Effective collision strengths for transitions among the lowest 97 fine-structure levels belonging to the (1s(2)2s(2)2p(6)) 3s(2)3p(2), 3s3p(3), 3s(2)3p3d, 3p(4), 3s3p(2)3d and 3s(2)3d(2) configurations of Fe XIII have been calculated using the fully relativistic Dirac Atomic R-matrix Code (DARC) of Norrington & Grant (2004). Resonances have been resolved in the threshold region, and results are reported over a wide electron temperature range up to log T-e = 6.8 K. Comparisons are made with the earlier available R-matrix results of Gupta & Tayal (1998), and the accuracy of the data is assessed.

Collision strengths for 4005 transitions among the lowest 90 levels of the (1s(2)2s(2)2p(6)) 3s(2)3p(5), 3s3p(6), 3s(2)3p(4)3d, 3s3p(5)3d and 3s(2)3p(3)3d(2) configurations of Fe X have been calculated using the Dirac Atomic R-matrix Code (DARC) of Norrington & Grant, over a wide energy range up to 210 Ryd. Resonances have been resolved in the threshold region, and effective collision strengths have been obtained over a wide temperature range up to 107 K. The present calculations should represent a significant improvement ( in both range and accuracy) over the earlier available results of Bhatia & Doschek and Pelan & Berrington. Based on several comparisons, the accuracy of our data is assessed to be better than 20%, for a majority of transitions.

Collision strengths for transitions among the lowest 48 fine- structure levels belonging to the (1s(2)2s(2)2p(6)) 3s(2)3p(4), 3s3p(5), 3s(2)3p(3)3d and 3p(6) configurations of Fe XI have been calculated using the Dirac Atomic R-matrix Code (DARC) of Norrington & Grant (2003). Results are tabulated at energies above thresholds in the range 10 less than or equal to E less than or equal to 100 Ry, although resonances have been resolved in a fine energy mesh in the thresholds region. Effective collision strengths, obtained after integrating the collision strengths over a Maxwellian distribution of electron velocities, are also tabulated over a wide electron temperature range below 5 x 10(6) K. Comparisons with other available results are made, and the accuracy of the present data is assessed.

Effective collision strengths for transitions among the energetically lowest 46 fine-structure levels belonging to the (1s(2)) 2S(2) 2p(2), 2s2p(3), 2p(4), 2S(2)2p3s, 2s(2)2p3p and 2S(2)2p3d configurations of Fe XXI are computed, over an electron temperature range of 5.6 less than or equal to log T-e less than or equal to 7.4 K, using the recent Dirac Atomic R- matrix Code (DARC) of Norrington and Grant. Results are presented for transitions within the ground configuration only, and are compared with earlier R matrix calculations. Large discrepancies are observed for many transitions, especially at lower temperatures.

Collision strengths for transitions among the energetically lowest 53 fine-structure levels belonging to the (1s(2)2s(2)2p(6)) 3l(2), 3l3l', 3s4l and 3p4s configurations of Fe XV are computed, over an electron energy range below 160 Ryd, using the Dirac Atomic R-matrix Code (DARC) of Norrington & Grant (2003). Effective collision strengths, obtained after integrating the collision strengths over a Maxwellian distribution of electron energies, have also been calculated. These results of effective collision strengths are tabulated for all 1378 inelastic transitions over a wide temperature range of 10(5) to 10(7) K. Comparisons are also made with other R-matrix calculations and the accuracy of the results is assessed.

Effective collision strengths for transitions among the ten energetically lowest fine-structure levels belonging to the (1s(2)2s(2)2p(6))3s(2), 3s3p and 3p(2) configurations of Fe xv have been calculated in the electron temperature range of 10(5)-10(7) K, using the recent Dirac atomic R-matrix code of Norrington and Grant. The results are compared with the other recently available independent Breit-Pauli R-matrix calculations of Eissner et al (Eissner W, Galavis M E, Mendoza C and Zeippen C J 1999 Astron. Astrophys. Suppl. 137 165) and Griffin et al (Griffin DC, Badnell N R, Pindzola M S and Shaw J A 1999 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 32 2139, 4129). Large differences are observed for many transitions over almost the entire temperature range. These differences are analysed and discussed, and the accuracy of the calculations is assessed.

The prediction of molar volumes and densities of several ionic liquids has been achieved using a group contribution model as a function of temperature between (273 and 423) K at atmospheric pressure. It was observed that the calculation of molar volumes or densities could be performed using the "ideal" behavior of the molar volumes of mixtures of ionic liquids. This model is based on the observations of Canongia Lopes et al. (J. Phys. Chem. B 2005, 109, 3519-3525) which showed that this ideal behavior is independent of the temperature and allows the molar volume of a given ionic liquid to be calculated by the sum of the effective molar volume of the component ions. Using this assumption, the effective molar volumes of ions constituting more than 220 different ionic liquids were calculated as a function of the temperature at 0.1 MPa using more than 2150 data points. These calculated results were used to build up a group contribution model for the calculation of ionic liquid molar volumes and densities with an estimated repeatability and uncertainty of 0.36% and 0.48%, respectively. The impact of impurities (water and halide content) in ionic liquids as well as the method of determination were also analyzed and quantified to estimate the overall uncertainty. © 2008 American Chemical Society.

Measurements on the diffusion coefficient of the neutral molecule N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-para-phenylenediamine and the radical cation and dication generated by its one- and two-electron oxidation, respectively, are reported over the range 298-348 K in both acetonitrile and four room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). Data were collected using single and double potential step chronamperometry at a gold disk electrode of micrometer dimension, and analysed via fitting to the appropriate analytical expression or, where necessary, to simulation. The variation of diffusion coefficient with temperature was found to occur in an Arrhenius-type manner for all combinations of solute and solvent. For a given ionic liquid, the diffusional activation energies of each species were not only closely equivalent to each other, but also to the RTIL's activation energy of viscous flow. In acetonitrile supported with 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate, the ratio in diffusion coefficients of the radial cation and dication tot he neutral molecule were calculated as 0.89 +/- 0.05 and 0.51 +/- 0.03, respectively. In contrast, amongst the ionic liquids the same ratios were determined to be on average 0.53 +/- 0.04 and 0.33 +/- 0.03. The consequences of this dissimilarity are considered in terms of the modelling of voltammetric data gathered within ionic liquid solvents.

Aims. In this paper we report electron impact collision strengths and excitation rates for transitions among the lowest 89 levels of Ni XIX.
Methods. The Dirac atomic R-matrix code (DARC) is adopted for the calculations of collision strengths and subsequently the effective collision strengths.
Results. Collision strengths for resonance transitions among 89 levels arising from the (1s2) 2s22p6, 2s22p53$\ell$, 2s2p63$\ell$, 2s22p54$\ell$, and 2s2p64$\ell$ configurations of Ni XIX are reported over a wide energy range below 250 Ryd. Additionally, effective collision strengths for all 3916 transitions among the 89 levels are listed over a wide temperature range below 107 K. Comparisons are made among different calculations and the accuracy of the data is assessed. Finally, comparisons between theoretical and experimental intensity ratios of some prominent lines of Ni XIX are discussed.

Context. Electron-impact excitation collision strengths are required for the analysis and interpretation of stellar observations.
Aims. This calculation aims to provide effective collision strengths for the Mg V ion for a larger number of transitions and for a greater temperature range than previously available, using collision strength data that include contributions from resonances.
Methods. A 19-state Breit-Pauli R-matrix calculation was performed. The target states are represented by configuration interaction wavefunctions and consist of the 19 lowest LS states, having configurations 2s22p4, 2s2p5, 2p6, 2s22p33s, and 2s22p33p. These target states give rise to 37 fine-structure levels and 666 possible transitions. The effective collision strengths were calculated by averaging the electron collision strengths over a Maxwellian distribution of electron velocities.
Results. The non-zero effective collision strengths for transitions between the fine-structure levels are given for electron temperatures in the range = 3.0 - 7.0. Data for transitions among the 5 fine-structure levels arising from the 2s22p4 ground state configurations, seen in the UV range, are discussed in the paper, along with transitions in the EUV range – transitions from the ground state 3P levels to 2s2p5?3P levels. The 2s22p4?1D–2s2p5?1P transition is also noted. Data for the remaining transitions are available at the CDS.

A real-time VHF swept frequency (20–300 MHz) reflectometry measurement for radio-frequency capacitive-coupled atmospheric pressure plasmas is described. The measurement is scalar, non-invasive and deployed on the main power line of the plasma chamber. The purpose of this VHF signal injection is to remotely interrogate in real-time the frequency reflection properties of plasma. The information obtained is used for remote monitoring of high-value atmospheric plasma processing. Measurements are performed under varying gas feed (helium mixed with 0–2% oxygen) and power conditions (0–40 W) on two contrasting reactors. The first is a classical parallel-plate chamber driven at 16 MHz with well-defined electrical grounding but limited optical access and the second is a cross-field plasma jet driven at 13.56 MHz with open optical access but with poor electrical shielding of the driven electrode. The electrical measurements are modelled using a lumped element electrical circuit to provide an estimate of power dissipated in the plasma as a function of gas and applied power. The performances of both reactors are evaluated against each other. The scalar measurements reveal that 0.1% oxygen admixture in helium plasma can be detected. The equivalent electrical model indicates that the current density between the parallel-plate reactor is of the order of 8–20 mA cm-2 . This value is in accord with 0.03 A cm-2 values reported by Park et al (2001 J. Appl. Phys. 89 20–8). The current density of the cross-field plasma jet electrodes is found to be 20 times higher. When the cross-field plasma jet unshielded electrode area is factored into the current density estimation, the resultant current density agrees with the parallel-plate reactor. This indicates that the unshielded reactor radiates electromagnetic energy into free space and so acts as a plasma antenna.

The a-b plane dielectric function (epsilon) of c-axis YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films with T-c > 85 K was measured at lambda = 3.392 mum in the temperature range 85-300 It, using an attenuated total reflectance (ATR) technique based on the excitation of surface plasmons, The results show that \epsilon (r)\ decreases quasi-linearly with increasing temperature, while Ei is invariant to temperature within experimental uncertainties. Typical values are epsilon (ab) = -23 + 16.5i at similar to 295 R and epsilon (ab) = -27 + 15.5i at similar to 90 K. A generalised Drude analysis yields effective scattering rates (1/tau*) that increase with temperature from similar to 1500 to similar to 1900 cm(-1). The temperature dependent rates best fit an equation of the form 1/tau* = a + bT(alpha) with alpha = 1.46 +/- 0.40. The effective plasma frequencies of w(p)* similar to 18,500 cm(-1) are almost independent of temperature. The uniquely detailed temperature dependence of the results confirm and consolidate data obtained by other groups using normal reflectance methods, but contradict our previously published ATR measurements. An electrochemical double layer capacitor test cell containing activated carbon xerogel electrodes and ionic liquid electrolyte was tested at 15, 25 and 40 OC to examine the effect of temperature on electrolyte resistance (RS) and equivalent series resistance (ESR) measured using impedance spectroscopy and capacitance using charge/discharge cycling. A commercial 10F capacitor was used as a comparison. Viscosity, ionic self-diffusion coefficients and differential scanning calorimetry measurements were used to provide an insight into the behaviour of the 1,2-dimethyl-3-propylimdazolium electrolyte. Both RS and ESR decreased with increasing temperature for both capacitors. Increasing the temperature also increased the capacitance for both the test cell and the commercial capacitor but proportionally more for the test cell. An increase in temperature decreased the ionic liquid electrolyte viscosity and increased the self diffusion coefficients of both the anion and the cation indicating an increase in dissociation and increase in ionic mobility.

The mechanical response of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) in elongation is strongly dependent on temperature, strain and strain rate. Near the glass transition temperature Tg, the stress-strain curve presents a strain softening effect vs strain rate but a strain hardening effect vs strain under conditions of large deformations. The main goal of this work is to propose a viscoelastic model to predict the PET behaviour when subjected to large deformations and to determine the material properties from the experimental data. To represent the non–linear effects, an elastic part depending on the elastic equivalent strain and a non-Newtonian viscous part depending on both viscous equivalent strain rate and cumulated viscous strain are tested. The model parameters can then be accurately obtained trough a comparison with the experimental uniaxial and biaxial tests. The in?uence of the temperature on the viscous part is also modelled and an evaluation of the adiabatic self heating of the specimen is compared to experimental results.

The Coulomb–Born approximation is used to calculate electron-impact excitation collision strengths and effective collision strengths for optically allowed transitions among degenerate fine-structure levels of hydrogenic ions with 2⩽Z⩽30 and n⩽5. Collision strengths are calculated over a wide range of energies up to View the MathML source. Effective collision strengths are obtained over a wide temperature range up to View the MathML source by integrating the collision strengths over a Maxwellian distribution of electron velocities.
