In this investigation, the seismic torsional response of a multi-storey concentrically braced frame (CBF) plan irregular structure is evaluated numerically and experimentally through a series of hybrid tests. CBF structures have become popular in seismic design because they are one of the most efficient types of steel structures to resist earthquake loading. However, their response under plan irregular conditions has received little focus mostly in part
due to their complex behaviour under seismic loading conditions. The majority of research on the seismic response of plan irregular structures is based purely on numerical investigations. This paper provides much needed experimental investigation of the seismic response of a CBF plan irregular structure with the aim of characterising the response of this class of structure. The effectiveness of the Eurocode 8 torsional effects provision as a method of designing for
low levels of mass eccentricity is evaluated. Results indicate that some of the observations made by purely numerical models are valid in that; torsionally stiff structures perform well and the stiff side of the structure is subjected to a greater ductility demand compared to the flexible side of the structure. The Eurocode 8 torsional effects provision is shown to be adequate in terms of ductility and interstorey drift however the structure performs poorly
in terms of floor rotation. Importantly, stiffness eccentricity occurs when the provision is applied to the structure when no mass eccentricity exists and results in a significant increase in floor rotations.

The effect of water depth on the performance of a small surging wave energy converter (WEC) is investigated analytically, numerically and experimentally. It is shown that although the average annual incident wave power is significantly reduced by water depth, a large proportion of this reduction is due to the dissipation of highly energetic, but largely unexploitable seas. It is also shown that the power capture is related more closely to incident wave force than incident wave power. Experimental results demonstrate that both the surge wave force and power capture of a flap-type WEC increase in shallow water.

This paper reports an experimental study in which samples of soft kaolin clay (100 mm in diameter and 200 mm in height) were reinforced with vertical columns of sand and tested under triaxial conditions. Samples were reinforced with either a single column of sand of 32 mm diameter or three columns of sand, each of 20 mm diameter. The replacement method was used to form the columns. The columns were installed in the clay to depths of 120 and 200 mm. Tests were also carried out on samples that were not reinforced with sand columns. The samples were compressed under both drained and undrained conditions. It was found that the undrained shear strength of samples containing full-depth columns was greatly improved compared with that of the unreinforced samples. In the fully drained tests, the sample installed with a single column of 32 mm diameter exhibited better performance than the sample with three columns of 20 mm diameter, although the area replacement ratio in the case of the three 20 mm diameter columns was higher than that of the single 32 mm diameter column. However, the undrained strength of the composite material was not particularly affected by the number of columns.

The introduction of advanced welding methods as an alternative joining process to riveting in the manufacture of primary aircraft structure has the potential to realize reductions in both manufacturing costs and structural weight. However, welding processes can introduce undesirable residual stresses and distortions in the final fabricated components, as well as localized loss of mechanical properties at the weld joints. The aim of this research is to determine and characterize the key process effects of advanced welding assembly methods on stiffened panel static strength performance. This in-depth understanding of the relationships between welding process effects and buckling and collapse strength is required to achieve manufacturing cost reductions without introducing structural analysis uncertainties and hence conservative over designed welded panels. This current work is focused at the sub-component level and examines the static strength of friction stir welded multi stiffener panels. The undertaken experimental and computational studies have demonstrated that local skin buckling is predominantly influenced by the magnitude of welding induced residual stresses and associated geometric distortions, whereas panel collapse behavior is sensitive to the lateral width of the physically joined skin and stiffener flange material, the strength of material in the Heat Affected Zone as well as the magnitude of the welding induced residual stresses. The impedance and radiation pattern parameters of a lambda/2 quadrifilar helix antenna (QHA) with turn angles in the range 0 degrees to 235 degrees are analyzed. It is shown that by selecting the helix turn angle to satisfy the minimum bandwidth and beamwidth requirements, an improved electrical performance and a reduction in the physical size of the antenna is obtained. This is demonstrated by comparing the performance of a conventional half turn QHA with structures having a smaller pitch length. The computed results are validated by experimental data at L-band.

Applications such as soil, rock and oil-well grouting all require enormous amounts of cement and are good examples of areas where a high volume of fly ash could partially replace cement to produce low-cost, environmentally safe and durable concrete. There is an increasing need to identify the rheological properties of cement grout using a simple test to determine the fluidity, and other properties of underwater grouts such as washout resistance and compressive strength. This paper presents statistical models developed using a fractorial design which was carried out to model the influence of key parameters on properties affecting the performance of underwater grout. Such responses of fluidity included mini-slump and flow time measured by Marsh cone, washout resistance, unit weight and compressive strength. The models are valid for mixes with 0.40 to 0.60 water-to-cementitious materials ratio, 0.02 to 0.08% of anti-washout admixture, by mass of binder, and 0.6 to 1.8% of superplasticizer, by mass of cementitious materials. The grout was made with 50% of pulverized-fuel ash replacement, by mass ofcementitious materials. Also presented are the derived models that enable the identification of underlying primary factors and their interactions that influence the modelled responses of underwater cement grout. Such parameters can be useful to reduce the test protocol needed for proportioning of underwater cement grout. This paper highlighted the influence of W/CM and dosage of antiwashout admixture and superplasticizer on fluidity, washout resistance and compressive strength and attempted also to demonstrate the usefulness of the models to improve understanding of trade-offs between parameters.

In this paper, we verify a new phase conjugating architecture suitable for deployment as (lie core building block in retrodirective antenna arrays, which can be scaled to any number of elements in a modular way without impacting on complexity. Our solution is based on a modified in-phase and quadrature modulator architecture, which completely resolves four major shortcomings of the conventional mixer-based approach currently used for the synthesis of phase conjugated energy derived from a sampled incoming wavefront. 1) The architecture presented removes the need for a local oscillator running at twice the RF signal frequency to be conjugated. 2) It maintains a constant transmit power even if receive power goes as low as -120 dBm. 3) All unwanted re-transmit signal products are suppressed by at least 40 dB. 4) The issue of poor RF-IF leakage prevalent in mixer-based phase-conjugation solutions is completely mitigated. The circuit has also been shown to have high conjugation accuracy (better than +/-1 degrees at -60-dBm input). Near theoretically perfect experimental monostatic and bistatic results are presented for a ten-element retrodirective array constructed using the new phase conjugation architecture.

A combined antennas and propagation study has been undertaken with a view to directly improving link conditions for wireless body area networks. Using tissue-equivalent numerical and experimental phantoms representative of muscle tissue at 2.45 GHz, we show that the node to node [S-21] path gain performance of a new wearable integrated antenna (WIA) is up to 9 dB better than a conventional compact Printed-F antenna, both of which are suitable for integration with wireless node circuitry. Overall, the WIA performed extremely well with a measured radiation efficiency of 38% and an impedance bandwidth of 24%. Further benefits were also obtained using spatial diversity, with the WIA providing up to 7.7 dB of diversity gain for maximal ratio combining. The results also show that correlation was lower for a multipath environment leading to higher diversity gain. Furthermore, a diversity implementation with the new antenna gave up to 18 dB better performance in terms of mean power level and there was a significant improvement in level crossing rates and average fade durations when moving from a single-branch to a two-branch diversity system.

To increase the structural efficiency of integrally machined aluminium alloy stiffened panels, it is plausible to introduce plate sub-stiffening to increase the local stability and thus panel static strength performance. Reported herein is the experimental validation of prismatic sub-stiffening, and the computational verification of such concepts within larger recurring structure. The experimental work demonstrates the potential to 'control' plate buckling modes. For the tested sub-stiffening design, an initial plate buckling performance gain of +89% over an equivalent mass design was measured. The numerical simulations, modelling the tested sub-stiffening design, demonstrate equivalent behaviour and performance gains (+66%) within larger structures consisting of recurring panels. Previous work has demonstrated the potential to introduce plate element sub-stiffening to increase the local stability and thus static strength performance of integrally machined aluminium alloy stiffened panels. The introduction of plate element prismatic sub-stiffening modifies local plate buckling behaviour and within realistic design constraints, may produce sizable performance gains with equivalent mass designs. This article examines through experimental and computational analysis the potential of non-prismatic sub-stiffening for tailoring local plate stability performance. Using non-prismatic sub-stiffening, the experimental work demonstrates potential initial buckling performance gains with equivalent mass designs (+185%), and computationally, potential mass savings with equivalent static strength performance designs (-9.4%). In this paper, we provide experimental evidence to show that enhanced bit error rate (BER) performance is possible using a retrodirective array operating in a dynamically varying multipath environment. The operation of such a system will be compared to that obtained by a conventional nonretrodirective array. The ability of the array to recover amplitude shift keyed encoded data transmitted from a remote location whose position is not known a priori is described. In addition, its ability to retransmit data inserted at the retrodirective array back to a spatially remote beacon location whose position is also not known beforehand is also demonstrated. Comparison with an equivalent conventional fixed beam antenna array utilizing an identical radiating aperture arrangement to that of the retrodirective array are given. These show that the retrodirective array can effectively exploit the presence of time varying multipath in order to give significant reductions in BER over what can be otherwise achieved. Additionally, the retrodirective system is shown to be able to deliver low BER regardless of whether line of sight is present or absent.

To increase structural efficiency of stiffened panels in an aircraft, it is plausible to introduce skin buckling containment features to increase the local skin stability and thus static strength performance. Introducing buckling containment features may also significantly influence the fatigue crack growth performance of the stiffened panel. This study focuses on the experimental demonstration of panel durability with skin bay buckling containment features. Through a series of fatigue crack growth tests on integrally machined aluminium alloy stiffened panels, the potential to simultaneously improve static strength performance and crack propagation behaviour is demonstrated. The introduction of prismatic buckling containment features which have yielded significant static strength performance gains have herein demonstrated potential fatigue life gains of up to + 63 per cent.

A variety of short time delays inserted between pairs of subjects were found to affect their ability to synchronize a musical task. The subjects performed a clapping rhythm together from separate sound-isolated rooms via headphones and without visual contact. One-way time delays between pairs were manipulated electronically in the range of 3 to 78 ms. We are interested in quantifying the envelope of time delay within which two individuals produce synchronous per- formances. The results indicate that there are distinct regimes of mutually coupled behavior, and that `natural time delay'o¨delay within the narrow range associated with travel times across spatial arrangements of groups and ensembleso¨supports the most stable performance. Conditions outside of this envelope, with time delays both below and above it, create characteristic interaction dynamics in the mutually coupled actions of the duo. Trials at extremely short delays (corresponding to unnaturally close proximity) had a tendency to accelerate from anticipation. Synchronization lagged at longer delays (larger than usual physical distances) and produced an increasingly severe deceleration and then deterioration of performed rhythms. The study has implications for music collaboration over the Internet and suggests that stable rhythmic performance can be achieved by `wired ensembles' across distances of thousands of kilometers.
