Using ownership and control data for 890 firm‐years, this article examines the concentration of capital and voting rights in British companies in the second half of the nineteenth century. We find that both capital and voting rights were diffuse by modern‐day standards. However, this does not necessarily mean that there was a modern‐style separation of ownership from control in Victorian Britain. One major implication of our findings is that diffuse ownership was present in the UK much earlier than previously thought, and given that it occurred in an era with weak shareholder protection law, it somewhat undermines the influential law and finance hypothesis. We also find that diffuse ownership is correlated with large boards, a London head office, non‐linear voting rights, and shares traded on multiple markets.

L-Lactate was produced from xylose using electrodialysis culture (ED-C)-associated product separation. In a medium containing 50 g xylose/l, the ED-C was completed in only 32 h (i.e. less than half the time taken by the control culture, without electrodialysis). At 80 g xylose/l, the control culture was unable to consume more than 50 g xylose/1, whereas the ED-C showed increased xylose consumption and was completed by 45 h. The maximum rate of lactate production in the ED-C was higher than that in the control culture. ED-C was also carried out (at 80 g initial xylose/ l) with a supply of fresh xylose-free medium. This ED-C was completed within 30 h, which represents a reduction in fermentation time of 15 h when compared to ED-C without addition of xylose-free medium. Thus, rapid production of L-lactate was achieved by using ED-C which supplied fresh xylose-free medium.

Background: Hirschsprung's disease is a congenital gut motility disorder, characterised by the absence of the enteric ganglion cells along the distal gut. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiology of Hirschsprung's disease, including additional congenital anomalies, total prevalence, trends, and association with maternal age. Methods: Cases of Hirschsprung's disease delivered during 1980 to 2009 notified to 31 European Surveillance of Congenital Anomaly registers formed the population-based case-series. Prevalence rates and 95% confidence intervals were calculated as the number of cases per 10,000 births. Multilevel Poisson regression was performed to investigate trends in prevalence, geographical variation and the association with maternal age. Results: There were 1,322 cases of Hirschsprung's disease among 12,146,210 births. The total prevalence was 1.09 (95% confidence interval, 1.03–1.15) per 10,000 births and there was a small but significant increase in prevalence over time (relative risk = 1.01; 95% credible interval, 1.00–1.02; p = 0.004). There was evidence of geographical heterogeneity in prevalence (p < 0.001). Excluding 146 (11.0%) cases with chromosomal anomalies or genetic syndromes, there were 1,176 cases (prevalence = 0.97; 95% confidence interval, 0.91–1.03 per 10,000 births), of which 137 (11.6%) had major structural anomalies. There was no evidence of a significant increased risk of Hirschsprung's disease in cases born to women aged ≥35 years compared with those aged 25 to 29 (relative risk = 1.09; 95% credible interval, 0.91–1.31; p = 0.355). Conclusion: This large population-based study found evidence of a small increasing trend in Hirschsprung's disease and differences in prevalence by geographic location. There was also no evidence of an association with maternal age.

Background
Preclinical evidence suggests that aspirin may inhibit lung cancer progression. In a large cohort of lung cancer patients, we investigated whether low-dose aspirin use was associated with a reduction in the risk of lung cancer-specific mortality.

Methods
We identified lung cancer patients from English cancer registries diagnosed between 1998 to 2009 from the National Cancer Data Repository. Medication usage was obtained from linkages to the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink and lung cancer-specific deaths were identified from Office of National Statistics mortality data. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for the association between low-dose aspirin use (before and after diagnosis) and risk of lung cancer-specific mortality were calculated using Cox regression models.

Results
A total of 14,735 lung cancer patients were identified during the study period. In analysis of 3,635 lung cancer patients, there was no suggestion of an association between low-dose aspirin use after diagnosis and cancer-specific mortality (adjusted HR = 0.96, 95 % CI: 0.85, 1.09). Similarly, no association was evident for low-dose aspirin use before diagnosis and cancer-specific mortality (adjusted HR = 1.00, 95 % CI: 0.95, 1.05). Associations were comparable by duration of use and for all-cause mortality.

Conclusion
Overall, we found little evidence of a protective association between low-dose aspirin use and cancer-specific mortality in a large population-based lung cancer cohort.

PURPOSE: To describe and evaluate a new method for measuring anterior chamber volume (ACV). DESIGN: Observational case series. METHODS: The authors measured ACV using the anterior chamber (AC) optical coherence tomographer (OCT) and applied image-processing software developed by them. Repeatability was evaluated. The ACV was measured in patient groups with normal ACs, shallow ACs, and deep ACs. The volume difference before and after laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) was analyzed for the shallow and deep groups. RESULTS: Coefficients of repeatability for intraoperator, interoperator, and interimage measurements were 0.406%, 0.958%, and 0.851%, respectively. The limits of agreement for intraoperator and interoperator measurement were -0.911 microl to 1.343 microl and -7.875 microl to -2.463 microl, respectively. There were significant ACV differences in normal, shallow, and deep AC eyes (P < .001) and before and after LPI in shallow AC (P < .001) and deep AC (P = .008) eyes. CONCLUSIONS: The ACV values obtained by this method were repeatable and in accord with clinical observation.
