The removal of water from three Portland cement grouts by pressure filtration is examined, and the consolidation behaviour of the filtered material clarified. The filtration takes place by the laying down of a very stiff filter cake through the removal of excess water. The behaviour due to further loading resembles that of a re-constituted silt. For stress levels above the filtration pressure the calculated permeability values are similar to those from the filtration phase only if the data sampling rate was sufficiently rapid to discriminate the first portion of the observed primary consolidation curve. The change in void ratio for incremental loading is roughly linear with the change in the logarithm of the vertical effective stress. The characterisation of fresh cement paste using standard soil mechanics models is both appropriate and useful, at least during the first few hours after mixing.

A nonperturbative nonlinear statistical approach is presented to describe turbulent magnetic systems embedded in a uniform mean magnetic field. A general formula in the form of an ordinary differential equation for magnetic field-line wandering (random walk) is derived. By considering the solution of this equation for different limits several new results are obtained. As an example, it is demonstrated that the stochastic wandering of magnetic field-lines in a two-component turbulence model leads to superdiffusive transport, contrary to an existing diffusive picture. The validity of quasilinear theory for field-line wandering is discussed, with respect to different turbulence geometry models, and previous diffusive results are shown to be deduced in appropriate limits.

A long-synonymized species Benthoctopus normani (Massy 1907) (Cephalopoda: Octopodidae) is redescribed from material collected over 30 years by the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton and the National Museums of Scotland. It can be distinguished from other octopodid specimens found in deep waters of the Northeast Atlantic by its biserial suckers, lack of ink sac, and simple ligula, which lacks transverse ridges. Examination of the collections led to the identification of a new species of Benthoctopus from the Northeast Atlantic, which is described herein.

When attempting to quantify the volatile components of a food isolated by dynamic headspace trapping onto an adsorbent, the analyst has to select the most appropriate compounds to use as standards and at which stage of the analysis to add them. Factors to be borne in mind include the volatility of the standard, the response of the GC detector, and whether to add the standard to the sample or to the adsorbent trap. This chapter considers the issues and describes the application of one chosen method to the quantitation of the volatile components of baked potato.
