The reflection phase response of a two-layer array of orthogonally oriented concentric split rings is presented. Splitting the ring elements suppresses the interlayer coupling and produces polarisation sensitive scattering. Simulated and measured results at X-band demonstrate that these proper-ties enable the reflection phase coefficients of a reflect-array to be independently optimised at two different frequencies.

In this article, we present position indication functionality as obtained by using a retrodirective array, thereby allowing location information extraction of the position of the remote transmitter with which the retrodirective array is cooperating. This is carried out using straightforward circuitry with no requirement for complex angle of arrival algorithms, thereby giving a result in real time enabling tracking of fast moving transmitters. We show using a 10 x element retrodirective array, operating at 2.4 GHz that accuracies of far-field angle of arrival of within +/- 1 degrees over the arrays +/- 30 degrees azimuth field of view are possible. While in the near-field for angles of arrival of +/- 10 degrees it is possible to extract the position of a dipole source down to a resolution of 032 lambda. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Capillary hydrodynamics has three considerable distinctions from macrosystems: first, there is an increase in the ratio of the surface area of the phases to the volume that they occupy; second, a flow is characterized by small Reynolds numbers at which viscous forces predominate over inertial forces; and third, the microroughness and wettability of the wall of the channel exert a considerable influence on the flow pattern. In view of these differences, the correlations used for tubes with a larger diameter cannot be used to calculate the boundaries of the transitions between different flow regimes in microchannels. In the present review, an analysis of published data on a gas-liquid two-phase flow in capillaries of various shapes is given, which makes it possible to systematize the collected body of information. The specific features of the geometry of a mixer and an inlet section, the hydraulic diameter of a capillary, and the surface tension of a liquid exert the strongest influence on the position of the boundaries of two-phase flow regimes. Under conditions of the constant geometry of the mixer, the best agreement in the position of the boundaries of the transitions between different hydrodynamic regimes in capillaries is observed during the construction of maps of the regimes with the use of the Weber numbers for a gas and a liquid as coordinate axes.

The phase structure evolution of high impact polypropylene copolymer (IPC) during molten-state annealing and its influence on crystallization behaviour were studied. An entirely different architecture of the IPC melt was observed after being annealed, and this architecture resulted in variations of the crystallization behaviour. In addition, it was found that the core-shell structure of the dispersed phase was completely destroyed and the sizes of the dispersed domains increased sharply after being annealed at 200 degrees C for 200 min. Through examination of the coarseness of the phase morphology using phase contrast microscopy (PCM), it was found that a co-continuous structure and an abnormal 'sea-island' structure generally appeared with an increase in annealing time. The original matrix PP component appeared as a dispersed phase, whereas the copolymer components formed a continuous 'sea-island' structure. This change is ascribed to the large tension induced by solidification at the phase interface and the great content difference between the components. When the temperature was reduced the structure reverted to its original form. With increasing annealing time, the spherulite profiles became more defined and the spherulite birefringence changed from vague to clear. Overall crystallization rates and nucleation densities decreased, but the spherulite radial growth rates remained almost constant, indicating that molten-state annealing mainly affects the nucleation ability of IPC, due to a coarsened microstructure and decreased interface area. The initial kinetics of the oxidation of 4-chlorophenol, 4-CP, photocatalyzed by titania films and aqueous dispersions were studied as a function of oxygen partial pressure, P-O2, and incident light intensity, I. The reaction conditions were such that the kinetics were independent of [4-CP] but strongly dependent on PO2-a situation that allowed investigation of the less-often studied kinetics of oxygen reduction. The observed kinetics fit a pseudo-steady-state model in which the oxygen is Langmuir-adsorbed on the titania photocatalyst particles before being reduced by photogenerated electrons. The maximum rate of photocatalysis depends directly on I-beta, where, beta = 1 for films and 0.7 for dispersions of titania, indicating that the kinetics are dominated by the surface reactions of the photogenerated electrons and holes for the films and by direct recombination for the powder dispersions. Using the pseudo-first-order model, for both titania films and dispersions, the apparent Langmuir adsorption constant, K-LH, derived from a Langmuir-Hinshelwood analysis of the kinetics, appears to be largely independent of incident light intensity, unlike KLH for 4-CP Consequently, similar values are obtained for the Langmuir adsorption constant, K-ads, extracted from a pseudosteady-state analysis of the kinetics for oxygen on TiO2 dispersions and films in aqueous solution (i.e., ca. 0.0265 +/- 0.005 kPa(-1)), and for both films and dispersions, oxygen appears to be weakly adsorbed on TiO2 compared with 4-CP, at a rate that would take many minutes to reach equilibrium. The value of Kads for oxygen on titania particles dispersed in solution is ca. 4.7 times lower than that reported for the dark Langmuir adsorption isotherm; possible causes for this difference are discussed. The kinetics of liquid phase semiconductor photocatalytic and photoassisted reactions are an area of some debate, reignited recently by an article by Ollis(1) in which he proposed a simple pseudo- steady- state model to interpret the Langmuir- Hinshelwood type kinetics, commonly observed in such systems. In the current article, support for this model, over other models, is provided by a reinterpretation of the results of a study, reported initially in 1999,2 of the photoassisted mineralization of 4- chlorophenol, 4-CP, by titania films and dispersions as a function of incident light intensity, I. On the basis of this model, these results indicate that 4- CP is adsorbed more strongly on P25 TiO2 when it is in a dispersed, rather than a film form, due to a higher rate constant for adsorption, k(1). In addition, the kinetics of 4- CP removal appear to depend on I-beta where, beta = 1 or 0.6 for when the TiO2 is in a film or a dispersed form, respectively. These findings are discussed both in terms of the pseudo- steady- state model and other popular kinetic models.

Two techniques are demonstrated to produce ultrashort pulse trains capable of quasi-phase-matching high-harmonic generation. The first technique makes use of an array of birefringent crystals and is shown to generate high-contrast pulse trains with constant pulse spacing. The second technique employs a grating-pair stretcher, a multiple-order wave plate, and a linear polarizer. Trains of up to 100 pulses are demonstrated with this technique, with almost constant inter-pulse separation. It is shown that arbitrary pulse separation can be achieved by introducing the appropriate dispersion. This principle is demonstrated by using an acousto-optic programmable dispersive filter to introduce third-and fourth-order dispersions leading to a linear and quadratic variation of the separation of pulses through the train. Chirped-pulse trains of this type may be used to quasi-phase-match high-harmonic generation in situations where the coherence length varies through the medium. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Throughout design development of satellite structure, stress engineer is usually challenged with randomness in applied loads and material properties. To overcome such problem, a risk-based design is applied which estimates satellite structure probability of failure under static and thermal loads. Determining probability of failure can help to update initially applied factors of safety that were used during structure preliminary design phase. These factors of safety are related to the satellite mission objective. Sensitivity-based analysis is to be implemented in the context of finite element analysis (probabilistic finite element method or stochastic finite element method (SFEM)) to determine the probability of failure for satellite structure or one of its components.

The amount of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) O antigen (OAg) and its chain length distribution are important factors that protect bacteria from serum complement. Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi produces LPS with long chain length distribution (L-OAg) controlled by the wzz gene, whereas serovar Typhimurium produces LPS with two OAg chain lengths: an L-OAg controlled by Wzz(ST) and a very long (VL) OAg determined by Wzz(fepE). This study shows that serovar Enteritidis also has a bimodal OAg distribution with two preferred OAg chain lengths similar to serovar Typhimurium. It was reported previously that OAg production by S. Typhi increases at the late exponential and stationary phases of growth. The results of this study demonstrate that increased amounts of L-OAg produced by S. Typhi grown to stationary phase confer higher levels of bacterial resistance to human serum. Production of OAg by serovars Typhimurium and Enteritidis was also under growth-phase-dependent regulation; however, while the total amount of OAg increased during growth, the VL-OAg distribution remained constant. The VL-OAg distribution was primarily responsible for complement resistance, protecting the non-typhoidal serovars from the lytic action of serum irrespective of the growth phase. As a result, the non-typhoidal species were significantly more resistant than S. Typhi to human serum. When S. Typhi was transformed with a multicopy plasmid containing the S. Typhimurium wzz(fepE) gene, resistance to serum increased to levels comparable to the non-typhoidal serovars. In contrast to the relevant role for high-molecular-mass OAg molecules, the presence of Vi antigen did not contribute to serum resistance of clinical isolates of serovar Typhi.

Agroecological zones within Bangladesh with low levels of arsenic in groundwater and soils produce rice that is high in arsenic with respect to other producing regions of the globe. Little is known about arsenic cycling in these soils and the labile fractions relevant for plant uptake when flooded. Soil porewater dynamics of field soils (n = 39) were recreated under standardized laboratory conditions to investigate the mobility and interplay of arsenic, Fe, Si, C, and other elements, in relation to rice grain element composition, using the dynamic sampling technique diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT). Based on a simple model using only labile DGT measured arsenic and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), concentrations of arsenic in Aman (Monsoon season) rice grain were predicted reliably. DOC was the strongest determinant of arsenic solid-solution phase partitioning, while arsenic release to the soil porewater was shown to be decoupled from that of Fe. This study demonstrates the dual importance of organic matter (OM), in terms of enhancing arsenic release from soils, while reducing bioavailability by sequestering arsenic in solution.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) against S-ibuprofen were synthesised using a tailor made functional monomer, 2-acrylamido-4-methylpyridine, following extensive pre-polymerisation studies of template-monomer complexation. An apparent association constant of 340 +/- 22 M-1 was calculated that was subsequently corrected to account for dimerisation of ibuprofen (K-dim = 320 +/- 95 M-1) resulting in an intrinsic association constant of 715 +/- 16 M-1, consistent with previously reported values. Using the synthesised imprinted polymer as a stationary phase, complete resolution of a racemic mixture of ibuprofen was achieved in predominantly aqueous mobile phases. An imprinting factor of 10 was observed, and was found to be in agreement with the difference in the average number of binding sites between MIP and blank polymers, calculated by staircase frontal chromatography. The imprinted polymers exhibited enhanced selectivity for the templated drug over structurally related NSAIDs. When applied as sorbents in solid-phase extraction of ibuprofen from commercial tablets, urine and blood serum samples, recoveries up to 92.2% were achieved. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012

The two-phase flow of a hydrophobic ionic liquid and water was studied in capillaries made of three different materials (two types of Teflon, FEP and Tefzel, and glass) with sizes between 200µm and 270µm. The ionic liquid was 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}amide, with density and viscosity of 1420kgm and 0.041kgms, respectively. Flow patterns and pressure drop were measured for two inlet configurations (T- and Y-junction), for total flow rates of 0.065-214.9cmh and ionic liquid volume fractions from 0.05 to 0.8. The continuous phase in the glass capillary depended on the fluid that initially filled the channel. When water was introduced first, it became the continuous phase with the ionic liquid forming plugs or a mixture of plugs and drops within it. In the Teflon microchannels, the order that fluids were introduced did not affect the results and the ionic liquid was always the continuous phase. The main patterns observed were annular, plug, and drop flow. Pressure drop in the Teflon microchannels at a constant ionic liquid flow rate, was found to increase as the ionic liquid volume fraction decreased, and was always higher than the single phase ionic liquid value at the same flow rate as in the two-phase mixture. However, in the glass microchannel during plug flow with water as the continuous phase, pressure drop for a constant ionic liquid flow rate was always lower than the single phase ionic liquid value. A modified plug flow pressure drop model using a correlation for film thickness derived for the current fluids pair showed very good agreement with the experimental data. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Background: Advanced colorectal cancer is treated with a combination of cytotoxic drugs and targeted treatments. However, how best to minimise the time spent taking cytotoxic drugs and whether molecular selection can refine this further is unknown. The primary aim of this study was to establish how cetuximab might be safely and effectively added to intermittent chemotherapy.
Methods: COIN-B was an open-label, multicentre, randomised, exploratory phase 2 trial done at 30 hospitals in the UK and one in Cyprus. We enrolled patients with advanced colorectal cancer who had received no previous chemotherapy for metastases. Randomisation was done centrally (by telephone) by the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit using minimisation with a random element. Treatment allocation was not masked. Patients were assigned (1:1) to intermittent chemotherapy plus intermittent cetuximab or to intermittent chemotherapy plus continuous cetuximab. Chemotherapy was FOLFOX (folinic acid and oxaliplatin followed by bolus and infused fluorouracil). Patients in both groups received FOLFOX and weekly cetuximab for 12 weeks, then either had a planned interruption (those taking intermittent cetuximab) or planned maintenance by continuing on weekly cetuximab (continuous cetuximab). On RECIST progression, FOLFOX plus cetuximab or FOLFOX was recommenced for 12 weeks followed by further interruption or maintenance cetuximab, respectively. The primary outcome was failure-free survival at 10 months. The primary analysis population consisted of patients who completed 12 weeks of treatment without progression, death, or leaving the trial. We tested BRAF and NRAS status retrospectively. The trial was registered, ISRCTN38375681.
Findings: We registered 401 patients, 226 of whom were enrolled. Results for 169 with KRAS wild-type are reported here, 78 (46%) assigned to intermittent cetuximab and 91 (54%) to continuous cetuximab. 64 patients assigned to intermittent cetuximab and 66 of those assigned to continuous cetuximab were included in the primary analysis. 10-month failure-free survival was 50% (lower bound of 95% CI 39) in the intermittent group versus 52% (lower bound of 95% CI 41) in the continuous group; median failure-free survival was 12·2 months (95% CI 8·8–15·6) and 14·3 months (10·7–20·4), respectively. The most common grade 3–4 adverse events were skin rash (21 [27%] of 77 patients vs 20 [22%] of 92 patients), neutropenia (22 [29%] vs 30 [33%]), diarrhoea (14 [18%] vs 23 [25%]), and lethargy (20 [26%] vs 19 [21%]).
Interpretation: Cetuximab was safely incorporated in two first-line intermittent chemotherapy strategies. Maintenance of biological monotherapy, with less cytotoxic chemotherapy within the first 6 months, in molecularly selected patients is promising and should be validated in phase 3 trials.

We have resolved the solid-liquid phase transition of carbon at pressures around 150GPa. High-pressure samples of different temperatures were created by laser-driven shock compression of graphite and varying the initial density from 1.30g/cm3 to 2.25g/cm3. In this way, temperatures from 5700K to 14,500K could be achieved for relatively constant pressure according to hydrodynamic simulations. From measuring the elastic X-ray scattering intensity of vanadium K-alpha radiation at 4.95keVat a scattering angle of 126°, which is very sensitive to the solid-liquid transition, we can determine whether the sample had transitioned to the fluid phase. We find that samples of initial density 1.3g/cm3 and 1.85g/cm3 are liquid in the compressed states, whereas samples close to the ideal graphite crystal density of 2.25g/cm3 remain solid, probably in a diamond-like state.

This letter presents a simple tracking phased locked loop (PLL) that can be used to track phase-modulated signals and provide a phase-conjugated signal for retrodirective retransmission. The configuration allows the retrodirective antenna to directly track phase-modulated signals with no requirement for a separate continuous wave (CW) pilot tone. The ability to directly track phase-modulated signals is carried out using a 4× multiplier on the tracking PLL reference signal. Practical phase conjugation results are presented for a five-element retrodirective array simultaneously sending and receiving phase-modulated (QPSK) signals. Signals with levels as low as -122 dBm can be phase-conjugated and retransmitted with 30 dBm EIRP.
