The use of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste crops has received considerable attention as a sustainable feedstock that can replace fossil fuels for the production of renewable energy. Therefore, municipal bin-waste in the form of hay was investigated as a potential energy crop for fermentable sugars production. Hydrolysis of hay by dilute phosphoric acid was carried out in autoclave parr reactor, where reactor temperature (135-200 degrees c) and acid concentration (2.5-10% (w/w)) were examined. Analysis of the decomposition rate of hemicellulosic biomass was undertaken using HPLC of the reaction products. Xylose production reached a maximum value of 13.5 g/100 g dry mass corresponding to a yield of 67% at the best identified conditions of 2.5 wt% H3PO4, 175 degrees C, 10 min reaction time, and at 5 wt% H3PO4, 150 degrees C, and 5 min reaction time. For glucose, an average yield of 25% was obtained at 5 wt% H3PO4, 175 degrees C and 30 min. Glucose degradation to HMF was achieved at 10 wt% H3PO4 and 200 degrees C. The maximum yield for produced arabinose was an average of 3 g/100 g dry. mass corresponding to 100% of the total possible arabinose. The kinetic study of the acid hydrolysis was also carried out using the Saeman and the Two-fraction models. It was found for both models that the kinetic constants (k) depend on the acid concentration and temperature. For xylose and arabinose it was found that the rate of formation was more favoured than the rate of degradation. By contrast, for glucose it was found that glucose degradation was occurring faster than glucose formation. It can be concluded that dilute phosphoric acid hydrolysis of hay crop is feasible for the production of fermentable sugars which are essential for bioethanol synthesis.

The Maillard or browning reaction between sugar and protein contributes to the increased chemical modification and cross-linking of long-lived tissue proteins in diabetes. To evaluate the role of glycation and oxidation in these reactions, we have studied the effects of oxidative and antioxidative conditions and various types of inhibitors on the reaction of glucose with rat tail tendon collagen in phosphate buffer at physiological pH and temperature. The chemical modifications of collagen that were measured included fructoselysine, the glycoxidation products N epsilon-(carboxymethyl)lysine and pentosidine and fluorescence. Collagen cross-linking was evaluated by analysis of cyanogen bromide peptides using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and by changes in collagen solubilization on treatment with pepsin or sodium dodecylsulfate. Although glycation was unaffected, formation of glycoxidation products and cross-linking of collagen were inhibited by antioxidative conditions. The kinetics of formation of glycoxidation products proceeded with a short lag phase and were independent of the amount of Amadori adduct on the protein, suggesting that autoxidative degradation of glucose was a major contributor to glycoxidation and cross-linking reactions. Chelators, sulfhydryl compounds, antioxidants, and aminoguanidine also inhibited formation of glycoxidation products, generation of fluorescence, and cross-linking of collagen without significant effect on the extent of glycation of the protein. We conclude that autoxidation of glucose or Amadori compounds on protein plays a major role in the formation of glycoxidation products and cross-liking of collagen by glucose in vitro and that chelators, sulfhydryl compounds, antioxidants, and aminoguanidine act as uncouplers of glycation from subsequent glycoxidation and cross-linking reactions.

Study of nanomechanical response of iron carbides is important because presence of iron carbides greatly influences the performance and longevity of steel components. This work contributes to the literature by exploring nanoindentation of nanocrystalline Fe3C and tetrahedral-Fe4C using molecular dynamics simulation. The chemical interactions of iron and carbon were described through an analytical bond order inter-atomic potential (ABOP) energy function. The indentations were performed at an indentation speed of 50 m/sec and a repeat trial was performed at 5 m/sec. Load-displacement (P-h) curve for both these carbides showed residual indentation depth and maximum indentation depth (hf/hmax) ratio to be higher than 0.7 i.e. a circumstance where Oliver and Pharr method was not appropriate to be applied to evaluate the material properties. Alternate evaluation revealed Fe3C to be much harder than Fe4C. Gibbs free energy of formation and radial distribution function, coupled with state of the average local temperature and von Mises stresses indicate the formation of a new phase of iron-carbide. Formation of this newer phase was found to be due to deviatoric strain rather than the high temperature induced in the substrate during nanoindentation

The effect of colloidal nanosilica on the fresh and rheological parameters, plastic shrinkage, heat of hydration, and compressive strength of cement-based grouts is investigated in this paper. The fresh and rheological properties were evaluated by the minislump flow, Marsh cone flow time, Lombardi plate cohesion meter, yield value, and plastic viscosity. The key parameters investigated were the dosages of nanosilica and superplasticizer and temperature of mixing water. Statistical models and isoresponse curves were developed to capture the significant trends. The dosage of nanosilica had a significant effect on the results. The increase in the dosage of nanosilica led to increasing the values of flow time, plate cohesion meter, yield stress, plastic viscosity, heat of hydration at 1 day and 3 days, and compressive strength at 1 day, while reducing the minislump, plastic shrinkage up 24 h, and compressive strength at 3, 7, and 28 days. Conversely, the increase in the dosage of superplasticizer led to decreasing the values of flow time, plate cohesion meter, yield stress, plastic viscosity, heat of hydration at 1 day and 3 days, and compressive strength at 1 day, while increasing the minislump, plastic shrinkage, and compressive strength at 3 and 7 days. Increasing the temperature of mixing water led to a notable increase in the results of minislump, flow time, plastic viscosity, heat of hydration at 3 days, and compressive strength at 1 day, while it reduced the plate cohesion, compressive strength at 3, 7, and 28 days. The statistical models developed in this study can facilitate optimizing the mixture proportions of grouts for target performance by reducing the number of trial batches needed.

This paper employs a unique extension-decomposition-aggregation (EDA) scheme to solve the formation flight control problem for multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The corresponding decentralised longitudinal and lateral formation autopilots are novelly designed to maintain the overall formation stability when encountering changes of the formation error and topologies. The concept of propagation layer number (PLN) is also proposed to provide an intuitive criterion to judge which type of formation topology is more suitable to minimise formation error propagation (FEP). The criterion states that the smaller the PLN of the formation is, the quicker the response to the formation error is. A smaller PLN also means that the resulting topology provides better prevention to the FEP. Simulation studies of formation flight of multiple Aerosonde UAVs demonstrate that the designed formation controller based on the EDA strategy performs satisfactorily in maintaining the overall formation stable, and the bidirectional partial-mesh topology is found to provide the best overall response to the formation error propagation based on the PLN criterion.

We report a new version of the UMIST database for astrochemistry. The previous (1995) version has been updated and its format has been revised. The database contains the rate coefficients, temperature ranges and - where available - the temperature dependence of 4113 gas-phase reactions important in astrophysical environments. The data involve 396 species and 12 elements. We have also tabulated permanent electric dipole moments of the neutral species and heats of formation. A new table lists the photo process cross sections (ionisation, dissociation, fragmentation) for a few species for which these quantities have been measured. Data for Deuterium fractionation are given in a separate table. Finally, a new online Java applet for data extraction has been created and its use is explained in detail. The detailed new datafiles and associated software are available on the World Wide Web at http://www.rate99.co.uk.

We report the release of a new version of the UMIST database for astrochemistry. The database contains the rate coefficients of 3864 gas-phase reactions important in interstellar and circumstellar chemistry and involves 395 species and 12 elements. The previous (1990) version of this database has been widely used by modellers. In addition to the rate coefficients, we also tabulate permanent electric dipole moments of the neutral species and heats of formation. A numerical model of the chemical evolution of a dark cloud is calculated and important differences to that calculated with the previous database noted.

Absolute photodetachment cross sections of two anions of astrophysical importance CN- and C3N- were measured to be (1.18 +- (0.03)_stat (0.17)_sys) * 10^-17 cm^2 and (1.43 +- (0.14)_stat (0.37)_sys) * 10^-17 cm^2 respectively at the ultraviolet wavelength of 266 nm (4.66 eV). These relatively large values of the cross sections imply that photodetachment can play a major role in the destruction mechanisms of these anions particularly in photon-dominated regions. We have therefore carried out model calculations using the newly measured cross sections to investigate the abundance of these molecular anions in the cirumstellar envelope of the carbon-rich star IRC+10216. The model predicts the relative importance of the various mechanisms of formation and destruction of these species in different regions of the envelope. UV photodetachment was found to be the major destruction mechanism for both CN- and C3N- anions in those regions of the envelope, where they occur in peak abundance. It was also found that photodetachment plays a crucial role in the degradation of these anions throughout the circumstellar envelope.

High-frequency fluctuations are observed with the Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere (ROSA) instrument (Jess et al. 2010, Solar Phys, 261, 363) at the Dunn Solar Telescope. This can produce simultaneous observations in up to six channels, at different heights in the photosphere and chromosphere, at an unprecedentedly high cadence of 0.5 seconds, and at a spatial resolution of 100 km after photometrically correct speckle reconstruction. Here we concentrate on observations at two levels. The first is in the G-band of the CH radical at 4305.5Å, bandpass 9.2Å, with height of formation z <250 km at a cadence of 0.525 sec corresponding to Nyquist frequency 950 mHz. The second is in the Ca II K-line core at 3933.7Å, bandpass 1.0Å, with height of formation z <1300 km, and cadence 4.2 sec giving Nyquist frequency 120 mHz. The data span 53 min, and the maximum field of view is 45 Mm. The data were taken on 28 May 2009 in internetwork and network near disk center. Using both Fourier and Morlet wavelet methods we find evidence in the G-band spectra for intensity fluctuations above noise out to frequencies f >> 100 mHz. The K-line signal is noisier and is seen only for f <50 mHz. With wavelet techniques we find that G-band spectral power with 20 <f <100 mHz is clearly concentrated in the intergranular lanes and especially at the locations of magnetic elements indicated by G-band bright points. This wavelet power is highly intermittent in time. By cross-correlating the data we find that pulses of high-frequency G-band power in the photosphere tend to be followed by increases in K-line emission in the chromosphere with a time lag of about 2 min.
