The persistence of the HgCl2 molecule in five new compounds in the system (NH4)(w)HgxCly(H2O)(z) with w : x : y : z=1 : 5 : 11 : 0, 2 : 3 : 8 : 1, 4 : 3 : 10 : 2, 2 : 1 : 4 : 1, and 10 : 3 : 16 : 0

Five new compounds in the system (NH4)Cl/HgCl2/H2O have been obtained as colourless single crystals, (NH4)Hg5Cl11, (NH4)(2)Hg3Cl8(H2O), (NH4)(4)Hg3Cl10(H2O)(2), (NH4)(2)HgCl4(H2O), and (NH4)(10)Hg3Cl16. In all of these, as in HgCl2 itself, (almost) linear HgCl2 molecules persist with Hg-Cl distances varying from 229 to 236 pm. In (NH4)(10)Hg3Cl16 there are also tetrahedra [HgCl4] with d(Hg-Cl) = 247 pm present. If larger Hg-Cl distances (of up to 340 pm) are considered as belonging to the coordination sphere of Hg-II, the structures may be described as consisting of isolated octahedra and tetrahedra as in (NH4)(10)Hg3Cl16, edge-connected chains as in (NH4)(2)HgCl4(H2O), edge-connected chains and layers of octahedra as in (NH4)(4)Hg3Cl10(H2O)(2), corrugated layers of edge-connected octahedra as in (NH4)(2)Hg3Cl8(H2O), and, finally, a three-dimensional network of connected six- and seven-coordinate Hg-Cl polyhedra as in (NH4)Hg5Cl11. The water molecules are never attached to Hg-II. The (NH4)(+) cations, and sometimes Cl- anions, play a role for electroneutrality only.

Comparison of mechanical and electrical activity and interstitial cells of Cajal in urinary bladders from wild-type and W/W-v mice

Background and purpose: W/Wv and wild-type murine bladders were studied to determine whether the W/Wv phenotype, which causes a reduction in, but not abolition of, tyrosine kinase activity, is a useful tool to study the function of bladder interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC).

Experimental approach: Immunohistochemistry, tension recordings and microelectrode recordings of membrane potential were performed on wild-type and mutant bladders.

Key results: Wild-type and W/Wv detrusors contained c-Kit- and vimentin-immunopositive cells in comparable quantities, distribution and morphology. Electrical field stimulation evoked tetrodotoxin-sensitive contractions in wild-type and W/Wv detrusor strips. Atropine reduced wild-type responses by 50% whereas a 25% reduction occurred in W/Wv strips. The atropine-insensitive component was blocked by pyridoxal-5-phosphate-6-azophenyl-2',4'-disulphonic acid in both tissue types. Wild-type and W/Wv detrusors had similar resting membrane potentials of -48 mV. Spontaneous electrical activity in both tissue types comprised action potentials and unitary potentials. Action potentials were nifedipine-sensitive whereas unitary potentials were not. Excitatory junction potentials were evoked by single pulses in both tissues. These were reduced by atropine in wild-type tissues but not in W/Wv preparations. The atropine-insensitive component was abolished by pyridoxal-5-phosphate-6-azophenyl-2',4'-disulphonic acid in both preparations.

Conclusions and implications: Bladders from W/Wv mice contain c-Kit- and vimentin-immunopositive ICC. There are similarities in the electrical and contractile properties of W/Wv and wild-type detrusors. However, significant differences were found in the pharmacology of the responses to neurogenic stimulation with an apparent up-regulation of the purinergic component. These findings indicate that the W/Wv strain may not be the best model to study ICC function in the bladder.

Value creation and value claiming in strategic outsourcing decisions: A resource contingency perspective

This study integrates the concepts of value creation and value claiming into a theoretical framework that emphasizes the dependence of resource value maximization on value-claiming motivations in outsourcing decisions. To test this theoretical framework, it develops refutable implications to explain the firm's outsourcing decision, and it uses data from 178 firms in the publishing and printing industry on outsourcing of application services. The results show that in outsourcing decisions, resource value and transaction costs are simultaneously considered and that outsourcing decisions are dependent on alignment between resource and transaction attributes. The findings support a resource contingency view that highlights value-claiming mechanisms as resource contingency in interorganizational strategic decisions.

Drivers of sales performance: a contemporary meta-analysis. Have salespeople become knowledge brokers?

It has been 25 years since the publication of a comprehensive review of the full spectrum of salesperformance drivers. This study takes stock of the contemporary field and synthesizes empirical evidence from the period 1982–2008. The authors revise the classification scheme for sales performance determinants devised by Walker et al. (1977) and estimate both the predictive validity of its sub-categories and the impact of a range of moderators on determinant-sales performance relationships. Based on multivariate causal model analysis, the results make two major observations: (1) Five sub-categories demonstrate significant relationships with sales performance: selling-related knowledge (ß=.28), degree of adaptiveness (ß=.27), role ambiguity (ß=-.25), cognitive aptitude (ß=.23) and work engagement (ß=.23). (2) These sub-categories are moderated by measurement method, research context, and salestype variables. The authors identify managerial implications of the results and offer suggestions for further research, including the conjecture that as the world is moving toward a knowledge-intensive economy, salespeople could be functioning as knowledge-brokers. The results seem to back this supposition and indicate how it might inspire future research in the field of personal selling.

Observation of K-Shell Soft X Ray Emission of Nitrogen Irradiated by XUV-Free Electron Laser FLASH at Intensities Greater than 10(16) W/cm(2)

In the past few years, the development of light sources of the 4(th) generation, namely XUV/X-ray Free Electron Lasers provides to the scientific community outstanding tools to investigate matter under extreme conditions never obtained in laboratories so far. As theory is at its infancy, the analysis of matter via the self-emission of the target is of central importance. The characterization of such dense matter is possible if photons can escape the medium. As the absorption of K-shell X-ray transitions is minimal, it plays a key role in this study. We report here the first successful observation of K-shell emission of Nitrogen at 430 eV using an XUV-Free Electron Laser to irradiate solid Boron Nitride targets under exceptional conditions: photon energy of 92 eV, pulse duration of similar to 20 fs, micro focusing leading to intensities larger than 10(16) W/cm(2). Using a Bragg crystal of THM coupled to a CCD, we resolved K-shell line emission from different charge states. We demonstrate that the spectroscopic data allow characterization of electron heating processes when X-ray radiation is interacting with solid matter. 'A new sword on an old anvil': W.B.Yeats, Robert Graves and the Anglo-Irish Tradition

Throughout his writing life, Robert Graves was consistently and often publicly hostile to the work of W.B. Yeats, whilst still also owing a considerable debt to the older poet (who he never met). This essay explores Graves' complex responses to Yeats, arguing that his antagonism may be understood in the light of his own Anglo-Irish background, and is implicated in his relations with his father, Alfred Perceval Graves, as well as his experience of the First World War. Probing the suggestiveness of Graves's claim in 1959 that his poems 'remain true to the Anglo-Irish poetic tradition into which I was born', it traces the relation between Yeats and Graves through correspondence, critical writings, and through a comparative reading of Yeats's A Vision and Graves's The White Goddess, and reveals underlying similarities in their critical and mythological thinking in spite of Graves's public disavowal of the Yeatsian aesthetic.
