A side-fed bifilar helix antenna can be integrated with a quadrifilar helix antenna in a piggy back configuration in order to achieve a dual-mode radiating structure. The overall length of the structure is 0.44 lambda at the resonant frequency (1.54 GHz) of the space mode antenna and 0.39 lambda at the resonant frequency (1.34 GHz) of the terrestrial mode antenna. The computed results are validated by experimental data.

The reflection phase response of a two-layer array of orthogonally oriented concentric split rings is presented. Splitting the ring elements suppresses the interlayer coupling and produces polarisation sensitive scattering. Simulated and measured results at X-band demonstrate that these proper-ties enable the reflection phase coefficients of a reflect-array to be independently optimised at two different frequencies.

In this article we propose a technique for dual-band Class-E power amplifier design using composite right/left-handed transmission lines, CRLH TLs. Design equations are presented and design procedures are elaborated. Because of the nonlinear phase dispersion characteristic of CRLH TLs, the single previous attempt at applying this method to dual bond Class-E amplifier design was not sufficient to simultaneously satisfy, the minimum requirement of Class-E impedances at both the fundamental and the second harmonic frequencies. This article rectifies this situation. A design example illustrating the synthesis procedure for a 0.5W-5V dual band Class-E amplifier circuit simultaneously operated at 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz is given and compared with ADS simulation.

High-cadence, synchronized, multiwavelength optical observations of a solar active region (NOAA 10794) are presented. The data were obtained with the Dunn Solar Telescope at the National Solar Observatory/Sacramento Peak using a newly developed camera system: the rapid dual imager. Wavelet analysis is undertaken to search for intensity related oscillatory signatures, and periodicities ranging from 20 to 370 s are found with significance levels exceeding 95%. Observations in the H-α blue wing show more penumbral oscillatory phenomena when compared to simultaneous G-band observations. The H-α oscillations are interpreted as the signatures of plasma motions with a mean velocity of 20 km s-1. The strong oscillatory power over H-α blue-wing and G-band penumbral bright grains is an indication of the Evershed flow with frequencies higher than previously reported.

Lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) is a key enzyme involved in lipoprotein metabolism. It mediates the transesterification of free cholesterol to cholesteryl ester in an apoprotein A-I-dependent process. We have isolated purified LCAT from human plasma using anion-exchange chromatography and characterized the extracted LCAT in terms of its molecular weight, molar absorption coefficient, and enzymatic activity. The participation of LCAT in the oxidation of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) was examined by supplementing lipoproteins with exogenous LCAT over a range of protein concentrations. LCAT-depleted lipoproteins were also prepared and their oxidation kinetics examined. Our results provide evidence for a dual role for LCAT in lipoprotein oxidation, whereby it acts in a dose-responsive manner as a potent pro-oxidant during VLDL oxidation, but as an antioxidant during LDL oxidation. We believe this novel pro-oxidant effect may be attributable to the LCAT-mediated formation of oxidized cholesteryl ester in VLDL, whereas the antioxidant effect is similar to that of chain-breaking antioxidants. Thus, we have demonstrated that the high-density lipoprotein-associated enzyme LCAT may have a significant role to play in lipoprotein modification and hence atherogenesis. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. Studies examining dual adaptation to opposing novel environments have yielded contradictory results, with previous evidence supporting both successful dual adaptation and interference leading to poorer adaptive performance. Whether or not interference is observed during dual adaptation appears to be dependent on the method used to allow the performer of the task to distinguish between two novel environments. This experiment tested if colour cues, a separation in workspace, and presentation schedule, could be used to distinguish between two opposing visuomotor rotations and enable dual adaptation. Through the use of a purpose designed manipulandum, each visuomotor rotation was either presented in the same region of workspace and associated with colour cues (Group 1), different regions of workspace in addition to colour cues (Groups 2 and 3) or different regions of workspace only (Groups 4 and 5). We also assessed the effectiveness of the workspace separation with both randomised and alternating presentation schedules (Groups 4 and 5). The results indicated that colour cues were not effective at enabling dual adaptation when each of the visuomotor rotations was associated with the same region of workspace. When associated with different regions of workspace, however, dual adaptation to the opposing rotations was successful regardless of whether colour cues were present or the type of presentation schedule.

A pin diode-loaded active doubly periodic flat strip FSS is shown to act as a dynamic screen. It is shown that by means of d.c. bias control, we can utilize the screen in, (1) transmission mode as a dual band electromagnetic shutter, or with the inclusion of a ground plane in reflection mode, (is (2) it dual band refection canceller. (3) an amplitude shift keying (ASK) spatial modulator. The properties of the FSS are characterized using a specially designed parallel plate waveguide simulator that permits normal incidence excitation of the FSS under test. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals. A method for producing a retrodirective (self-tracking) antenna, which can also be operated as a phased (selectively pointed) array through the addition of a simple switching circuit and DC bias offset adjustment, is presented. Phase adjustment to individual antenna elements is shown to be readily carried out by a simple frequency pushing technique, applied to a PLL circuit, thus replacing the requirement for additional phase shifters. Practical results when applied to a ten-element array operating at 2.4 GHz are shown for both modes of operation.

The design, construction and measured performance is described of an offset parabolic reflector antenna which employs a reflectarray subreflector to tilt the focused beam from the boresight direction at 94 GHz. An analysis technique based on the method of moments (MoM) is used to design the dual-reflector antenna. Numerical simulations were employed to demonstrate that the high gain pattern of the antenna can be tilted to a predetermined angle by introducing a progressive phase shift across the aperture of the reflectarray. Experimental validation of the approach was made by constructing a 28 × 28 element patch reflectarray which was designed to deflect the beam 5° from the boresight direction in the azimuth plane. The array was printed on a 115 µm thick metal backed quartz wafer and the radiation patterns of the dual reflector antenna were measured from 92.6-95.5 GHz. The experimental results are used to validate the analysis technique by comparing the radiation patterns and the reduction in the peak gain due to beam deflection from the boresight direction. Moreover the results demonstrate that this design concept can be developed further to create an electronically scanned dual reflector antenna by using a tunable reflectarray subreflector.

Performing two tasks simultaneously often degrades performance of one or both tasks. While this dual-task interference is classically interpreted in terms of shared attentional resources, where two motor tasks are performed simultaneously interactions within primary motor cortex (i.e., activity-dependent coupling) may also be a contributing factor. In the present study TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) was used to examine the contribution of activity-dependent coupling to dual-task interference during concurrent performance of a bimanual coordination task and a discrete probe reaction time (RT) task involving the foot. Experiments 1 and 2 revealed that activity-dependent coupling within the leg corticomotor pathway was greater during dual-task performance than single-task performance, and this was associated with interference on the probe RT task (i.e., increased RT). Experiment 3 revealed that dual-task interference occurred regardless of whether the dual-task involved two motor tasks or a motor and cognitive task, however activity-dependent coupling was present only when a dual motor task was performed. This suggests that activity-dependent coupling is less detrimental to performance than attentional processes operating upstream of the corticomotor system. Finally, while prioritising the RT task reduced, but did not eliminate, dual-task interference the contribution of activity-dependent coupling to dual-task interference was not affected by task prioritisation. This suggests that although activity-dependent coupling may contribute to dual motor-task interference, attentional processes appear to be more important. It also suggests that activity-dependent coupling may not be subject to modulation by attentional processes. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
