We propose a complex fiber bundle model for the optimization of heterogeneous materials, which consists of many simple bundles. We also present an exact and compact recursion relation for the failure probability of a simple fiber bundle model with local load sharing, which is more efficient than the ones reported previously. Using a ''renormalization method'' and the recursion relation developed for the simple bundle, we calculate the failure probabilities of the complex fiber bundle. When the total number of fibers is given, we find that there exists an optimum way to organize the complex bundle, in which one gets a stronger bundle than in other ways.

We develop a recursion-relation approach for calculating the failure probabilities of a fiber bundle with local load sharing. This recursion relation is exact, so it provides a way to test the validity of the various approximate methods. Applying the exact calculation to uniform and Weibull threshold distributions, we find that the most probable failure load coincides with the average strength as the size of the system N --> infinity.

We discuss a very effective numerical method for simulating fibre-bundle models with equal load-sharing and with local load-sharing. Particular attention is paid to the case of the local load-sharing model, in which the critical load x(c) is defined as the average load per fibre that causes the final complete failure. It is shown that x(c) --> 0 when the size of the system N --> infinity. We also show analytically that the power law of the burst size distribution, D(Delta) alpha Delta(-xi), is approximately correct. The exponent xi in the local load-sharing case is not universal, since it depends on the strength distribution as well on as the size of the system.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a novel optical fiber temperature compensated relative humidity (RH) sensor device, based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and developed specifically for monitoring water ingress leading to the deterioration of building stone. The performance of the sensor thus created, together with that of conventional sensors, was first assessed in the laboratory where they were characterized under experimental conditions of controlled wetting and drying cycles of limestone blocks, before being employed “in-the-field” to monitor actual building stone in a specially built wall. Although a new construction, this was built specifically using conservation methods similar to those employed in past centuries, to allow an accurate simulation of processes occurring with wetting and drying in the historic walls in the University of Oxford.

Composites of recycled carbon fiber (CF) with up to 30 wt % loading with polyethylene (PE) were prepared via melt compounding. The morphology of the composites and the degree of dispersion of the CF in the PE matrix was examined using scanning electron microscopy, and revealed the CF to be highly dispersed at all loadings and strong interfacial adhesion to exist between the CF and PE. Raman and FTIR spectroscopy were used to characterize the surface chemistry and potential bonding sites of recycled CF. Both the Young's modulus and ultimate tensile stress increased with increasing CF loading, but the percentage stress at break was unchanged up to 5 wt % loading, then decreased with further successive addition of CF. The effect of CF on the elastic modulus of PE was examined using the Halpin-Tsai and modified Cox models, the former giving a better fit with the values determined experimentally. The electrical conductivity of the PE matrix was enhanced by about 11 orders of magnitude on addition of recycled CF with a percolation threshold of 7 and 15 wt % for 500-mu m and 3-mm thick samples. Purpose: The authors estimated the retinal nerve fiber layer height (RNFLH) measurements in patients with glaucoma compared with those in age-matched healthy subjects as obtained by the laser scanning tomography and assessed the relationship between RNFLH measurements and optic and visual field status. Methods: Parameters of optic nerve head topography and RNFLH were evaluated in 125 eyes of 21 healthy subjects and 104 patients with glaucoma using the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph ([HRT] Heidelberg Engineering GmbH, Heidelberg, Germany) for the entire disc area and for the superior 70°(50°temporal and 20°nasal to the vertical midline) and inferior 70°sectors of the optic disc. The mean deviation of the visual field, as determined by the Humphrey program 24-2 (Humphrey Instruments, Inc., San Leonardo, CA, U.S.A) was calculated in the entire field and in the superior and inferior Bjerrum area. Result: Retinal nerve fiber layer height parameters (mean RNFLH and RNFL cross-sectional area) were decreased significantly in patients with glaucoma compared with healthy individuals. Retinal nerve fiber layer height parameters was correlated strongly with rim volume, rim area, and cup/disc area ratio. Of the various topography measures, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) parameters and cup/disc area ratio showed the strongest correlation with visual field mean deviation in patients with glaucoma. Conclusion: Retinal nerve fiber layer height measures were reduced substantially in patients with glaucoma compared with age-matched healthy subjects. Retinal nerve fiber layer height was correlated strongly with topographic optic disc parameters and visual field changes in patients with glaucoma.

Drilling is a major process in the manufacturing of holes required for the assemblies of composite laminates in aerospace industry. Simulation of drilling process is an effective method in optimizing the drill geometry and process parameters in order to improve hole quality and to reduce the drill wear. In this research we have developed three-dimensional (3D) FE model for drilling CFRP. A 3D progressive intra-laminar failure model based on the Hashin's theory is considered. Also an inter-laminar delamination model which includes the onset and growth of delamination by using cohesive contact zone is developed. The developed model with inclusion of the improved delamination model and real drill geometry is used to make comparison between the step drill of different stage ratio and twist drill. Thrust force, torque and work piece stress distributions are estimated to decrease by the use of step drill with high stage ratio. The model indicates that delamination and other workpiece defects could be controlled by selection of suitable step drill geometry. Hence the 3D model could be used as a design tool for drill geometry for minimization of delamination in CFRP drilling. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Dietary fiber has several anticarcinogenic effects and is thought to be protective against esophageal cancer. The aim of this systematic review was to quantify the association between dietary fiber and the risk of esophageal cancer by investigating histological subtypes of esophageal cancer and the stage at which fiber may influence the carcinogenic pathway. Systematic search strategies were used to identify relevant studies, and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were combined using random-effects meta-analyses to assess the risk of cancer when comparing extreme categories of fiber intake. Ten relevant case-control studies were identified within the timeframe searched. Pooled estimates from eight studies of esophageal adenocarcinoma revealed a significant inverse association with the highest fiber intakes (OR 0.66; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.44-0.98). Two studies also identified protective effects of dietary fiber against Barrett's esophagus. Similar, though nonsignificant, associations were observed when results from five studies of fiber intake and risk of squamous cell carcinoma were combined (OR 0.61; 95%CI 0.31-1.20). Dietary fiber is associated with protective effects against esophageal carcinogenesis, most notably esophageal adenocarcinoma. Potential methods of action include modification of gastroesophageal reflux and/or weight control.
