Sphagnum mosses are major components of peat bogs but populations of many species are under threat due to habitat fragmentation resulting from the cutting of peat for fuel. We have used an intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR)-based cloning method to develop nine polymorphic nuclear microsatellites for the peat moss species Sphagnum capillifolium. Between three and seven alleles per locus were detected in a sample of 48 haploid gametophytes and levels of gene diversity ranged from 0.5391 to 0.7960. These represent the first microsatellite markers developed for this important genus and most also exhibited cross-species amplification across a range of common Sphagnum species.

CO dissociation and O removal (water formation) are two important processes in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In this study, both processes are studied on the flat and stepped Co(0 0 0 1) using density functional theory. It is found that (i) it is difficult for CO to dissociate on the flat Co(0 0 0 1) due to the high barrier of 1.04 eV relative to the CO molecule in the gas phase; (ii) the stepped Co(0 0 0 1) is much more favoured for CO dissociation; (iii) the first step in water formation, O + H --> OH, is unlikely to occur on the flat Co(0 0 0 1) due to the high barrier of 1.72 eV, however, this reaction can become feasible on steps where the barrier is reduced to 0.73 eV; and (iv) the barrier in the second step, OH + H --> H2O, on steps is higher than that on the flat surface. Objective: To examine the association between dietary glycemic index (GI), glycemic load (GL), total carbohydrate, sugars, starch, and fiber intakes and the risk of reflux esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus, and esophageal adenocarcinoma.
Methods: In an all-Ireland study, dietary information was collected from patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma (n = 224), long-segment Barrett’s esophagus (n = 220), reflux esophagitis (n = 219), and population-based controls (n = 256). Multiple logistic regression analysis examined the association between dietary variables and disease risk by tertiles of intake and as continuous variables, while adjusting for potential confounders.
Results: Reflux esophagitis risk was positively associated with starch intake and negatively associated with sugar intake. Barrett’s esophagus risk was significantly reduced in people in the highest versus the lowest tertile of fiber intake (OR 0.44 95%CI 0.25–0.80). Fiber intake was also associated with a reduced risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma, as was total carbohydrate intake (OR 0.45 95%CI 0.33–0.61 per 50 g/d increase). However, an increased esophageal adenocarcinoma risk was detected per 10 unit increase in GI intake (OR 1.42 95%CI 1.07–1.89).
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that fiber intake is inversely associated with Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma risk. Esophageal adenocarcinoma risk is inversely associated with total carbohydrate consumption but positively associated with high GI intakes.
