coupling of fast transient kinetic switching and the use of an isotopically labelled reactant (15NO) has allowed detailed analysis of the evolution of all the products and reactants involved in the regeneration of a NOx storage reduction (NSR) material. Using realistic regeneration times (ca. 1 s) for Pt, Rh and Pt/Rh-containing Ba/Al2O3 catalysts we have revealed an unexpected double peak in the evolution of nitrogen. The first peak occurred immediately on switching from lean to rich conditions, while the second peak started at the point at which the gases switched from rich to lean. The first evolution of nitrogen occurs as a result of the fast reaction between H2 and/or CO and NO on reduced Rh and/or Pt sites. The second N2 peak which occurs upon removal of the rich phase can be explained by reaction of stored ammonia with stored NOx, gas phase NOx or O2. The ammonia can be formed either by hydrolysis of isocyanates or by direct reaction of NO and H2.

The study highlights the importance of the relative rates of regeneration and storage in determining the overall performance of the catalysts. The performance of the monometallic 1.1%Rh/Ba/Al2O3 catalyst at 250 and 350 °C was found to be dependent on the rate of NOx storage, since the rate of regeneration was sufficient to remove the NOx stored in the lean phase. In contrast, for the monometallic 1.6%Pt/Ba/Al2O3 catalyst at 250 °C, the rate of regeneration was the determining factor with the result that the amount of NOx stored on the catalyst deteriorated from cycle to cycle until the amount of NOx stored in the lean phase matched the NOx reduced in the rich phase. On the basis of the ratio of exposed metal surface atoms to total Ba content, the monometallic 1.6%Pt/Ba/Al2O3 catalyst outperformed the Rh-containing catalysts at 250 and 350 °C even when CO was used as a reductant.

Catalysts based on molybdena (MoO3) reduced at mild temperatures are highly active and selective for the hydroisomerization of alkanes: however, further catalyst development has been hampered by the structural complexity of the material and the controversy regarding the nature of the active phase. The present work is aimed at determining the relationship between the content of carbon present in an oxycarbide phase and the activity for n-butane hydroisomerization. A series of temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO) and temporal analysis of product (TAP) data showed that the oxycarbidic carbon content is not related to the activity of the sample for the isomerization of n-butane to isobutane. The formation of a carbon-containing phase is, therefore, not crucial to obtain an active catalyst. This study also highlights the capability of the multi-pulse TAP technique to investigate structure-activity relationships over materials with readily variable atomic composition. The mechanism of the hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis of dinitrodiphenyldisulfides using sulfided NiMo/ gamma Al2O3 catalysts has been examined in detail. Although two routes are possible, the major pathway involves an initial S-S bond cleavage followed by reduction of the nitro group. Importantly, the disulfide hydrogenolysis occurs in the absence of the catalyst with the role of the catalyst thought to be to activate the hydrogen and trap the cleaved intermediate as well as facilitate the reduction of the nitro group. Monitoring the mass balance throughout the reaction demonstrates the difficulty in measuring intrinsic kinetics for gas-liquid-solid reactions. Although the mass balance is restored at the end of the reaction, up to 45% of the substrate/products is found to be adsorbed on the catalyst during the reaction. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. The present work emphasizes the importance of including a full quantitative analysis when in situ operando methods are used to investigate reaction mechanisms and reaction intermediates. The fact that some surface species exchange at a similar rate to the reaction product during isotopic transients is a necessary but not sufficient criterion for participation as a key reaction intermediate. This is exemplified here in the case of highly active low-temperature water-gas shift (WGS) catalysts based on gold and platinum. Operando DRIFTS data, isotopic exchanges, and DRIFTS calibration curves relating the concentration of formate species to the corresponding DRIFTS band intensity were combined to obtain a quantitative measure of the specific rate of formate decomposition. Despite displaying a rapid isotopic exchange rate (sometimes as fast as that of the reaction product CO2), the concentration of formates seen by DRIFTS was found to account for at most only 10% of the CO2 produced under the experimental conditions reported herein. These new results obtained on Au/CeZrO4 and Pt/CeO2 preparations (which are among the most active low-temperature WGS catalysts reported to date), led to the same conclusions regarding the minor role of IR-observable formates as those obtained in the case of less active Au/Ce(La)O-2 and Pt/ZrO2 catalysts. Imidazolium-tagged bis(oxazolines) have been prepared and used as chiral ligands in the copper(II)-catalysed Diels-Alder reaction of N-acryloyl- and N-crotonoyloxazolidinones with cyclopentadiene and 1,3-cyclohexadiene in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide, [emim][NTf2]. A significant and substantial enhancement in the rate and enantioselectivity was achieved in [emim][NTf2] compared with dichloromethane. For example, complete conversion and enantioselectivities up to 95 % were obtained for the reaction between N-acryloyloxazolidinone and cyclopentadiene within 2 min in [emim][NTf2] whereas the corresponding reaction in dichloromethane required 60 min to reach completion and gave an ee of only 16 %. The enhanced rates obtained in the ionic liquid enabled a catalyst loading as low as 0.5 mol % to give complete conversion within 2 min while retaining the same level of enantioselectivity. The imidazolium-tagged catalysts can be recycled ten times without any loss in activity or enantioselectivity and showed much higher affinity for the ionic liquid phase during the recycle procedure than the analogous uncharged ligand.

Enantiopure Lewis acid complexes of conformationally flexible acyclic and monocyclic NUPHOS diphosphines, delta- and lambda-[(NUPHOS)Pt(OTf)(2)], are efficient catalysts for the carbonyl-ene reaction between various unsymmetrical 1,1'-disubstituted alkenes and phenylglyoxal or ethyl glyoxylate. While catalyst performance was substrate dependent, ee values as high as 95% and yields up to 90% have been obtained. In a number of cases catalysts generated from delta- and lambda-[(NUPHOS)Pt{(S)-BINOL}] showed marked enhancements in enantioselectivity in ionic liquids compared with organic media. Although an enhancement in enantioselectivity was not obtained for all substrate combinations in such cases, the enantioselectivities were comparable to those obtained in dichloromethane. Furthermore, although the ee's are initially comparable in both the ionic liquid and dichloromethane, a gradual erosion of ee with time was found in the organic solvent, whereas the ee remained constant in the ionic liquid. Preliminary kinetic investigations suggest that the decrease in ee may be due to a faster racemization of the catalyst in dichloromethane compared with the ionic liquid.

Sulfoxidation reactions of 4,6-dimethyl-2-methylthiopyrimidine have been performed using titanosilicate catalysts in ionic liquids, dioxane and ethanol. The ionic liquid reactions showed superior reactivity compared with molecular solvents. Moreover, on examination of the recycling of the catalyst, a significant increase in the stability of catalyst was found both in terms of recycling activity and leaching of the titanium from the catalyst. The mechanism by which the ionic liquid reduces the solubilisation of the catalysts is explored.

The Heck arylation of 2-methylprop-2-en- I -ol in ionic liquids and organic solvents is reported using a range of homogeneous and heterogeneous palladium catalysts. Higher activity is observed in the ionic liquid media compared with N-methyl pyrrolidinone and under solventless conditions. The ionic liquid-catalyst system may be recycled easily with little loss in activity, although significant palladium leaching from the heterogeneous catalyst was observed. In the case of Trans-bis(2,3-dihydro-3-methylbenzothiazole-2-ylidene)diiodopalladium (11) reported to be highly active for this transformation, significant induction petiods were observed indicating that nanoparticles may be responsible for the catalysis. Using the ionic liquid Heck reaction, a recyclable synthesis for the fragrance beta-Lilial((R)) has been developed. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Several novel phosphoramidites have been prepared by reaction of the primary amines para-vinylaniline, ortho-anisidine, 2-methoxyphenyl(4-vinylbenzyl)amine, 8-aminoquinoline and 3-vinyl-8-aminoquinoline with (S)-1,1'-bi-2-naphthylchlorophosphite, in the presence of base. Rhodium(l) complexes of these phosphoramidites catalyse the asymmetric hydrogenation of dimethylitaconate and dehydroamino acids and esters giving ee values up to 95%. Soluble non-cross linked polymers of the para-vinylaniline and 3-vinyl-8-aminoquinoline-based phosphoramidites have been prepared by free radical co-polymerisation with styrene in the presence of AIBN as initiator. The corresponding [Rh(COD)](+) complexes serve as recyclable catalysts for the asymmetric hydrogenation dimethylitaconate and dehydroamino acids and esters to give ee values up to 80%. In chloroform, [RuCl2(nbd)(py)(2)] (1) (nbd = norbornadiene; py = pyridine) reacts with 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,2,3,4-tetramethyl-1,3-butadiene (1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS) to give the dimer [Ru2Cl3(eta(4)-1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(2)]Cl (2a), whereas, in THF [RuCl2(1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(PY)(2)] (3) is isolated as the sole product of reaction. Compound 2 exists as a 4:1 mixture of two noninterconverting isomers, the major with C, symmetry and the minor with either C, or C-2 symmetry. A single-crystal X-ray analysis of [Ru2Cl3 (eta(4)-1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(2)] [SbF6] (2b), the hexafluoroantimonate salt of 2a, revealed that the diphosphine coordinates in an unusual manner, as a eta(4)-six-electron donor, bonded through both P atoms and one of the double bonds of the butadiene tether. Compounds 2a and 3 react with 1,2-ethylenediamine (en) in THF to afford [RuCl2(1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(en)] (4), which rapidly dissociates a chloride ligand in chloroform to give [RuCl(eta(4)-1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(en)] [Cl] (5a). Complexes 4 and 5a cleanly and quantitatively interconvert in a solvent-dependent equilibrium, and in THF 5a readily adds chloride to displace the eta(2)-interaction and re-form 4. A single-crystal X-ray structure determination of [RuCl(eta(4)-1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(en)][ClO4] (5b) confirmed that the diphosphine coordinates in an eta(4)-manner as a facial six-electron donor with the eta(2)-coordinated double bond occupying the site trans to chloride. The eta(4)-bonding mode can be readily identified by the unusually high-field chemical shift associated with the phosphorus atom adjacent to the eta(2)-coordinated double bond. Complexes 2a, 2b, 4, and 5a form catalysts that are active for transfer hydrogenation of a range of ketones. In all cases, catalysts formed from precursors 2a and 2b are markedly more active than those formed from 4 and 5a.

Gold-based catalysts have been of intense interests in recent years, being regarded as a new generation of catalysts due to their unusually high catalytic performance. For example, CO oxidation on Au/TiO2 has been found to occur at a temperature as low as 200 K. Despite extensive studies in the field, the microscopic mechanism of CO oxidation on Au-based catalysts remains controversial. Aiming to provide insight into the catalytic roles of Au, we have performed extensive density functional theory calculations for the elementary steps in CO oxidation on Au surfaces. O atom adsorption, CO adsorption, O-2 dissociation, and CO oxidation on a series of Au surfaces, including flat surfaces, defects and small clusters, have been investigated in detail. Many transition states involved are located, and the lowest energy pathways are determined. We find the following: (i) the most stable site for O atom on Au is the bridge site of step edge, not a kink site; (ii) O-2 dissociation on Au (O-2-->20(ad)) is hindered by high barriers with the lowest barrier being 0.93 eV on a step edge; (iii) CO can react with atomic O with a substantially lower barrier, 0.25 eV, on Au steps where CO can adsorb; (iv) CO can react with molecular O-2 on Au steps with a low barrier of 0.46 eV, which features an unsymmetrical four-center intermediate state (O-O-CO); and (v) O-2 can adsorb on the interface of Au/TiO2 with a reasonable chemisorption energy. On the basis of our calculations, we suggest that (i) O-2 dissociation on Au surfaces including particles cannot occur at low temperatures; (ii) CO oxidation on Au/inactive-materials occurs on Au steps via a two-step mechanism: CO+O-2-->CO2+O, and CO+O-->CO2; and (iii) CO oxidation on Au/active-materials also follows the two-step mechanism with reactions occurring at the interface.
