Transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) has been used to study the interfacial electron-transfer reaction between photogenerated electrons in nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) films and molecular oxygen. TiO2 films from three different starting materials (TiO2 anatase colloidal paste and commercial anatase/rutile powders Degussa TiO2 P25 and VP TiO2 P90) have been investigated in the presence of ethanol as a hole scavenger. Separate investigations on the photocatalytic oxygen consumption by the films have also been performed with an oxygen membrane polarographic detector. Results show that a correlation exists between the electron dynamics of oxygen consumption observed by TAS and the rate of oxygen consumption through the photocatalytic process. The highest activity and the fastest oxygen reduction dynamics were observed with films fabricated from anatase TiO2 colloidal paste. The use of TAS as a tool for the prediction of the photocatalytic activities of the materials is discussed. TAS studies indicate that the rate of reduction of molecular oxygen is limited by interfacial electron-transfer kinetics rather than by the electron trapping/detrapping dynamics within the TiO2 particles.

The initial kinetics of the oxidation of 4-chlorophenol, 4-CP, photocatalyzed by titania films and aqueous dispersions were studied as a function of oxygen partial pressure, P-O2, and incident light intensity, I. The reaction conditions were such that the kinetics were independent of [4-CP] but strongly dependent on PO2-a situation that allowed investigation of the less-often studied kinetics of oxygen reduction. The observed kinetics fit a pseudo-steady-state model in which the oxygen is Langmuir-adsorbed on the titania photocatalyst particles before being reduced by photogenerated electrons. The maximum rate of photocatalysis depends directly on I-beta, where, beta = 1 for films and 0.7 for dispersions of titania, indicating that the kinetics are dominated by the surface reactions of the photogenerated electrons and holes for the films and by direct recombination for the powder dispersions. Using the pseudo-first-order model, for both titania films and dispersions, the apparent Langmuir adsorption constant, K-LH, derived from a Langmuir-Hinshelwood analysis of the kinetics, appears to be largely independent of incident light intensity, unlike KLH for 4-CP Consequently, similar values are obtained for the Langmuir adsorption constant, K-ads, extracted from a pseudosteady-state analysis of the kinetics for oxygen on TiO2 dispersions and films in aqueous solution (i.e., ca. 0.0265 +/- 0.005 kPa(-1)), and for both films and dispersions, oxygen appears to be weakly adsorbed on TiO2 compared with 4-CP, at a rate that would take many minutes to reach equilibrium. The value of Kads for oxygen on titania particles dispersed in solution is ca. 4.7 times lower than that reported for the dark Langmuir adsorption isotherm; possible causes for this difference are discussed. The results of a kinetic study of the oxidation of water to oxygen by Ce(IV) ions in different acid media, mediated by anhydrous ruthenium(IV) oxide are described. In an acid medium which is predominantly HClO4 the kinetics are diffusion controlled and first order with respect to both [Ce(IV)] and [RuO2] and exhibit an activation energy of 19 kJ mol-1. In 0.5 mol dm-3 H2SO4 the kinetics are much slower and complex, the rate decreasing with increasing [Ce(III)]. The kinetics of catalysis observed in all the different acid media studied are readily interpreted using an electrochemical model in which the catalyst particles are considered as acting as microelectrodes which mediate electron transfer between a Nernstian reduction reaction (Ce(IV) --> Ce(III)) and an irreversible oxidation reaction (H2O --> 2H+ + 1/2O2). This electrochemical model is used to analyse the complex kinetics observed in 0.5 mol dm-3 H2SO4 and extract mechanistic information concerning the nature of the rate determining step.

Self-potential and spectral induced polarization responses associated with microbial processes involved in sulphate reduction have been monitored in a Perspex Winogradsky column filled with glass beads and growth medium. Salt-bridge is utilized as an electrolytic contact between experiment and control column. Equally spaced SP electrodes are used in combination of Ag-AgCl electrodes to compare electrodic and SP signals associated with the microbial processes involved in sulphate reduction. This study reveals that magnitude of SP varies from 5 to -2 mV and Electrodic potential 0 to -20 mV at the time of domination (day 39) of sulphate reducing bacteria which are very small in comparison to those measured by fixing both measuring and reference Ag-AgCl electrodes in experiment column. We observed that real and imaginary parts of complex conductivities increase with increase in production of H2S and CO in the experiment column. Both real and imaginary parts of surface complex conductivity vary at low frequencies similar to typical growth curve of bacterial population. Sodium lactate as a carbon source, dissolved in Lagan River water was flushed into the column for biostimulation on 144th day. The dissolved oxygen in flushed fluid might have killed the anaerobes in the column and decrease in complex conductivities similar to death phase of bacteria is observed for one week. The results obtained from this experiment should contribute to further understanding the biogeophysical responses involved in complex environments.

The role of sodium surface species in the modification of a platinum (Pt) catalyst film supported on 8 mol% yttria-stabilised-zirconia (YSZ) was investigated under a flow of 20 kPa oxygen at 400 °C. Cyclic and linear sweep voltammetry were used to investigate the kinetics of the oxygen charge transfer reaction. The Pt/YSZ systems of both ‘clean’ and variable-coverage sodium-modified catalyst surfaces were also characterised using SEM, XPS and work function measurements using the Kelvin probe technique.

Samples with sodium coverage from 0.5 to 100% were used. It was found that sodium addition modifies the binding energy of oxygen onto the catalyst surface. Cyclic voltammetry experiments showed that higher overpotentials were required for oxygen reduction with increasing sodium coverage. In addition, sodium was found to modify oxygen storage and/or adsorption and diffusion increasing current densities at higher cathodic overpotential. Ex situ XPS measurements showed the presence of sodium hydroxide, carbonate and/or oxide species on the catalyst surface, while the Kelvin probe technique showed a decrease of approximately 250 meV in the work function of samples with more than 50% sodium coverage (compared to a nominally ‘clean’ sample).

Catalysts currently employed for the polymerization of ethylene have previously been found to deactivate in the presence of oxygen. It is, therefore, important that oxygen is removed from the ethylene feedstock prior to the polymerization. The Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst exhibits excellent activity and selectivity toward oxygen reduction with hydrogen in the presence of ethylene. TAP vacuum pulse experiments have been utilised to understand the catalytic behaviour of the Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. TAP multi-pulse experiments have determined the types of active sites that are found on the Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst, and the intrinsic activity of these sites. The lifetime of the reactive adsorbed oxygen intermediate has also been determined through TAP consecutive pulse experiments. Multi-pulse and consecutive pulse data have been combined with ethylene adsorption/desorption rate constants to provide an overview of the Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst system.

This paper reports on the solubility and diffusivity of dissolved oxygen in a series of ionic liquids (ILs) based on the bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide anion with a range of related alkyl and ether functionalised cyclic alkylammonium cations. Cyclic voltammetry has been used to observe the reduction of oxygen in ILs at a microdisk electrode and chronoamperometric measurements have then been applied to simultaneously determine both the concentration and the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in the different ILs. The viscosity of the ILs and the calculated molar volume and free volume is also reported. It is found that, within this class of ILs, the oxygen diffusivity generally increases with decreasing viscosity of the neat IL. An inverse relationship between oxygen solubility and IL free volume is reported for the two IL families implying oxygen is not simply occupying the available empty space. In addition, it is reported that the introduction of ether-group into the IL cation structure promotes the diffusivity of dissolved oxygen but reduces the solubility of the gas.

The initial rate of the photocatalysed oxidation of methylene blue, MB, by dissolved oxygen in solution, ri(MB), is measured for a series of titania on glass samples exhibiting a wide range of activities.  The samples used include two different types of commercial self-cleaning glass and a lab-made sol-geltitania film.  The activities of these samples are also assessed using a resazurin-based photocatalyst activity indicator ink, i.e. Rz paii, for which the initial rates of the photocatalysed reduction of Rz were measured, ri(Rz).  A plot of ri(MB)vs. ri(Rz) reveals a goodstraight line, thereby demonstrating a linear correlation (for TiO2films on glass at least) between the slow (usually hours) photocatalysed oxidation of organic materials, such as MB, and the fast (typically minutes) photocatalysed irreversible reduction of a dye, like Rz, in a paii.  The possible use of paii technology for assessing, in a simple, quick and inexpensive manner, photocatalytic films both in the laboratory and in situ is discussed briefly.

Robust thin-film oxygen sensors were fabricated by encapsulating a lipophilic, polynuclear gold(I) complex, bis{m-(bis(diphenylphosphino)octadecylamine-P,P')}dichlorodigold(I), in oxygen permeable polystyrene and ormosil matrices. Strong phosphorescence, which was quenched by gaseous and dissolved oxygen, was observed from both matrices. The polystyrene encapsulated dye exhibited downward-turning Stern-Volmer plots which were well fitted by a two-site model. The ormosil trapped complex showed linear Stern-Volmer plots for dissolved oxygen quenching but was downward turning for gaseous oxygen. No leaching was observed when the ormosil based sensors were immersed in flowing water over an 8 h period. Both films exhibited fully reversible response and recovery to changing oxygen concentration with rapid response times. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The photobleaching of methylene blue MB, sensitised by TiO2, in an aqueous solution is studied in the absence and presence of oxygen, in the absence of oxygen and in the presence of a sacrificial electron acceptor (SED), MB is photoreduced to its colourless leuco form, LMB, by the TiO2 photocatalyst. This same photoreduction process is observed even if an SED is not present, indicating that MB itself can act as an SED. The oxidation of LMB by oxygen to regenerate MB is significantly slower if the aqueous solution is acidified (0.01 mol dm(-3) HClO4) and, at low partial pressures, the rate of reaction depends directly upon the concentration of dissolved oxygen. The TiO2-sensitised photobleaching of MB is irreversible in an oxygen-saturated aqueous solution, as expected, since the bleaching was due to an oxidative process. However, in an acidified solution (0.01 mol dm(-3) HClO4), the photobleaching process, in an oxygen-saturated solution, generates LMB initially. The latter situation arises because, under acidic conditions, LMB reacts only very slowly with oxygen to form MB. The significance of these findings with respect to the popular use of photobleaching of MB as a demonstration of semiconductor photomineralisation is discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. The kinetics of reduction of hexacyanoferrate(III) by excess thiosulfate, mediated by RuO2.xH2O, are investigated. At high concentrations of S2O32- (0.1 mol dm-3) the kinetics of Fe(CN)63- reduction are first order with respect to [Fe(CN)63-] and [RuO2.xH2O] and independent of [Fe(CN)64-], [S2O32-] and [S4O62-]. At relatively low concentrations Of S2O32- (0.01 mol dm-3) and in the presence of appreciable concentrations of Fe(CN)64- and S4O62- (0.01 mol dm-3) the kinetics depend directly upon [Fe(CN)63-] and [RuO2.xH2O] and inversely upon [Fe(CN)64-]. Both sets of kinetics can be rationalised using an electrochemical model of redox catalysts in which a reversible reduction reaction [Fe(CN)63- + e- --> Fe(CN)64-] is coupled to an irreversible oxidation reaction (s2O32- - e- --> 1/2S4O62-), by a dispersion of RuO2.xH2O microelectrodes. At high concentrations Of S2O32- this model predicts that the kinetics of Fe(CN)63- reduction are controlled by the rate of diffusion of the Fe(CN)63- ions to the RuO2.xH2O particles. The kinetics observed at low concentrations of S2O32- are predicted by the electrochemical model, assuming that the Tafel slope for the oxidation Of S2O32- to S4O62- on the RuO2.xH2O particles is 56.4 mV decade-1.

The results of a kinetic study of the bleaching of the photostable dye rhodamine 6G by dissolved oxygen, photosensitized by TiO2, are reported. The observed variations in the initial rate of dye photobleaching as a function of the O2 percentage, temperature, incident light intensity and concentrations of rhodamine 6G and sacrificial electron donor are described and the results are rationalized using a proposed photochemical reaction scheme. The photosensitized bleaching of rhodamine 6G dye by TiO2 has a formal quantum yield of 2.65 X 10(-3), but the rate of complete photomineralization is about twofold slower. The overall activation energy for the semiconductor-sensitized dye photobleaching process is 15.0 +/- 1.5 kJ mol-1.

The kinetics of photoreduction of methyl orange by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) sensitized by colloidal CdS are reported as a function of [methyl orange], [O2] and [EDTA]. The results are interpreted using a reaction scheme which was proposed in an earlier paper for the same reaction sensitized by a powdered dispersion of highly crystalline CdS. An analysis of the results for the CdS colloid based on this reaction scheme shows that the rate of dye reduction by photogenerated electrons is approximately 50 times greater than the rate of oxygen reduction and the rate of scavenging of the photogenerated holes is approximately 7000 times greater than the rate of recombination. These findings are discussed in the light of similar observations reported for powdered CdS.

A study was conducted to investigate the sediment health and water quality of the River Sagana, Kenya, as impacted by the local tanning industry. Chemical analysis identified the main chemical pollutants (pentachlorophenols and chromium) while a bioassay addressed pollutant bioavailability. The bioassay, exploiting the luminescence response of a lux marked bacterial biosensor, was coupled to a dehydrogenase and Dapnia magna test to determine toxicity effects on sediments. Results highlighted the toxicity of the tannery effluent to the sediments at the point of discharge (64% of control bioluminescence) with gradual improvement downstream. There was a significant increase in dehydrogenase downstream, with the enzyme activity attaining a peak at 600 m, also indicating a gradual reduction of toxicity. Biological oxygen demand (19.56 mg L(-1)) dissolved oxygen (3.97 mg L(-1)) and high lethal dose value (85%) of D. magna also confirmed an initial stress at the point of discharge and recovery downstream. Optical density of surface water demonstrated an increase in suspended particulates and colour after the discharge point, eventually decreasing beyond 400 m. In conclusion, the study highlighted the importance of understanding the biogeochemistry of river systems impacted by industries discharging effluent into them and the invaluable role of a biosensor-based ecotoxicological approach to address effluent hazards, particularly in relation to river sediments.

Spatial variability of bias-dependent electrochemical processes on a (La0.5Sr0.5)(2)CoO4 +/- modified (LaxSr1-x)CoO3- surface is studied using first-order reversal curve method in electrochemical strain microscopy (ESM). The oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) is activated at voltages as low as 3-4 V with respect to bottom electrode. The degree of bias-induced transformation as quantified by ESM hysteresis loop area increases with applied bias. The variability of electrochemical activity is explored using correlation analysis and the ORR/OER is shown to be activated in grains at relatively low biases, but the final reaction rate is relatively small. At the same time, at grain boundaries, the onset of reaction process corresponds to larger voltages, but limiting reactivity is much higher. The reaction mechanism in ESM of mixed electronic-ionic conductor is further analyzed. These studies both establish the framework for probing bias-dependent electrochemical processes in solids and demonstrate rich spectrum of electrochemical transformations underpinning catalytic activity in cobaltites.
