A coherent superposition of rotational states in D2 has been excited by nonresonant, ultrafast (12 fs), intense (2×1014 W cm-2) 800 nm laser pulses, leading to impulsive dynamic alignment. Field-free evolution of this rotational wave packet has been mapped to high temporal resolution by a time-delayed pulse, initiating rapid double ionization, which is highly sensitive to the angle of orientation of the molecular axis with respect to the polarization direction, . The detailed fractional revivals of the neutral D2 wave packet as a function of and evolution time have been observed and modeled theoretically.

Aromatic monomers can be polymerised using the chloroaluminate room temperature melt obtained by mixing 1:2 ratio of cetyl pyridinium chloride and anhydrous aluminium chloride miscible in all proportions with organic solvents as an electrolyte. The chloroaluminate (AlCl4-) anion generated in this melt having a tetrahedral symmetry with equal bond lengths and bond angles is the dopant to stabilize macrocation generated near the vicinity of anode to yield better conducting and better ordered electronically conducting free standing polymer film. In this communication, we discuss the polymers derived from benzene and pyrrole and their characterization by various techniques.

Conducting polymers suffer from folds and kinks because of random nucleation and solvation of a free radical cation to yield a cross linked/disordered polymer and therefore a solvent free electrochemical polymerization in a room temperature melt medium is adopted to yield a high degree polymer with high electronic conductivity. Electropolymerization of thiophene was performed on platinum/ITO substrates using cyclic voltametry or galvenostatic mode in chloroaluminate room temperature melt medium to obtain a reddish brown free standing film which can be peeled off from the electrode surface after a minimum of 10 cycles. The conductivity was found to be around 102 S/cm. The degree of polymerization was calculated to be around 44 from IR studies. A layered structure supportive for high degree of polymerization was witnessed from potential step technique. From UV spectra the charge carriers were found to be bipolarons. The morphology of the film was found to be crystalline from SEM and XRD studies. Capacitative impedance properties for doped samples were interpreted from impedance spectroscopy.

Freestanding polyparaphenylene films were obtained on polymerization of benzene at potential of 1.2 V versus Al wire on substrates like platinum/transparent conducting glass as an anode. The electrolyte used was chloroaluminate room-temperature melt, which was prepared by intimate mixing of a 1:2 ratio of cetyl pyridinium chloride and anhydrous aluminum chloride to yield a viscous liquid. This liquid was miscible in all proportions with benzene and other aromatic hydrocarbons in all proportions at room temperature. The polyparaphenylene films deposited on platinum anode exhibited a prominent cyclic voltammetric peak at 0.7 V versus Al wire as reference electrode in chloroaluminate medium. The impedance spectra gave low charge transfer resistance. The diffused reflectance electronic spectra of the film gave the peaks at 386 nm and 886 nm. The PPP films showed electronic conductivity around 3–4 × 104 S/cm by four probe method under nitrogen atmosphere. The polymer was also characterized by IR spectra, thermal studies, and SEM studies.

A bluish-black shining free standing polypyrrole film (PPy) of electronic conductivity 130 S cm-1 has been prepared by electrochemical oxidative polymerization of pyrrole on Pt/transparent glass conducting electrode resistance 15 O cm-1, using a room temperature melt as an electrolyte, composed of 1:3 stoichiometric ratio of cetyl pyridinium chloride and anhydrous aluminum chloride at 0.58 V versus Al wire as a reference electrode. The film possessed a charge transfer resistance of 132 O, and showed two absorption peaks at 457 and 1264 nm in the UV-vis–NIR diffused reflectance spectra. The morphology of the film was hexagonal. The potential step technique suggested a layered structure. This thin film can easily be peeled off from the electrode surface after three cycles and can be used for various applications like dissipation of electrostatic charge, battery electrode materials, solid electrolytic capacitor, electrochromic windows and displays, microactuators etc. It was also characterized by IR, thermal and SEM studies.

A comparative study of models used to predict contaminant dispersion in a partially stratified room is presented. The experiments were carried out in a ventilated test room, with an initially evenly dispersed pollutant. Air was extracted from the outlet in the ceiling of the room at 1 and 3 air changes per hour. A small temperature difference between the top and bottom of the room causes very low air velocities, and higher concentrations, in the lower half of the room. Grid-independent CFD calculations were compared with predictions from a zonal model and from CFD using a very coarse grid. All the calculations show broadly similar contaminant concentration decay rates for the three locations monitored in the experiments, with the zonal model performing surprisingly well. For the lower air change rate, the models predict a less well mixed contaminant distribution than the experimental measurements suggest. With run times of less than a few minutes, the zonal model is around two orders of magnitude faster than coarse-grid CFD and could therefore be used more easily in parametric studies and sensitivity analyses. For a more detailed picture of internal dispersion, a CFD study using coarse and standard grids may be more appropriate.

Non-ideal behaviour of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [bmim][PF6] in ethylene glycol monomethyl ether; CH3OCH2CH2OH (EGMME), ethylene glycol dimethyl ether; CH3OCH2CH2OCH3 (EGDME) and diethylene glycol dimethyl ether; CH3(OCH2CH2)2OCH3 (DEGDME) have been investigated over the whole composition range at T = (298.15 to 318.15) K. To gain insight into the mixing behaviour, results of density measurements were used to estimate excess molar volumes, image, apparent molar volumes, Vphi,i, partial molar volumes, image, excess partial molar volumes, image, and their limiting values at infinite dilution, image, image, and image, respectively. Volumetric results have been analyzed in the light of Prigogine–Flory–Patterson (PFP) statistical mechanical theory. Measurements of refractive indices n were also performed for all the binary mixtures over whole composition range at T = 298.15 K. Deviations in refractive indices ?phin and the deviation of molar refraction ?xR have been calculated from experimental data. Refractive indices results have been correlated with volumetric results and have been interpreted in terms of molecular interactions. Excess properties are fitted to the Redlich–Kister polynomial equation to obtain the binary coefficients and the standard errors.

This paper introduces a fast algorithm for moving window principal component analysis (MWPCA) which will adapt a principal component model. This incorporates the concept of recursive adaptation within a moving window to (i) adapt the mean and variance of the process variables, (ii) adapt the correlation matrix, and (iii) adjust the PCA model by recomputing the decomposition. This paper shows that the new algorithm is computationally faster than conventional moving window techniques, if the window size exceeds 3 times the number of variables, and is not affected by the window size. A further contribution is the introduction of an N-step-ahead horizon into the process monitoring. This implies that the PCA model, identified N-steps earlier, is used to analyze the current observation. For monitoring complex chemical systems, this work shows that the use of the horizon improves the ability to detect slowly developing drifts.

Using cyclic voltammetry, the electrochemical reduction of benzoic acid (BZA) has been studied at Pt and Au microelectrodes (10 and 2 mu m diameter) in six room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), namely [C(2)mim][NTf2], [C(4)mim][NTf2], [C(4)mpyrr][NTf2], [C(4)mim][BF4], [C(4)mim][NO3], and [C(4)mim][PF6] (where [C(n)mim](+) = 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium, [NTf2](-) = bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [C(4)mpyrr](+) = N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium, [BF4](-) = tetrafluoroborate, [NO3](-) = nitrate, and [PF6](-) = hexafluorophosphate). In all cases, a main reduction peak was observed, assigned to the reduction of BZA in a CE mechanism, where dissociation of the acid takes place before electron transfer to the dissociated proton. One anodic peak was observed on the reverse sweep, assigned to the oxidation of adsorbed hydrogen, and a reductive

The extraction of electrode kinetic parameters for electrochemical couples in room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) is currently an area of considerable interest. Electrochemists typically measure electrode kinetics in the limits of either transient planar or steady-state convergent diffusion for which the voltammetic response is well understood. In this paper we develop a general method allowing the extraction of this kinetic data in the region where the diffusion is intermediate between the planar and convergent limits, such as is often encountered in RTILs using microelectrode voltammetry. A general working surface is derived, allowing the inference of Butler-Volmer standard electrochemical rate constants for the peak-to-peak potential separation in a cyclic voltammogram as a function of voltage scan rate. The method is applied to the case of the ferrocene/ferrocenium couple in [C(2)mim][N(Tf)(2)] and [C(4)mim][N(Tf)(2)].

The oxidation of hydrogen was studied at an activated platinum micro-electrode by cyclic voltammetry in the following ionic liquids: [C(2)mim][NTf2], [C(4)mim][NTf2], [N-6.2.2.2][NTf2], [P-14.6.6.6][NTf2], [C(4)mim][OTf], [C(4)mim][BF4] [C(4)mim][PF6], [C(4)mim][NO3], [C(6)mim]Cl and [C(6)mim][FAP] (where [C(n)mim](+) = 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium, [N-6,N-2,N-2,N-2](+) = n-hexyltriethylammonium, [P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6](+) = tris(n-hexyltetradecyl) phosphonium, [NTf2](-) = bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide, [OTf] = trifluoromethlysulfonate and [FAP](-) = tris(perfluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate). Activation of the Pt electrode was necessary to obtain reliable and reproducible voltammetry. After activation of the electrode, the H-2 oxidation waves were nearly electrochemically and chemically reversible in [C(n)mim][NTf2] ionic liquids, chemically irreversible in [C(6)mim]Cl and [C(4)mim][NO3], and showed intermediate characteristics in OTf-, [BF4](-), [PF6](-), [FAP](-) and other [NTf2](-)-based ionic liquids. These differences reflect the contrasting interactions of protons with the respective RTIL anions. The oxidation peaks are reported relative to the half-wave potential of the cobaltocenium/cobaltocene redox couple in all ionic liquids studied, giving an indication of the relative proton interactions of each ionic liquid. A preliminary temperature study (ca. 298-333 K) has also been carried out in some of the ionic liquids. Diffusion coefficients and solubilities of hydrogen at 298 K were obtained from potential-step chronoamperometry, and there was no relationship found between the diffusion coefficients and solvent viscosity. RTILs possessing [NTf2](-) and [FAP](-) anions showed the highest micro-electrode peak currents for the oxidation in H-2 saturated solutions, with[C(4)mim][NTf2] toeing the most sensitive. The large number of available RTIL anion/cation pairs allows scope for the possible electrochemical detection of hydrogen gas for use in gas sensor technology. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V.
