This article highlights how problems of recruitment and retention in front-line services create a particular challenge to traditional HRM models and solutions. Private day nurseries make an interesting example of the challenges facing managers in the service sector as the combination of a feminised workforce, a price-sensitive service, public-private competition and state regulation create particular difficulties. We report on a study of 33 day nurseries involving interviews with managers and employees over an eight-month period. Our findings show that childcare providers have to cope with recruitment and retention problems associated with high-end interactive service provision compounded by gender segregation and small business characteristics. Our analysis of employer and employee perspectives examines labour market issues affecting recruitment, and categorises the reasons for staff turnover into internal 'push' factors, external 'pull' factors, outside factors and functional turnover.

In this study data generated by H-1 NMR spectroscopy were combined with chemometrics to analyse beef samples aged over a 21 day period. In particular, the amino acids, of which 12 were identified were found to increase over the ageing period with samples matured for 3 days having notably lower concentrations than carcasses aged for 21 days. This is believed to be a result of increased proteolysis within the muscle. This novel approach of using high resolution NMR spectrometry to analyse beef samples has not previously been reported and these findings demonstrate the potential of this technique linked with HPLC to be used as a suitable method for profiling meat samples.

Over the past ten years, a variety of microRNA target prediction methods has been developed, and many of the methods are constantly improved and adapted to recent insights into miRNA-mRNA interactions. In a typical scenario, different methods return different rankings of putative targets, even if the ranking is reduced to selected mRNAs that are related to a specific disease or cell type. For the experimental validation it is then difficult to decide in which order to process the predicted miRNA-mRNA bindings, since each validation is a laborious task and therefore only a limited number of mRNAs can be analysed. We propose a new ranking scheme that combines ranked predictions from several methods and - unlike standard thresholding methods - utilises the concept of Pareto fronts as defined in multi-objective optimisation. In the present study, we attempt a proof of concept by applying the new ranking scheme to hsa-miR-21, hsa-miR-125b, and hsa-miR-373 and prediction scores supplied by PITA and RNAhybrid. The scores are interpreted as a two-objective optimisation problem, and the elements of the Pareto front are ranked by the STarMir score with a subsequent re-calculation of the Pareto front after removal of the top-ranked mRNA from the basic set of prediction scores. The method is evaluated on validated targets of the three miRNA, and the ranking is compared to scores from DIANA-microT and TargetScan. We observed that the new ranking method performs well and consistent, and the first validated targets are elements of Pareto fronts at a relatively early stage of the recurrent procedure. which encourages further research towards a higher-dimensional analysis of Pareto fronts. Ion-acceleration processes have been studied in ultraintense laser plasma interactions for normal incidence irradiation of solid deuterated targets via neutron spectroscopy. The experimental neutron spectra strongly suggest that the ions are preferentially accelerated radially, rather than into the bulk of the material from three-dimensional Monte Carlo fitting of the neutron spectra. Although the laser system has a 10(-7) contrast ratio, a two-dimensional magnetic hydrodynamics simulation shows that the laser pedestal generates a 10 mum scale length in the coronal plasma with a 3 mum scale-length plasma near the critical density. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, incorporating this realistic density profile, indicate that the acceleration of the ions is caused by a collisionless shock formation. This has implications for modeling energy transport in solid is caused by a collisionless shock formation. This has implications for modeling energy transport in solid density plasmas as well as cone-focused fast ignition using the next generation PW lasers currently under construction.

Ultracold polar molecules, in highly anisotropic traps and interacting via a repulsive dipolar potential, may form one-dimensional chains at high densities. According to classical theory, at low temperatures there exists a critical value of the density at which a second-order phase transition from a linear to a zigzag chain occurs. We study the effect of thermal and quantum fluctuations on these self-organized structures using classical and quantum Monte Carlo methods, by means of which we evaluate the pair correlation function and the static structure factor. Depending on the parameters, these functions exhibit properties typical of a crystalline or of a liquid system. We compare the thermal and the quantum results, identifying analogies and differences. Finally, we discuss experimental parameter regimes where the effects of quantum fluctuations on the linear-zigzag transition can be observed.

A substantial acceleration of the Baylis-Hillman reaction between cyclohexenone and benzaldehyde has been observed when the reaction is conducted in water. Several different amine catalysts were tested, and as with reactions conducted in the absence of solvent, 3-hydroxyquinuclidine was found to be the optimum catalyst in terms of rate. The reaction has been extended to other aldehyde electrophiles including pivaldehyde. Attempts to extend this work to acrylates was only partially successful as rapid hydrolysis of methyl and ethyl acrylates occurred under the base-catalyzed and water-promoted conditions. However, tert-butyl acrylates were sufficiently stable to couple with relatively reactive electrophiles. Further studies on the use of polar solvents revealed that formamide also provided significant acceleration and the use of 5 equiv of formamide (optimum amount) gave faster rates than reactions conducted in water. Using formamide, further acceleration was achieved in the presence of Yb(OTf)(3) (5 mol %). The scope of the new conditions was tested with a range of Michael acceptors and benzaldehyde and with a range of electrophiles and ethyl acrylate. The origin of the rate acceleration is discussed.

Experiments have been carried out to investigate the polar distribution of atomic material ablated during the pulsed laser deposition of Cu in vacuum. Data were obtained as functions of focused laser spot size and power density. Thin films were deposited onto flat glass substrates and thickness profiles were transformed into polar atomic flux distributions of the form f(theta)=cos(n) theta. At constant focused laser power density on target, I=4.7+/-0.3X10(8) W/cm(2), polar distributions were found to broaden with a reduction in the focused laser spot size. The polar distribution exponent n varied from 15+/-2 to 7+/-1 for focused laser spot diameter variation from 2.5 to 1.4 mm, respectively, with the laser beam exhibiting a circular aspect on target. With the focused laser spot size held constant at phi=1.8 mm, polar distributions were observed to broaden with a reduction in the focused laser power density on target, with the associated polar distribution exponent n varying from 13+/-1.5 to 8+/-1 for focused laser power density variation from 8.3+/-0.3X10(8) to 2.2+/-0.1X10(8) W/cm(2) respectively. Data were compared with an analytical model available within the literature, which correctly predicts broadening of the polar distribution with a reduction in focused laser spot size and with a reduction in focused laser power density, although the experimentally observed magnitude was greater than that predicted in both cases. The properties of beams of high energy protons accelerated during ultraintense, picosecond laser-irradiation of thin foil targets are investigated as a function of preplasma expansion at the target front surface. Significant enhancement in the maximum proton energy and laser-to-proton energy conversion efficiency is observed at optimum preplasma density gradients due, to self-focusing Of the incident laser pulse. For very long preplasma expansion, the propagating laser pulse is observed to filament, resulting in highly uniform proton beams, but with reduced flux and maximum energy.

Heterointerface stabilization of a distinct nonpolar BiFeO3 phase occurs simultaneously with changes in octahedral tilts. The resulting phase arises via suppression of polarization by a structural order parameter and can thus be identified as anti-ferroelectric (Fe displacements - bottom panel). The phase is metastable and can be switched into a polar ferroelectric state (top panel) under an applied electric bias.
