Enhancement of dielectric constant and associated coupling of polarization behavior in thin film relaxor superlattices

Thin film capacitor structures in which the dielectric is composed of superlattices of the relaxors [0.2Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O- 3-0.8BaTiO(3)] and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 have been fabricated by pulsed laser deposition. Superlattice wavelength (Lambda) was varied between similar to3 and similar to 600 nm, and dielectric properties were investigated as a function of Lambda. Progressive enhancement of the dielectric constant was observed on decreasing Lambda, and, in contrast to previous work, this was not associated with the onset of Maxwell-Wagner behavior. Polarization measurements as a function of temperature suggested that the observed enhancement in dielectric constant was associated with the onset of a coupled response. The superlattice wavelength (Lambda =20 nm) at which coupled functional behavior became apparent is comparable to that found in literature for the onset of coupled structural behavior (between Lambda =5 nm and Lambda =10 nm). Consociationalism and the evolution of political cleavages in Northern Ireland, 1989-2004

Political cleavages are often understood as deriving from either deep-rooted social divisions or institutional incentives. Contemporary Northern Ireland provides a test of the mutability of apparently entrenched cleavages to institutional change. Research undertaken before the ceasefire in the 1990s found noticeable asymmetries in the patterns of cleavage within the unionist and nationalist blocs. Within the unionist bloc, economic 'left-right' issues formed the main ideological division between the two major unionist parties. This contrasted with an ethno-national source of ideological division between the two nationalist parties. The emergence of a consociational form of government structure since then has demonstrated the ability of institutional incentives to swiftly reform some aspects of party competition however. As evidence of this, we show that between 1989 and 2004 there was little change in the sources of support for Sinn F�©in relative to the SDLP, but the influence of left-right ideology within the unionist bloc was negated as the influence of ethno-nationalism dramatically increased.

Ultrafast coherent control and quantum encoding of molecular vibrations in D2+ using intense laser pulses

Intense, few-femtosecond pulse technology has enabled studies of the fastest vibrational relaxation processes. The hydrogen group vibrations can be imaged and manipulated using intense infrared pulses. Through numerical simulation, we demonstrate an example of ultrafast coherent control that could be effected with current experimental facilities, and observed using high-resolution time-of-flight spectroscopy. The proposal is a pump-probe-type technique to manipulate the D2+ ion with ultrashort pulse sequences. The simulations presented show that vibrational selection can be achieved through pulse delay. We find that the vibrational system can be purified to a two-level system thus realizing a vibrational qubit. A novel scheme for the selective transfer of population between these two levels, based on a Raman process and conditioned upon the delay time of a second control-pulse is outlined, and may enable quantum encoding with this system.
