Controlling coherent electromagnetic interactions in molecular systems is a problem of both fundamental interest and important applicative potential in the development of photonic and opto-electronic devices. The strength of these interactions determines both the absorption and emission properties of molecules coupled to nanostructures, effectively governing the optical properties of such a composite metamaterial. Here we report on the observation of strong coupling between a plasmon supported by an assembly of oriented gold nanorods (ANR) and a molecular exciton. We show that the coupling is easily engineered and is deterministic as both spatial and spectral overlap between the plasmonic structure and molecular aggregates are controlled. We think that these results in conjunction with the flexible geometry of the ANR are of potential significance to the development of plasmonic molecular devices.

In this Letter we report on a near collective x-ray scattering experiment on shock-compressed targets. A highly coupled Al plasma was generated and probed by spectrally resolving an x-ray source forward scattered by the sample. A significant reduction in the intensity of the elastic scatter was observed, which we attribute to the formation of an incipient long-range order. This speculation is confirmed by x-ray scattering calculations accounting for both electron degeneracy and strong coupling effects. Measurements from rear side visible diagnostics are consistent with the plasma parameters inferred from x-ray scattering data. These results give the experimental evidence of the strongly coupled ionic dynamics in dense plasmas.

Frequency coupling in multifrequency discharges is a complex nonlinear interaction of the different frequency components. An alpha-mode low pressure rf capacitively coupled plasma operated simultaneously with two frequencies is investigated and the coupling of the two frequencies is observed to greatly influence the excitation and ionization within the discharge. Through this, plasma production and sustainment are dictated by the corresponding electron dynamics and can be manipulated through the dual-frequency sheath. These mechanisms are influenced by the relative voltage and also the relative phase of the two frequencies.

A quantitative approach is used to understand the chain growth mechanism in FT synthesis on the Ru, Fe, Rh, and Re surfaces. The C-C coupling reactions are extensively calculated on the stepped metal surfaces. Combining the coupling barriers and reactant stabilities, we investigate the reaction rates of all possible C, + C-1 coupling pathways on the metal surfaces. It is found that (i) all the transition-state structures are similar on these surfaces, while some coupling barriers are very different; (ii) the dominant chain growth pathways on these surfaces are different: C + CH and CH + CH on Rh and Ru surfaces, C + CH3 on Fe surface, and C + CH on Re surface. The common features of the major coupling reactions together with those on the Co surface are also discussed.

In many finite element analysis models it would be desirable to combine reduced- or lower-dimensional element types with higher-dimensional element types in a single model. In order to achieve compatibility of displacements and stress equilibrium at the junction or interface between the differing element types, it is important in such cases to integrate into the analysis some scheme for coupling the element types. A novel and effective scheme for establishing compatibility and equilibrium at the dimensional interface is described and its merits and capabilities are demonstrated. Plasma ionization, and associated mode transitions, in dual radio-frequency driven atmospheric pressure plasmas are governed through nonlinear frequency coupling in the dynamics of the plasma boundary sheath. Ionization in low-power mode is determined by the nonlinear coupling of electron heating and the momentary local plasma density. Ionization in high-power mode is driven by electron avalanches during phases of transient high electric fields within the boundary sheath. The transition between these distinctly different modes is controlled by the total voltage of both frequency components.

Reductive cyclisation of ail E-vinyl bromide with ail allylic acetate proceeds under palladium catalysis 10 give the 8-dehydropumiliotoxin skeleton, a potential advanced precursor to 8-deoxypumiliotoxin alkaloids. Control of the stereochemistry of the E-vinyl bromide precursor is achieved readily using the Kogen or Bruckner bromophosphonate reagents and the reductive cyclisation proceeds with retention of the vinyl bromide stereochemistry. The mechanism for the cyclisation involves an in situ conversion of the allylic acetate to ail allyl stannane followed by ail intramolecular Stille-type coupling.

N-Acetyl-2-azetine undergoes Lewis acid catalysed formal [4+2]-cycloaddition with imines derived from aromatic amines to initially give an approximately 1: 1 mixture of exo-endo-diastereoisomeric 1-(2a,3,4,8b-tetrahydro-2H-1,4-diaza-cyclobuta[a]naphthalen-1-yl)-ethanone cycloadducts which were detected by proton NMR spectroscopy. These products, which were too unstable to isolate, and characterise, reacted further with aromatic amines to give 2,3,4-trisubstituted tetrahydroquinolines in good to excellent yield, predominantly as a single diastereoisomer, with the minor diastereoisomer converting to the major diastereoisomer on silica. The cycloaddition was irreversible and a mechanism is presented for the formation of the major diastereoisomer from the mixture of diastereoisomeric intermediates. A range of conditions is described for converting the 2,3,4-trisubsitituted tetrahydroquinolines into 2,3-disubstituted quinolines.
