Narrow bandwidth red electroluminescence from solution-processed lanthanide-doped polymer thin films
Resumo:
Narrow bandwidth red electroluminescence from OLED devices fabricated using a simple solution-based approach is demonstrated. A spin-casting method is employed to fabricate organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices comprising a poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) host matrix doped with a europium beta-diketonate complex, Eu(dbM)(3)(Phen) (dibenzoylmethanate, dbm; 1,10-phenanthroline, Phen) on glass/ indium tin oxide (ITO)/3,4-polyethylene-dioxythiophene-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT) substrates. Saturated red europium ion emission, based on the (5)Do ->F-7(2) transition, is centered at a wavelength of 612 nm with a full width at half maximum of 3.5 rim. A maximum external quantum efficiency of 6.3 x 10(-2) cd/A (3.1 X 10(-2)%) and a maximum luminance of 130 cd/M-2 at 400 mA/cm(2) and 25 V is measured for ITO/PEDOT/PVK:Eu(dbM)3(Phen)/Ca/Al devices. This measured output luminance is comparable to that of devices fabricated using more sophisticated small molecule evaporation techniques. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

In this present work we describe a poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticle formulation for intracellular delivery of plasmid DNA. This formulation was developed to encapsulate DNA within PLGA nanoparticles that combined salting out and emulsion evaporation processes. This process reduced the requirement for sonication which can induce degradation of the DNA. A monodispersed nanoparticle population with a mean diameter of approximately 240 nm was produced, entrapping a model plasmid DNA in both supercoiled and open circular structures. To induce endosomal escape of the nanoparticles, a superficial cationic charge was introduced using positively charged surfactants cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and dimethyldidodecylammonium bromide (DMAB), which resulted in elevated zeta potentials. As expected, both cationic coatings reduced cell viability, but at equivalent positive zeta potentials, the DMAB coated nanoparticles induced significantly less cytotoxicity than those coated with CTAB. Fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that the DMAB coated cationic nanoparticles were able to evade the endosomal lumen and localise in the cytosol of treated cells. Consequently, DMAB coated PLGA nanoparticles loaded with a GFP reporter plasmid exhibited significant improvements in transfection efficiencies with comparison to non-modified particles, highlighting their functional usefulness. These nanoparticles may be useful in delivery of gene therapies to targeted cells. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

To study some of the interfacial properties of PtSi/Si diodes, Schottky structures were fabricated on (100) crystalline silicon substrates by conventional thermal evaporation of Pt on Si followed by annealing at different temperatures (from 400 degrees C to 700 degrees C) to form PtSi. The PtSi/n-Si diodes, all yielded Schottky barrier (SB) heights that are remarkably temperature dependent. The temperature range (20-290 K) over which the I-V characteristics were measured in the present study is broader with a much lower limit (20 K), than what is usually reported in literature. These variations in the barrier height are adequately interpreted by introducing spatial inhomogeneity into the barrier potential with a Gaussian distribution having a mean barrier of 0.76 eV and a standard deviation of 30 meV. Multi-frequency capacitance-voltage measurements suggest that the barrier is primarily controlled by the properties of the silicide-silicon interface. The forward C-V characteristics, in particular, show small peaks at low frequencies that can be ascribed to interface states rather than to a series resistance effect.

Scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) tip-induced light emission from Au and Ag has been studied. Thin film samples similar to100nm thick were prepared by thermal evaporation at 0.5nm/s onto a room-temperature glass substrate to produce grains of 20-50nm in lateral dimension at the surface. Light emission from the samples in the STM was quasi-simultaneously recorded with the topography, at 1.8V tip bias and 3-40nA current, alternating pixel by pixel at the same bias. Typically, a surface scan range of 150 nm x 150 nm was surveyed. Au, W and PtIr tips were used.

A narrow band proton bursts at energies of 1.6 +/- 0.08 MeV were observed when a water spray consisting of empty set(150 nm)-diameter droplets was irradiated by an ultrashort laser pulse of about 45 fs duration and at an intensity of 5 X 10(19) W/cm(2). The results are explained by a Coulomb explosion of sub-laser-wavelength droplets composed of two ion species. The laser prepulse plays an important role. By pre-evaporation of the droplets, its diameter is reduced so that the main pulse can interact with a smaller droplet, and this remaining bulk can be ionized to high states. In the case of water, the mixture of quite differently charged ions establishes an

Stable isotopes (delta O-18 and delta C-13) of lacustrine carbonates (Chara spp. algae and Pisidium spp. molluscs) from a lake sedimentary sequence in central Sweden were analysed to infer changes in lake hydrology and climate during the late Holocene. Results from analysis of lake water isotopes (delta O-18 and delta H-2) show that Lake Blektjarnen water isotope composition is responsive to the balance between evaporation and input water (E/l ratio). A high E/l ratio results from a dry and probably warmer climate, decreasing the relative importance of precipitation input. Under such conditions evaporation and atmospheric equilibration probably enrich lake water in O-18 and C-13, respectively, which is reflected in the isotopic composition of the carbonates in the lake. From the relatively positive Chara delta O-18 values we infer that conditions were dry and warm between 4400 and 4000 cal. a BP, whereas more negative values indicate that conditions were wetter and probably cooler between 4000 and 3000 cal. a BP. A drier climate is inferred from more positive values between 2500 and 1000 cal. a BP. However, a successive depletion after ca. 1750 cal. a BP, also detected in several other delta O-18 records (carbonate and diatom), suggest increasingly wetter conditions in Scandinavia after that time, which is probably related to increased strength of the zonal flow.

We compare the results of our JCMT spectral line survey of molecular gas towards ultracompact HII regions with the predictions of models of sulphur chemistry in hot cores. We investigate the range of evolutionary models that are consistent with the observed physical conditions and chemical abundances, and see to what extent it is possible to constrain core ages by comparing abundances with the predictions of chemical models. The observed abundance ratios vary little from source to source, suggesting that all the sources are at a similar evolutionary stage. The models are capable of predicting the observed abundances of H2S, SO, SO2, and CS. The models fail to predict the amount of OCS observed, suggesting that an alternative formation route is required. An initial H2S abundance from grain mantle evaporation of similar to 10(-7) is preferred.

Hot molecular cores in star-forming regions are known to have gas-phase chemical compositions determined by the evaporation of material from the icy mantles of interstellar grains, followed by subsequent reactions in the gas phase. Current models suggest that the evaporated material is rich in hydrogenated species, such as water, methane and methanol. In this paper, we report the detection of 14 rotational transitions of ethanol in the submillimetre spectrum of the molecular cloud associated with the ultra-compact H II region G34.3+0.15. We derive a rotation temperature of 125 K and a beam-averaged column density of 2.0x10(15) cm(-2), corresponding to a fractional abundance on the order of 4x10(-9). This large abundance, which is a lower limit due to the likelihood of beam dilution, cannot be made by purely gas-phase processes, and we conclude that the ethanol must be formed efficiently in the grain surface chemistry. Since it has been argued previously that methanol is formed via surface chemistry, it appears that alcohol formation may be a natural by-product of surface reactions.

Aims. We use high spatial and temporal resolution observations from the Swedish Solar Telescope to study the chromospheric velocities of a C-class flare originating from active region NOAA 10969.
Methods. A time-distance analysis is employed to estimate directional velocity components in Hα and Ca ii K image sequences. Also, imaging spectroscopy has allowed us to determine flare-induced line-of-sight velocities. A wavelet analysis is used to analyse the periodic nature of associated flare bursts.
Results. Time-distance analysis reveals velocities as high as 64 km s-1 along the flare ribbon and 15 km s-1 perpendicular to it. The velocities are very similar in both the Hα and Ca ii K time series. Line-of-sight Hα velocities are red-shifted with values up to 17 km s-1. The high spatial and temporal resolution of the observations have allowed us to detect velocities significantly higher than those found in earlier studies. Flare bursts with a periodicity of ≈60 s are also detected. These bursts are similar to the quasi-periodic oscillations observed at hard X-ray and radio wavelength data.
Conclusions. Some of the highest velocities detected in the solar atmosphere are presented. Line-of-sight velocity maps show considerable mixing of both the magnitude and direction of velocities along the flare path. A change in direction of the velocities at the flare kernel has also been detected which may be a signature of chromospheric evaporation.

The article highlights new insights into production of thin titania films widely used as catalyst support in many modern reactors including capillary microreactors, microstructured fixed-bed reactors and falling film microreactors. Dip-coating of a Mania sol onto a Si substrate has been studied in the range of the sol viscosities of 1.5-2.5 mPa s and the sol withdrawal rates of 0.2-18 mm/s. Different viscosities of sols were created by addition of desired amounts of nitric acid to the synthesis mixture of titanium isopropoxide and Plutonic F127 in ethanol which allowed to control the rate of the condensation reactions. Uniform inesoporous titania coatings were obtained at the solvent withdrawal rates below 10 mm/s at sol viscosities in the range from 1.6 mPa s to 2.5 mPa s. There exists a limiting withdrawal rate corresponding to a capillary number of ca. 0.01 beyond which uniform titania films cannot be obtained. Below the limiting withdrawal rate, the coating thickness is a power function of the sol viscosity and withdrawal rate, both with an exponent of 2/3. The limiting withdrawal rate increases as the solvent evaporation rate increases and it decreases as the sol viscosity increases. Crown Copyright (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V. A one-pot sol-gel synthesis method has been developed for the incorporation of metal nanoparticles into mesoporous oxide thin films deposited on various plane substrates by spin-coating and on the inner surface of fused silica capillaries by dip-coating. The size, the metal loading and the stoichiometry of the metal nanoparticles could be precisely controlled by following this methodology. In the first step, polymer stabilized Pt50Sn50 and Pt90Sn10 nanoparticles were obtained by a solvent-reduction method. Then, the nanoparticles were added to a metal oxide precursor sol, which was destabilized by solvent evaporation. After calcination, the obtained materials were tested in the hydrogenation of citral in both batch and continuous modes. The highest selectivity of 30% towards the unsaturated alcohols was obtained over supported Pt90Sn10 nanoparticles with a preferential formation of the cis-isomer (nerol) due to a unique confinement of the bimetallic nanoparticles in the mesoporous framework. The selectivity towards the unsaturated alcohols was further improved to 56% over the PtRu5Sn nanoparticles supported by impregnation onto mesoporous silica films. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. The desorption of oligonucleotides by 3 mu m laser irradiation has been studied by laser induced fluorescence imaging of the resulting gas phase plumes. Fitting of the plume data has been achieved by using a modified Maxwell Boltzmann distribution which incorporates a range of stream velocities. Spatial density profiles, velocities and temperature variation have been determined from these fits indicating that the oligonucleotide plume only achieves a partial thermal relaxation. This laser desorption technique may provide a means of overcoming the limited mass range of gas phase biomolecules available from thermal evaporation techniques.

This study reports the effects of: the molecular weight ratio of poly(epsilon -caprolactone) (PCL) in blends containing polymer of high (50 000 g mol(-1)) and low (4000 g mol(-1)) molecular weight; the concentration (0, 1, and 5 wt-%) of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone/iodine) (PVP/I); and storage at 30 degreesC and 75% relative humidity; on the thermomechanical properties of films prepared by solvent evaporation from solutions containing both PCL and PVP/I. The tensile properties were found to be statistically dependent on the molecular weight ratio of PCL but not on the concentration of PVP/I. The reductions in tensile strength and elongation at break associated with increasing amounts of low molecular weight PCL were attributed to a reduction in the concentration of chain entanglements. No changes were observed in viscoelastic properties or the glass transition temperature. Following storage there were no changes in the tensile strength, glass transition temperature, or viscoelastic properties of the films; however, significant reductions in elongation at break were observed. It is suggested that this is due to hydrolytic chain scission of amorphous PCL. Inclusion of 5 wt-% PVP/I increased this process in films containing 100:0 and 80:20 high/low molecular weight PCL (but not 60.40), but the extent of this was small. This study highlighted significant aging properties of PCL in a moist atmosphere. Consequently, it is recommended that suitable packaging materials should be employed to control the exposure of PCL films to water during storage.

Time-resolved optical absorption spectroscopy techniques were used to study Ba, metastable Ba+, and YO absorptions in the laser-produced plasma plume from a YBa2Cu3O7 target. Results obtained indicate an initial explosive removal of material from the target sur-face followed by a subsequent evaporation process. Some YO is ejected from the target in molecular form, particularly at laser fluence
