Hot molecular cores in star-forming regions are known to have gas-phase chemical compositions determined by the material evaporated from the icy mantles of interstellar grains, followed by subsequent reactions in the gas phase. Current models suggest that the evaporated material is rich in hydrogenated species. In this paper, we consider the chemistry induced in a hot core by the release of phosphine, PH3 from interstellar grains. We find that PH3 is rapidly destroyed by a series of reactions with atomic hydrogen and is converted, within 10(4) yr, into atomic P, and PO and PN, with P atoms being the most abundant species. Other P-bearing molecules can be formed in the hot gas, but on time-scales that are long compared to those of the hot cores.

We report the results of a synoptic survey at 14 sites across the north of Ireland undertaken to determine the occurrence of cyanobacteria and their constituent microcystin cyanotoxins. Seven microcystin toxins were tested for, and five of which were found, with MC-LR, MC-RR, and MC-YR being the most prevalent. Gomphosphaeria spp and Microcystis aeruginosa were the most dominant cyanobacterial species encountered. Together with Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, these were the cyanobacteria associated with the highest microcystin concentrations. The occurrence of several microcystin toxins indicates that there may potentially be more than one cyanobacteria species producing microcystins at many sites. Total microcystin concentrations varied over three orders of magnitude dividing the sites into two groups of high (>1000 ngMC/μgChla, six sites) or low toxicity (<200 ngMC/μgChla, eight sites). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A time-resolved Langmuir probe technique is used to measure the dependence of the electron density, electron temperature, plasma potential and electron energy distribution function (EEDF) on the phase of the driving voltage in a RF driven parallel plate discharge. The measurements were made in a low-frequency (100-500 kHz), symmetrically driven, radio frequency discharge operating in H-2, D-2 and Ar at gas pressures of a few hundred millitorr. The EEDFs could not be represented by a single Maxwellian distribution and resembled the time averaged EEDFs reported in 13.56 MHz discharges. The measured parameters showed structure in their spatial and temporal dependence, generally consistent with a simple oscillating sheath model. Electron temperatures of less than 0.1 eV were measured during the phase of the RF cycle when both electrodes are negative with respect to the plasma.

The effects of incorporating pulverized fuel ash (PFA) and ground granulated blastfurnace slag (ggbs) on the workability (slump), adiabatic temperature rise during hydration and long-term (up to 570 days) strength of high-strength concretes have been measured. Binary (PFA/ggbs and Portland cement) and ternary (PFA/ggbs plus microsilica and Portland cement) blends at water-binder ratios from 0.38 to 0.20 have been tested. The results show broadly similar effects to those in lower strength concrete, although of differing magnitude in some cases. Some potential advantages of ternary blends for optimization of properties have been demonstrated.

Protein kinases C are a family of serine threonine protein kinases that play key roles in extracellular signal transduction. Inappropriate activation of protein kinase C has been implicated in the pathophysiology of many diseases, including diabetes mellitus. Indeed, protein kinase C activation may contribute not only to the pathogenesis of diabetic complications such as nephropathy and retinopathy, but also to insulin resistance. Growing awareness that protein kinase C isoforms subserve specific subcellular functions has led to the development of isoform-specific inhibitors, which may be useful investigational tools and therapeutic agents for attenuating the effects of inappropriate protein kinase C activity. Here we review the role played by protein kinases C in diabetic nephropathy and the recent progress that has been made to modulate its activity using specific inhibitors. Learning difficulties in preterm infants are thought to reflect impairment in arousal regulation. We examined relationships among gestational age, learning speed, and behavioral and physiological reactivity in 55 preterm and 49 full-term infants during baseline, contingency, and nonreinforcement phases of a conjugate mobile paradigm at 3 months corrected age. For all infants, negative affect, looking duration, and heart rate levels increased during contingency and nonreinforcement phases, whereas respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA, an index of parasympathetic activity) decreased and cortisol did not change. Learners showed greater RSA suppression and less negative affect than nonlearners. This pattern was particularly evident in the preterm group. Overall, preterm infants showed less learning, spent less time looking at the mobile, and had lower cortisol levels than full-term infants. Preterm infants also showed greater heart rate responses to contingency and dampened heart rate responses to nonreinforcement compared to full-term infants. Findings underscore differences in basal and reactivity measures in preterm compared to full-term infants and suggest that the capacity to regulate parasympathetic activity during a challenge enhances learning in preterm infants.

Children with neurologic impairments have shown diminished pain response compared with control subjects; however, it remains unclear what mechanisms underlie this response or when it develops. If this were also true with premature infants who undergo neonatal intensive care, then infants with parenchymal brain injury (PBI) would be at increased risk of underrecognition and undertreatment of procedural pain. The purpose of this study was to determine whether infants with PBI display altered responses to acute procedural pain at 32 weeks' postconceptional age (PCA), compared with control subjects.

Immunohistochemistry of histologically negative axillary lymph nodes in breast-cancer patients resulted in upstaging of the sentinel lymph node in eight (14%) of 52 patients, The resulting information altered clinical management in six of these patients. Thus, this technique may affect clinical decision-making in breast-cancer patients.
