This paper describes the detailed validation of a computer model designed to simulate the transient light-off in a two-stroke oxidation catalyst. A plug flow reactor is employed to provide measurements of temperature and gas concentration at various radial and axial locations inside the catalyst. These measurements are recorded at discrete intervals during a transient light-off in which the inlet temperature is increased from ambient to 300oC at rates of up to 6oC/sec. The catalyst formulation used in the flow reactor, and its associated test procedures, are then simulated by the computer and a comparison made between experimental readings and model predictions. The design of the computer model to which this validation exercise relates is described in detail in a separate technical paper. The first section of the paper investigates the warm-up characteristics of the substrate and examines the validity of the heat transfer predictions between the wall and the gas in the absence of chemical reactions. The predictions from a typical single-component CO transient light-off test are discussed in the second section and are compared with experimental data. In particular the effect of the temperature ramp on the light-off curve and reaction zone development is examined. An analysis of the C3H6 conversion is given in the third section while the final section examines the accuracy of the light-off curves which are produced when both CO and C3H6 are present in the feed gas. The analysis shows that the heat and mass transfer calculations provided reliable predictions of the warm-up behaviour and post light-off gas concentration profiles. The self-inhibition and cross-inhibition terms in the global rate expressions were also found to be reasonably reliable although the surface reaction rates required calibration with experimental data.

The physics of the plume-induced shock and separation, particularly at high plume to exit pressure ratios with and without shock-turbulent boundary-layer control methods, were studied using computational techniques. Mass-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a two-equation turbulence model were solved by using a fully implicit finite volume scheme and time.marching algorithm. The control methodologies for shock interactions included a porous tail and a porous extension attached at the nozzle exit or trailing edge. The porous tail produced a weaker shock and fixed the shock position on the control surface. The effect of the porous extension on shock interactions was mainly to restrain the plume from strongly underexpanding during a change in flight conditions. These techniques could give an additional dimension to the design and control of supersonic missiles.

This paper presents a new strategy, “state-by-state transient screening”, for kinetic characterization of states of a multicomponent catalyst as applied to TAP pulse-response experiments. The key idea is to perform an insignificant chemical perturbation of the catalytic system so that the known essential characteristics of the catalyst (e.g. oxidation degree) do not change during the experiment. Two types of catalytic substances can be distinguished: catalyst state substances, which determine the catalyst state, and catalyst dynamic substances, which are created by the perturbation. The general methodological and theoretical framework for multi-pulse TAP experiments is developed, and the general model for a one-pulse TAP experiment is solved. The primary kinetic characteristics, basic kinetic coefficients, are extracted from diffusion–reaction data and calculated as functions of experimentally measured exit-flow moments without assumptions regarding the detailed kinetic mechanism. The new strategy presented in this paper provides essential information, which can be a basis for developing a detailed reaction mechanism. The theoretical results are illustrated using furan oxidation over a VPO catalyst.

The state-by-state transient screening approach based on a pulse-response thin-zone TAP experiment is further developed whereby single-pulse kinetic tests are treated as small perturbations to catalyst compositions and analyzed using integral method of moments. Results on three primary kinetic characteristics, termed basic kinetic coefficients, are presented. These three coefficients were introduced as main observables from experimentally measured TAP-responses in a kinetic-model-free manner. Each was analytically determined from moments of responses with no assumption about the detailed kinetic model. In this paper, the inverse question of how well these coefficients represent the time evolution of the observed responses is addressed. Sets of three basic kinetic coefficients are calculated from model and experimental responses and these calculated values are used to generate 3-coefficient curves in a kinetic-model-free manner. The comparison of these 3-coefficient curves with original responses shows that three basic kinetic coefficients can be sufficient to describe the observed kinetics of exit flow time dependencies with no assumption regarding the detailed kinetic model.

Adrenomedullin (AM) and intermedin (IMD; adrenomedulln-2) are vasodilator peptides related to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). The actions of these peptides are mediated by the calcitonin receptor-like receptor (CLR) in association with one of three receptor activity-modifying proteins. CGRP is selective for CLR/receptor activity modifying protein (RAMP)1, AM for CLR/RAMP2 and -3, and IMD acts at both CGRP and AM receptors. In a model of pressure overload induced by inhibition of nitric-oxide synthase, up-regulation of AM was observed previously in cardiomyocytes demonstrating a hypertrophic phenotype. The current objective was to examine the effects of blood pressure reduction on cardiomyocyte expression of AM and IMD and their receptor components. Nomega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (35 mg/kg/day) was administered to rats for 8 weeks, with or without concurrent administration of hydralazine (50 mg/kg/day) and hydrochlorothiazide (7.5 mg/kg/day). In left ventricular cardiomyocytes from L-NAME-treated rats, increases (-fold) in mRNA expression were 1.6 (preproAM), 8.4 (preproIMD), 3.4 (CLR), 4.1 (RAMP1), 2.8 (RAMP2), and 4.4 (RAMP3). Hydralazine/hydrochlorothiazide normalized systolic blood pressure (BP) and abolished mRNA up-regulation of hypertrophic markers sk-alpha-actin and BNP and of preproAM, CLR, RAMP2, and RAMP3 but did not normalize cardiomyocyte width nor preproIMD or RAMP1 mRNA expression. The robust increase in IMD expression indicates an important role for this peptide in the cardiac pathology of this model but, unlike AM, IMD is not associated with pressure overload upon the myocardium. The concordance of IMD and RAMP1 up-regulation indicates a CGRP-type receptor action; considering also a lack of response to BP reduction, IMD may, like CGRP, have an anti-ischemic function.

Cross sections for the multi-ionization of He and Li are presented for impact energies in the range of 50 to 1000 keV/amu. These are calculated using the eikonal initial state approximation to represent the input and exit channels of the active electrons. The ionization process is simulated in a variety of ways, most notably an attempt to account for the effects of electron correlation via the inclusion of a continuum density of states (CDS) term. Inadequacies, of the CDW formulation at small impact parameters, and of the models themselves, are discussed and conclusions are drawn on what repercussions this has for the cross sections calculated.

We study the influence of non-ideal boundary and initial conditions (BIC) of a temporal analysis of products (TAP) reactor model on the data (observed exit flux) analysis. The general theory of multi-response state-defining experiments for a multi-zone TAP reactor is extended and applied to model several alternative boundary and initial conditions proposed in the literature. The method used is based on the Laplace transform and the transfer matrix formalism for multi-response experiments. Two non-idealities are studied: (1) the inlet pulse not being narrow enough (gas pulse not entering the reactor in Dirac delta function shape) and (2) the outlet non-ideality due to imperfect vacuum. The effect of these non-idealities is analyzed to the first and second order of approximation. The corresponding corrections were obtained and discussed in detail. It was found that they are negligible. Therefore, the model with ideal boundary conditions is proven to be completely adequate to the description and interpretation of transport-reaction data obtained with TAP-2 reactors.

We present a semiclassical complex angular momentum (CAM) analysis of the forward scattering peak which occurs at a translational collision energy around 32 meV in the quantum mechanical calculations for the F + H2(v = 0, j = 0) ? HF(v' = 2, j' = 0) + H reaction on the Stark–Werner potential energy surface. The semiclassical CAM theory is modified to cover the forward and backward scattering angles. The peak is shown to result from constructive/destructive interference of the two Regge states associated with two resonances, one in the transition state region and the other in the exit channel van der Waals well. In addition, we demonstrate that the oscillations in the energy dependence of the backward differential cross section are caused by the interference between the direct backward scattering and the decay of the two resonance complexes returning to the backward direction after one full rotation.

This paper describes an example of spontaneous transitions between qualitatively different coordination patterns during a cyclic lifting and lowering task. Eleven participants performed 12 trials of repetitive lifting and lowering in a ramp protocol in which the height of the lower shelf was raised or lowered I cm per cycle between 10 and 50 cm. Two distinct patterns of coordination were evident: a squat technique in which moderate range of hip, knee and ankle movement was utilised and ankle plantar-flexion occurred simultaneously with knee and hip extension; and a stoop technique in which the range of knee movement was reduced and knee and hip extension was accompanied by simultaneous ankle dorsi-flexion. Abrupt transitions from stoop to squat techniques were observed during descending trials, and from squat to stoop during ascending trials. Indications of hysteresis was observed in that transitions were more frequently observed during descending trials, and the average shelf height at the transition was 5 cm higher during ascending trials. The transitions may be a consequence of a trade-off between the biomechanical advantages of each technique and the influence of the lift height on this trade-off. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. The purpose of the experiment was to compare the level of synchronization exhibited by pairs of motor units located within and between functionally distinct regions of the biceps brachii muscle. Pairs of single motor units were recorded from seven subjects using separate electrodes located in the lateral and medial aspects of the long head of biceps brachii. Participants were required to exert a combination of flexion and supination torques so that both motor units discharged at approximately 10 pps for a parts per thousand yen200 s and the level of motor unit synchronization could be quantified. When motor unit recordings were sufficiently stable at the completion of this synchrony task, a series of ramp contractions with multiple combinations of flexion and supination torques were performed to characterize the recruitment thresholds of the motor units. Common input strength (CIS) was significantly greater (P <0.01) for the within-region pairs of motor units (0.28 extra sync. imps/s, n = 26) than for the between-region pairs (0.13 extra sync. imps/s, n = 18), but did not differ significantly for the 12 within-region pairs from the lateral head and 14 from the medial head (0.27 vs. 0.29 extra sync. imps/s; P = 0.83). Recruitment thresholds were measured for 33 motor units, but there was only a weak association between CIS and the respective recruitment patterns for motor unit pairs (n = 9). The present investigation provides evidence of a differential distribution of synaptic input across the biceps brachii motor neuron pool, but this appears to have minimal association with the recruitment patterns for individual motor units.

This research investigated the unconfined flow through dams. The hydraulic conductivity was modeled as spatially random field following lognormal distribution. Results showed that the seepage flow produced from the stochastic solution was smaller than its deterministic value. In addition, the free surface was observed to exit at a point lower than that obtained from the deterministic solution. When the hydraulic conductivity was strongly correlated in the horizontal direction than the vertical direction, the flow through the dam has markedly increased. It is suggested that it may not be necessary to construct a core in dams made from soils that exhibit high degree of variability.

This paper investigates the problem of seepage under the floor of hydraulic structures considering the compartment of flow that seeps through the surrounding banks of the canal. A computer program, utilizing a finite-element method and capable of handling three-dimensional (3D) saturated–unsaturated flow problems, was used. Different ratios of canal width/differential head applied on the structure were studied. The results produced from the two-dimensional (2D) analysis were observed to deviate largely from that obtained from 3D analysis of the same problem, despite the fact that the porous medium was isotropic and homogeneous. For example, the exit gradient obtained from 3D analysis was as high as 2.5 times its value obtained from 2D analysis. Uplift force acting upwards on the structure has also increased by about 46% compared with its value obtained from the 2D solution. When the canal width/ differential head ratio was 10 or higher, the 3D results were comparable to the 2D results. It is recommended to construct a core of low permeability soil in the banks of canal to reduce the seepage losses, uplift force, and exit gradient.

Intermedin (IMD) is a novel peptide related to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and adrenomedullin (AM). Proteolytic processing of a larger precursor yields a series of biologically active C-terminal fragments, IMD1–53, IMD1–47 and IMD8–47. IMD shares a family of receptors with AM and CGRP composed of a calcitonin-receptor like receptor (CALCRL) associated with one of three receptor activity modifying proteins (RAMP). Compared to CGRP, IMD is less potent at CGRP1 receptors but more potent at AM1 receptors and AM2 receptors; compared to AM, IMD is more potent at CGRP1 receptors but less potent at AM1 and AM2 receptors. The cellular and tissue distribution of IMD overlaps in some aspects with that of CGRP and AM but is distinct from both. IMD is present in neonatal but absent or expressed sparsely, in adult heart and vasculature and present at low levels in plasma. The prominent localization of IMD in hypothalamus and pituitary and in kidney is consistent with a physiological role in the central and peripheral regulation of the circulation and water-electrolyte homeostasis. IMD is a potent systemic and pulmonary vasodilator, influences regional blood flow and augments cardiac contractility. IMD protects myocardium from the deleterious effects of oxidative stress associated with ischaemia-reperfusion injury and exerts an anti-growth effect directly on cardiomyocytes to oppose the influence of hypertrophic stimuli. The robust increase in expression of the peptide in hypertrophied and ischaemic myocardium indicates an important protective role for IMD as an endogenous counter-regulatory peptide in the heart.

Near-infrared (NIR) imaging was used to observe water vapour flow in a gas-solid fluidized bed reactor. The technique consisted of a broadband light, an optical filter with a bandwidth centred on strong water vapour absorptions, a Vidicon NIR camera, a nozzle from which an optically active mixture of gas and water vapour was trans-illuminated by an NIR beam and collected data of transmittance were normalized to actual optical path. The procedure was applied to a thin fluidized bed reactor with a low aspect ratio of tube to particle diameters (D-1/d(p)) in order to validate the wall effect on flow dynamics and mass transfer during the reduction of ceria-silica by hydrogen. High concentrations of water vapour emerged in the vicinity of the wall when the bed was operated at pseudo-static conditions but disappeared when the bed was run at minimum bubbling conditions. This result shows the capability of optical methods with affordable costs to 2D imaging opaque packed bed by using a spatially resolved probe located at the exit, which is of great benefit for in situ visualization of anisotropic concentrations in packed beds under industrially relevant conditions and thus for elucidation of the underlying reaction mechanism and diffusion interactions. This work presents a procedure based on spatially-resolved near-infrared imaging, in order to observe temperature and composition maps in gas-solid packed beds subjected to effects of aspect ratio and non-isothermal conditions. The technique was applied to the water vapour flow in a packed bed adsorber of low aspect ratio, filled with silica gel, using a tuneable diode laser, focal planar array detector and tomographic reconstruction. The 2D projected images from parallel scanning permitted data to be retrieved from the packing and above the packing sections of 12.0×12.0×18.2mm at a volume-resolution of 0.15×0.15×0.026mm and a time-resolution of less than 3min. The technique revealed uneven temperature and composition maps in the core packed bed and in the vicinity of the wall due to flow maldistribution. In addition, the heat uptake from the packed bed and local cross-mixing were experimentally ascertained by local profiles of the water vapour composition and temperature under various aspect ratios and feed flow rates. The relative deviations in temperature and compositions were 11.1% and 9.3%, respectively. The deviation in composition, which covers the packing and above the packing sections, was slightly higher than the deviation of 8% obtained up-to-date but was limited to the exit of a packed bed adsorber. © 2011.
