Major volcanic eruptions can impact on global climate by injecting large quantities of aerosols and ash into the atmosphere that alter the radiative balance and chemical equilibrium of the stratosphere. The Millennium eruption of Tianchi (Paektu), China/North Korea, was one of the largest Late Holocene eruptions. Uncertainty about the precise timing of the eruption has hindered the recognition of its climate impact in palaeoclimate and historical records. Here we report the compelling identification of the eruption's volcanic signal in Greenland ice cores through the association of geochemically-characterized volcanic glass, represented in by bimodal populations that compare with proximal material from the source eruption. The eruption most probably occurred in the AD 940?s, seven years after the Eldgjá eruption on Iceland. We examine the eruption's potential for climate forcing using the sulfate records from the ice-cores and conclude that it was unlikely to have had a global or extra-regional impact.

Objective: To determine the incidence and to explore the risk factors for traumatic graft dehiscence after penetrating keratoplasty. Design: Retrospective case note review. Participants: Five hundred seventy-two consecutive cases were included. Intervention: All subjects who underwent penetrating keratoplasty in 1 regional center between 1992 and 2004 inclusive. Main Outcome Measures: Cases that experienced postoperative traumatic graft dehiscence were identified. Results from 12 other similar studies were pooled for comparison. Results: Fifteen eyes (2.6%) were treated for traumatic wound dehiscence after penetrating keratoplasty. The most striking feature of this series was the bimodal relationship of age and cause of graft dehiscence, with older patients involved in falls and younger patients in accidental or deliberate trauma. Factors that may influence the risk of traumatic graft dehiscence are discussed, in the light of the present findings and pooled data from previous series. Conclusions: This case series indicates that there is long-term risk of traumatic wound dehiscence after penetrating keratoplasty. Younger patients, especially males, should be made aware that their eye, after keratoplasty, will always be vulnerable to injury. High-risk situations should be avoided if possible. Older patients at particular risk should have adequate risk reduction strategies, social support, and supervision, in particular to minimize the risk of falls. © 2008 American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Three new microtephras are reported from a number of lake sites from the Inner Hebrides and Scottish mainland. One occurs stratigrapically in the middle of Greenland Interstadial 1 (GI-1) and has been named the Penifiler Tephra. It is rhyolitic and possesses a geochemical signature that is very similar to that of the Borrobol Tephra, which also occurs in three of the sequences reported here, but which lies close to the lower boundary of GI-1. The second occurs stratigraphically in the early Holocene below the Saksunarvatn Ash and is named the Ashik Tephra. This tephra is geochemically bimodal, with a rhyolitic component comparable to the An Druim Tephra that occurs later in the Holocene, and a basaltic component which is similar to the Saksunarvatn Ash. A third tephra occurs stratigraphically above the Saksunarvatn Ash and is provisionally named the Breakish Tephra. The consistent inter-site correlation demonstrated for these new tephras at several sites enhances the regional tephrostratigraphic framework, and increases the potential for correlating palaeoenvironmental events during GI-1 and the early Holocene. However, the occurrence of multiple tephras with similar geochemistry in close stratigraphic and temporal proximity has implications for the rigour with which tephrostratigraphic investigations must be performed.

Suction is an important stress variable that is required for reliable predictions of the likely performance of unsaturated soils. The axis translation technique is the best established method of measuring or controlling suction; however, the success of this application is heavily dependent on the rating of the high air entry filter (HAF) and how it is incorporated into the testing system. This paper reports some basic experiments in which samples of unsaturated kaolin were brought to saturation in stages using 5 bar and 15 bar HAFs. The results have shown that the water equilibrium in unsaturated soils is greatly affected by the rating of filters. The findings also suggest that the flow through unsaturated soils is not necessarily governed by the one-dimensional consolidation theory that was developed for saturated soils, and this may be attributed to the bimodal pore size distribution of unsaturated soils.

Differential emission measures (DEMs) during the impulsive phase of solar flares were constructed using observations from the EUV Variability Experiment (EVE) and the Markov-Chain Monte Carlo method. Emission lines from ions formed over the temperature range log Te = 5.8-7.2 allow the evolution of the DEM to be studied over a wide temperature range at 10 s cadence. The technique was applied to several M- and X-class flares, where impulsive phase EUV emission is observable in the disk-integrated EVE spectra from emission lines formed up to 3-4 MK and we use spatially unresolved EVE observations to infer the thermal structure of the emitting region. For the nine events studied, the DEMs exhibited a two-component distribution during the impulsive phase, a low-temperature component with peak temperature of 1-2 MK, and a broad high-temperature component from 7 to 30 MK. A bimodal high-temperature component is also found for several events, with peaks at 8 and 25 MK during the impulsive phase. The origin of the emission was verified using Atmospheric Imaging Assembly images to be the flare ribbons and footpoints, indicating that the constructed DEMs represent the spatially average thermal structure of the chromospheric flare emission during the impulsive phase.

Rapid and sensitive detection of viral infections associated with Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) in live animals is recognized as key to minimizing the impact of this disease. ELISA-based testing is limited as it typically relies on the detection of a single viral antibody subtype within an individual test sample and testing is relatively slow and expensive. We have recently initiated a new project entitled AgriSense to develop a novel low-cost and label-free, integrated bimodal electronic biosensor system for BRD. The biosensor system will consist of an integrated multichannel thin-film-transistor biosensor and an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy biosensor, interfaced with PDMS-based microfluidic sample delivery channels. By using both sensors in tandem, nonspecific binding biomolecules must have the same mass to charge ratio as the target analyte to elicit equivalent responses from both sensors. The system will target simultaneous multiplexed sensing of the four primary viral agents involved in the development of BRD: bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1), bovine parainfluenza virus-3 (BPIV-3), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), and bovine viral diarrhea (BVD). Optimized experimental conditions derived through model antigen-antibody studies will be applied to the detection of serological markers of BRD-related infections based on IgG interaction with a panel of sensor-immobilized viral proteins. This rapid, “cowside” multiplex sensor capability presents a major step forward in disease diagnosis, helping to ensure the integrity of the agri-food supply chain by reducing the risk of disease spread during animal movement and transport.

Because of the requirements for the damage tolerance and fatigue life of commercial aircraft components, the high cycle fatigue (HCF) properties of Ti–5Al–5Mo–5V–1Cr–1Fe titanium alloy forgings are important. The effects of microstructure types of the α+β titanium alloy on fatigue properties need to be understood. In this paper, by analysing the fracture surfaces of the titanium alloy having four types of microstructure, the effects of microstructure are investigated. The differences of initiation areas and crack propagation among different microstructures were studied. It was found that the area of the initiation region decreases in the order of coarse basketweave, fine basketweave, Widmanstätten, and bimodal microstructure.

Background: Search filters are combinations of words and phrases designed to retrieve an optimal set of records on a particular topic (subject filters) or study design (methodological filters). Information specialists are increasingly turning to reusable filters to focus their searches. However, the extent of the academic literature on search filters is unknown. We provide a broad overview to the academic literature on search filters.
Objectives: To map the academic literature on search filters from 2004 to 2015 using a novel form of content analysis.
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search for literature between 2004 and 2015 across eight databases using a subjectively derived search strategy. We identified key words from titles, grouped them into categories, and examined their frequency and co-occurrences.
Results: The majority of records were housed in Embase (n = 178) and MEDLINE (n = 154). Over the last decade, both databases appeared to exhibit a bimodal distribution with the number of publications on search filters rising until 2006, before dipping in 2007, and steadily increasing until 2012. Few articles appeared in social science databases over the same time frame (e.g. Social Services Abstracts, n = 3).
Unsurprisingly, the term ‘search’ appeared in most titles, and quite often, was used as a noun adjunct for the word 'filter' and ‘strategy’. Across the papers, the purpose of searches as a means of 'identifying' information and gathering ‘evidence’ from 'databases' emerged quite strongly. Other terms relating to the methodological assessment of search filters, such as precision and validation, also appeared albeit less frequently.
Conclusions: Our findings show surprising commonality across the papers with regard to the literature on search filters. Much of the literature seems to be focused on developing search filters to identify and retrieve information, as opposed to testing or validating such filters. Furthermore, the literature is mostly housed in health-related databases, namely MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Embase, implying that it is medically driven. Relatively few papers focus on the use of search filters in the social sciences.
