Objective: The aim was to investigate the association between periodontal health and the serum levels of various antioxidants including carotenoids, retinol and vitamin E in a homogenous group of Western European men.
Materials and Methods: A representative sample of 1258 men aged 60-70 years, drawn from the population of Northern Ireland, was examined between 2001 and 2003. Each participant had six or more teeth, completed a questionnaire and underwent a clinical periodontal examination. Serum lipid-soluble antioxidant levels were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection. Multivariable analysis was carried out using logistic regression with adjustment for possible confounders. Models were constructed using two measures of periodontal status (low- and high-threshold periodontitis) as dependent variables and the fifths of each antioxidant as a predictor variable.
Results: The levels of a- and ß-carotene, ß-cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin were highly significantly lower in the men with low-threshold periodontitis (p<0.001). These carotenoids were also significantly lower in high-threshold periodontitis. There were no significant differences in the levels of lutein, lycopene, a- and ?-tocopherol or retinol in relation to periodontitis. In fully adjusted models, there was an inverse relationship between a number of carotenoids (a- and ß-carotene and ß-cryptoxanthin) and low-threshold periodontitis. ß-Carotene and ß-cryptoxanthin were the only antioxidants that were associated with an increased risk of high-threshold severe periodontitis. The adjusted odds ratio for high-threshold periodontitis in the lowest fifth relative to the highest fifth of ß-cryptoxanthin was 4.02 (p=0.003).
Conclusion: It is concluded that low serum levels of a number of carotenoids, in particular beta-cryptoxanthin and beta-carotene, were associated with an increased prevalence of periodontitis in this homogenous group of 60-70-year-old Western European men.

Cyclic voltammetry and absorption spectrophotometry were used to examine the complex formation of cobalt (II) in the ionic liquids 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C(4)mim] Cl) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([C(4)mim][Tf2N]). In [C(4)mim]Cl, cobalt(II) is complexed as [CoCl4](2-) at CoCl2 concentrations less than 33 mol %. Cyclic voltammograms show that cobalt cannot be electrodeposited at these concentrations. However, cobalt metal can be electrodeposited at CoCl2 concentrations above the threshold concentration of 33 mol %. In the ionic liquid [C(4)mim][Tf2N] there is no threshold CoCl2 concentration for electrodeposition due to the absence of [CoCl4](2-). (C) 2007 The Electrochemical Society.

A series of nitrile-functionalized ionic liquids were found to exhibit temperature-dependent miscibility (thermomorphism) with the lower alcohols. Their coordinating abilities toward cobalt(II) ions were investigated through the dissolution process of cobalt(II) bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and were found to depend on the donor abilities of the nitrile group. The crystal structures of the cobalt(II) solvates [Co(C1C1CNPyr)2(Tf2N)4] and [Co(C1C2CNPyr)6][Tf2N]8, which were isolated from ionic-liquid solutions, gave an insight into the coordination chemistry of functionalized ionic liquids. Smooth layers of cobalt metal could be obtained by electrodeposition of the cobalt-containing ionic liquids.

A wide tuning range voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) with novel architecture is proposed in this work. The entire circuit consists of a VCO core, a summing circuit, a single-ended to differential (STD) converter and a buffer amplifier. The VCO core oscillates at half the desired frequency and the second harmonic of the VCO core is extracted by the summing circuit, which is then converted to a differential pair by the STD. The entire VCO circuit operates from 58.85 to 70.85 GHz with 20% frequency tuning range. The measured VCO gain is less than 1.6 GHz/V. The measured phase noise at 3 MHz offset is less than -78 dBc/Hz across the entire tuning range. The differential phase error of the output signals is measured by down converting the VCO output signals to low gigahertz frequency using an on-chip mixer. The measured differential phase error is less than 8°. The VCO circuit, which is constructed using 0.35 µm SiGe technology, occupies 770 × 550 µm2 die area and consumes 62 mA under 3.5 V supply.

2-Phosphanylethylcyclopentadienyl lithium compounds, Li[C5R'(4)(CH2)(2)PR2] (R = Et, R' = H or Me, R = Ph, R' = Me), have been prepared from the reaction of spirohydrocarbons C5R'(4)(C2H4) with LiPR2. C5Et4HSiMe2CH2PMe2, was prepared from reaction of Li[C5Et4] with Me2SiCl2 followed by Me2PCH2Li. The lithium salts were reacted with [RhCl(CO)2]2,[IrCl(CO)3] or [Co-2(CO)(8)] to give [M(C5R'(4)(CH2) 2PR2)(CO)] (M = Rh, R = Et, R' = H or Me, R= Ph, R' = Me; M = Ir or Co, R = Et, R' = Me), which have been fully characterised, in many cases crystallographically as monomers with coordination of the phosphorus atom and the cyclopentadienyl ring. The values of nu(CO) for these complexes are usually lower than those for the analogous complexes without the bridge between the cyclopentadienyl ring and the phosphine, the exception being [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)(CO)] (Cp' = C5Me4), the most electron rich of the complexes. [Rh(C5Et4SiMe2CH2PMe2)(CO)] may be a dimer. [Co-2(CO)(8)] reacts with C5H5(CH2)(2)PEt2 or C5Et4HSiMe2CH2PMe2 (L) to give binuclear complexes of the form [Co-2(CO)(6)L-2] with almost linear PCoCoP skeletons. [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)(CO)] and [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PPh2)(CO)] are active for methanol carbonylation at 150 degrees C and 27 bar CO, with the rate using [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PPh2)(CO)] (0.81 mol dm(-3) h(-1)) being higher than that for [RhI2(CO)(2)](-) (0.64 mol dm(-3) h(-1)). The most electron rich complex, [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)(CO)] (0.38 mol dm(-3) h(-1)) gave a comparable rate to [Cp*Rh(PEt3)(CO)] (0.30 mol dm(-3) h(-1)), which was unstable towards oxidation of the phosphine. [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)I-2], which is inactive for methanol carbonylation, was isolated after the methanol carbonylation reaction using [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)(CO)].

Voltage-sensitive ionic currents were identified and characterised in ventricular myocytes of the bivalve mollusc, Mytilus edulis, using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. Two outward currents could be distinguished. A potassium A current (I-A) activated at - 30 mV from a holding potential of - 60 mV. This transient current was inactivated by holding the cells at a potential of - 40 mV and was also blocked by applying 4-aminopyridine (3 mM) to the external bath solution. A second current was identified as a delayed rectifier (I-K). This also activated at - 30 mV but exhibited a sustained time course and was still activated at a holding potential of - 40 mV. Both outward currents were reduced in the presence of tetraethylammonium ions (30 mM). A small number of heart cells also showed an inward sodium current (I-Na). This current appeared at potentials more positive than - 50 mV, reached a maximum at - 20 mV, and decreased with further depolarisation. I-Na was inactivated at a holding potential of - 40 mV and was blocked by tetrodotoxin (1 mu M). A second inward current had a sustained time course and was not inactivated by holding the cell at a potential of -40 mV, and was also not abolished by tetrodotoxin. This current peaked at 0 mV, decreasing with further depolarisation. Furthermore, it was enhanced by the addition of barium ions (3 mM) to the bath and was blocked by external cobalt (2 mM) or nifedipine (15 mu M) These findings are consistent with this being an L-type calcium current (I-Ca) The possible physiological roles of these currents in M. edulis heart are discussed. Objective To investigate the association between periodontitis and mortality from all causes in a prospective study in a homogenous group of 60- to 70-year-old West European men. Methodology A representative sample of 1400 dentate men, (mean age 63.8, SD 3.0 years), drawn from the population of Northern Ireland, had a comprehensive periodontal examination between 2001 and 2003. Men were divided into thirds on the basis of their mean periodontal attachment loss (PAL). The primary endpoint, death from any cause, was analysed using Kaplan-Meier survival plots and Cox's proportional hazards model. Results In total, 152 (10.9%) of the men died during a mean follow-up of 8.9 (SD 0.7) years; 37 (7.9%) men in the third with the lowest PAL (<1.8 mm) died compared with 73 (15.7%) in the third with the highest PAL (>2.6 mm). The unadjusted hazard ratio (HR) for death in the men with the highest level of PAL compared with those with the lowest PAL was 2.11 (95% CI 1.42-3.14), p < 0.0001. After adjustment for confounding variables (age, smoking, hypertension, BMI, diabetes, cholesterol, education, marital status and previous history of a cardiovascular event) the HR was 1.57 (1.04-2.36), p = 0.03. Conclusion The European men in this prospective cohort study with the most severe loss of periodontal attachment were at an increased risk of death compared with those with the lowest loss of periodontal attachment.
