The dual template synthesis of zeolite SSZ-13 by use of trimethyl-adamantanammonium hydroxide and a diquaternary-ammonium mesoporogen induces considerable mesoporosity without impeding zeolite microporosity. The strongly improved accessibility of Bronsted sites in mesoporous SSZ-13 increases its stability during application as an acid catalyst in the methanol-to-olefins reaction.

Hierarchical SSZ-13 zeolites were synthesized by combining N,N,N-trimethyl-1-adamantanammonium hydroxide (TMAdOH) as the structure-directing agent for chabazite formation with mono- and diquaternary ammonium-type and organosilane mesoporogens and extensively characterized for their structural, textural, and catalytic properties. Mesoporous SSZ-13 zeolites can be synthesized in one step by combining TMAdOH and the diquaternary ammonium-type surfactant C22-4-4Br2. The mesopore volume increases with the mesoporogen/SDA ratio. The hierarchical zeolites are highly crystalline and exhibit similar Brønsted acidity as SSZ-13. Hierarchical SSZ-13 zeolites display increased lifetime in packed-bed MTO experiments than conventional SSZ-13 at similar light olefins yield. The increased lifetime is due to better utilization of the micropore space. With increasing mesoporosity, the micropore space is used more efficiently, but also the rate of coke formation at the crystal periphery increases. Accordingly, the most stable zeolite is obtained at a relatively low C22-4-4Br2/SDA ratio. These zeolite catalysts can be regenerated without substantial loss of activity.

A Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 commercial catalyst for methanol synthesis from syngas was investigated under operational conditions. HERFD XAS and EXAFS data were recorded under different reaction gas mixtures, temperatures, and pressures. Activation of the catalyst precursor occurred via a Cu+ intermediate. The active catalyst predominantly consists of metallic Cu and ZnO. Methanol production only starts when all accessible Cu is reduced. The structure of the active catalyst did not change with temperature or pressure even though the methanol yield changed strongly. Formation of a carbon-containing layer on top of the catalyst surface was detected by TPD, which was correlated with a several-hour induction period in the methanol production after the catalyst reduction.

Over the last two decades, ionic liquids have gained importance as alternative solvents to conventional VOCs in the field of homogeneous catalysis. This success is not only due to their ability to dissolve a large amount of metal catalysts, but it is also due to their potential to enhance yields of enantiopure products. The art of preparation of a specific enantiomer is a highly desired one and searched for in pharmaceutical industry. This work presents a study on solubility in water and in water/methanol mixture of a set of ILs composed of the bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide anion and of the N-alkyl-triethyl-ammonium cation (abbrev. [NR,222][NTf2]) with the alkyl chain R ranging from 6 to 12 carbons. Mutual solubilities between ILs and water, as well as between ILs and methanol/water mixture were investigated in detail. These solubilities were measured using two well-known and accurate experimental techniques based on a volumetric and a cloud-point methods. Both methods enabled us to measure the Tx diagrams reflecting the mutual solubilities between water (or water/methanol) and selected ILs in the temperature range from 293.15 to 338.15 K. The data were fitted by using the modified Flory-Huggins equation proposed by de Sousa and Rebelo and compared also with the prediction carried out by the Cosmo-RS methodology

Novel electrode structures for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) based on Ti mesh are reported. A new anode with a hydrophilic structure prepared by coating Pt-Ru catalyst on Ti mesh using thermal decomposition showed a performance comparable to that of the conventional porous carbon-based structure one in DMFC, whilst a cathode with the same structure showed a poor performance. When a porous structure based on Ti mesh pre-coated with carbon was used as the cathode structure, the performance increased significantly to reach that of conventional carbon paper-based cathode. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. A novel tubular cell structure for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is proposed based on a tubular Ti mesh and a Ti mesh anode. A dip coating method has been developed to fabricate the cell. The characterization of the tubular MEA has been analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), half cell and single cell testing. The tubular DMFC single cell comprises: a Ti mesh, a cathode diffusion layer and catalyst layer, a Nafion recast membrane and a PtRuO/Ti anode. Half cell tests show that the optimum catalyst loading, Ru/(Ru + Pt) atomic ratio and the Nafion loading of a PtRuO/Ti mesh anode are: 4 mg cm, 38% and 0.6 mg cm, respectively. Single cell tests show that the Nafion loading of the recast Nafion membrane and the concentration of the methanol in the electrolyte have a major influence on cell performance. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. The activities of different types of PtRu catalysts for methanol oxidation are compared. Materials used were: UHV-cleaned PtRu alloys, UHV-evaporated Ru onto Pt(111) as well as adsorbed Ru on Pt(111) prepared with and without additional reduction by hydrogen. Differences in the catalytic activity are observed to depend on the preparation procedure of the catalysts. The dependence of the respective catalytic activities upon the surface composition is reported. UHV-STM data for Pt(111)/Ru show the formation of two- and three-dimensional structures depending on surface coverage. A molecular insight on the electrochemical reaction is given via in situ infrared spectroscopy. Analysis of the data indicates that the most probable rate-determining step is the reaction of adsorbed CO with Ru oxide.

A real-time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIRS) analysis of the products of methanol oxidation in a prototype direct-methanol fuel cell operating at high temperatures (150 to 185°C) is reported here. The methanol oxidation products on platinum black and platinum-ruthenium catalyst surfaces were determined as a function of the fuel cell operating temperature, current density, and methanol/water mole ratio. Neither formaldehyde nor formic acid was detected in anode exhaust gas at all cell operating conditions. The product distributions of methanol oxidation obtained by on-line FTIRS are consistent with our previous results obtained by on-line mass spectroscopy under similar conditions. With pure methanol in anode feed, methanaldimethylacetal was found to be the main product, methyl formate and CO were also found. However, when water was present in the anode feed, the main product was CO , and the formation of methanaldimethylacetal and methyl formate decreased significantly with increase of the water/methanol mole ratio. Increase of cell operating temperature enhanced the formation of CO and decreased the formation of methanaldimethylacetal and methyl formate. Pt/Ru catalyst is more active for methanol oxidation and has a higher selectivity toward CO formation than Pt-black. Nearly complete methanol oxidation, i.e., the product was almost exclusively CO , was achieved using a Pt/Ru catalyst and a water/methanol mole ratio of 2 or higher in the anode feed at a temperature of 185°C or above.

PtRuO/Ti anodes with a varying Pt:Ru ratio were prepared by thermal deposition of a PtRuO catalyst layer onto a Ti mesh for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The morphology and structure of the catalyst layers were analyzed by SEM, EDX, and XRD. The catalyst coating layers became porous with increase of the Ru content, and showed oxide and alloy characteristics. The relative activities of the PtRuO/Ti electrodes were assessed and compared using half-cell tests and single DMFC experiments. The results showed that these electrodes were very active for the methanol oxidation and that the optimum Ru surface coverage was ca. 38% for a DMFC operating at 20-60 °C. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. PtRu/Ti anodes with varying Pt : Ru ratio were prepared by electrodeposition of a thin PtRu catalyst layer onto Ti mesh for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The morphology and structure of the catalyst layers were analyzed by SEM, EDX and XRD. The catalyst coating layer shows an alloy character. The relative activities of the PtRu/Ti electrodes were assessed and compared in half cell and single DMFC experiments. The results show that these electrodes are very active for the methanol oxidation and that the optimum Ru surface coverage was ca. 9 at.% for DMFC operating at 20°C and 11 at.% at 60°C. The PtRu/Ti anode shows a performance comparable to that of the conventional carbon-based anode in a DMFC operating with 0.25 M or 0.5 M methanol solution and atmosphere oxygen gas at 90°C. © the Owner Societies 2006.

A novel anode structure based on Ti mesh for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) has been prepared by thermal deposition of ~5 µm PtRuO2 catalyst layer on ~50 µm Ti mesh. The preparation procedures and the main characteristics of the anode were studied by half-cell testing, scanning electron microscopy analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray measurement, and single-cell testing. The optimum calcination temperature is 450°C, calcination time is 90- 120 min, PtRuO2 catalyst loading is 5.0 mg cm-2, Pt precursor concentration range of solution is 0.14- 0.4 M, and solution aging time is 1 day. The performances of the anodes prepared using the solution kept within 20 days showed no significant difference. When it was used in DMFC feed with low-concentration methanol solution at 90°C, this new anode shows better performance than that of the conventional anode, because its thin hydrophilic structure is a benefit to the transport of methanol and carbon dioxide. However, due to its opening structure, when higher concentration methanol was employed, the performance of the cell with new anode became worse. © 2006 The Electrochemical Society. An anode structure based on Ti mesh has been developed for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). This new anode was prepared by electrochemical deposition of a ~ 3 µ m PtRu catalyst layer on ~ 50 µ m Ti mesh. It has a thinner structure compared to that of a porous carbon-based conventional anode. The Ti mesh anode shows a performance comparable to, and exceeding that, of the conventional anode in a DMFC operating with 0.25 or 0.5 M methanol solution and atmosphere oxygen at 90 C. However, it shows a lower performance of the cell when higher concentrations of methanol was employed. This may be attributed to its thin and open structure, which could facilitate the transport of methanol from the flow field to the anode catalyst layer and carbon dioxide in the opposite direction. © 2006 International Association for Hydrogen Energy.

The electro-oxidations of methanol and formic acid at a Ru(0001) electrode in perchloric acid solution have been investigated as functions of temperature, potential and time using in-situ FTIR spectroscopy, and the results compared to those obtained during our previous studies on the adsorption and electro-oxidation of CO under the same conditions. It was found that no dissociative adsorption or electro-oxidation of methanol takes place at the Ru(0001) at potentials 1000 mV, the oxidation of formic acid to CO was significantly increased, and the oxidation of methanol to CO and methyl formate was observed, both of which were attributed to the formation of an active RuO phase on the Ru(0001) surface.

It is essential to correctly determine the nature of the initial adsorbate in order to calculate the pathway for any given reaction. Recent literature provides conflicting information on the first step in the methanol decomposition pathway. This work sets out to establish what role the solution and the surface have to play in the initial adsorption-deprotonation process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, in combination with a cluster-continuum model approach are used to resolve the nature of the adsorbing species. We show that methanol is the dominant species in solution over methoxide, and also has a smaller barrier to adsorption. The nature of the surface species is revealed to be a methanol-OH complex.

In this study, low loading platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) have been highly dispersed on reduced graphene oxide-supported WC nanocrystallites (Pt-WC/RGO) via program-controlled reduction-carburization technique and microwave-assisted method. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy results show that WC nanocrystallites are homogeneously decorated on RGO, and Pt NPs with a size of ca. 3 nm are dispersed on both RGO and WC. The prepared Pt-WC/RGO is used as an electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Compared with the Pt/RGO, commercial carbon-supported Pt (Pt/C) and PtRu alloy (PtRu/C) electrocatalysts, the Pt-WC/RGO composites demonstrate higher electrochemical active surface area and excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation, such as better tolerance toward CO, higher peak current density, lower onset potential and long-term stability, which could be attributed to the characterized RGO support, highly dispersed Pt NPs and WC nanocrystallites and the valid synergistic effect resulted from the increased interface between WC and Pt. The present work proves that Pt-WC/RGO composites could be a promising alternative catalyst for direct methanol fuel cells where WC plays the important role as a functional additive in preparing Pt-based catalysts because of its CO tolerance and lower price.
