The focused ion beam microscope has been used to cut parallel-sided {100}-oriented thin lamellae of single crystal barium titanate with controlled thicknesses, ranging from 530 nm to 70 nm. Scanning transmission electron microscopy has been used to examine domain configurations. In all cases, stripe domains were observed with {011}-type domain walls in perovskite unit-cell axes, suggesting 90 degrees domains with polarization in the plane of the lamellae. The domain widths were found to vary as the square root of the lamellar thickness, consistent with Kittel's law, and its later development by Mitsui and Furuichi and by Roytburd. An investigation into the manner in which domain period adapts to thickness gradient was undertaken on both wedge-shaped lamellae and lamellae with discrete terraces. It was found that when the thickness gradient was perpendicular to the domain walls, a continuous change in domain periodicity occurred, but if the thickness gradient was parallel to the domain walls, periodicity changes were accommodated through discrete domain bifurcation. Data were then compared with other work in literature, on both ferroelectric and ferromagnetic systems, from which conclusions on the widespread applicability of Kittel's law in ferroics were made.

Dielectronic recombination (DR) has been studied in highly charged He-like Ti ions using an electron beam ion trap. X-rays emitted from radiative recombination (RR) and DR were observed as the electron beam energy was scanned through the resonances. Differential DR resonant strengths were determined by normalizing the DR x-ray intensity to the RR intensity using theoretical RR cross sections. KLn (2 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 5) resonant strengths were determined for He-like Ti ions. The differential resonant strengths were calibrated without reference to any theoretical DR calculations while the electron energy scale was derived with reference to the well-known energy for ionization of the He-like and H-like ions from the ground state. Calibration in this way facilitates a more exacting comparison between theory and experiment than has been reported previously. To facilitate this comparison, total and differential theoretical resonance strengths were calculated. These calculations were found to be in good agreement with the measured results.

Two extreme pictures of electron-phonon interactions in nanoscale conductors are compared: one in which the vibrations are treated as independent Einstein atomic oscillators, and one in which electrons are allowed to couple to the full, extended phonon modes of the conductor. It is shown that, under a broad range of conditions, the full-mode picture and the Einstein picture produce essentially the same net power at any given atom in the nanojunction. The two pictures begin to differ significantly in the limit of low lattice temperature and low applied voltages, where electron-phonon scattering is controlled by the detailed phonon energy spectrum. As an illustration of the behaviour in this limit, we study the competition between trapped vibrational modes and extended modes in shaping the inelastic current-voltage characteristics of one-dimensional atomic wires.

Objective: to investigate the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol; THC on human sperm function in vitro. Design: laboratory analysis of sperm motility with and without exposure to THC using computer assisted semen analysis (CASA) and acrosome reaction by fluoroscein isothiocyanate labelled peanut agglutinin (FITC-PNA) staining. Setting: An ART unit in a tertiary medical centre. Patients: semen was obtained from 78 men attending the Regional Fertility Centre, Belfast. Interventions: Sperm were divided into 90% (the best fertilizing potential used in assisted conception) and 45% (the poorer subpopulation) fractions by density centrifugation and incubated with, or without (controls), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) at concentrations equivalent to therapeutic (0.032�?�¯?�?�­M) and recreational (4.8 and 0.32�?�¯?�?�­M) plasma levels, at 37�?�¯?�?�°C for 3 hours. Main outcome measures: Sperm motility, spontaneous and induced acrosome reactions Results: There was a dose-dependent decrease in percentage progressive motility (-21% at 4.8�??�?�µM, p0.05) in the 90% fraction. The 45% fraction showed a greater decrease in percentage progressive motility (-56% at 4.8�??�?�µM, p=0.011; -23% at 0.32�??�?�µM, p= 0.039; and -28% at 0.032�??�?�µM, p=0.004). A decrease in the straight line velocity; VSL (-10%) and the average path velocity; VAP (-10%) were also observed in the 90% fraction. Decreased survival in patients with cystic fibrosis has been related to FEV1, BMI, and infection with Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC). We have assessed the relationship of blood, sputum, and urine inflammatory markers to lung function, BMI, colonization with B cenocepacia (Bc), and patient survival. Thirty-nine stable cystic fibrosis (CF) patients (10 with Bc) were enrolled in a study to determine the effect of alpha-1-antitrypsin on airways inflammation. Pre-treatment measurements were used in this study. Demographics, sputum microbiology, heart rate, oxygen saturation, lung function were recorded. Blood samples were obtained for white blood count (WBC), C-Reactive Protein (CRP), and plasma neutrophil elastase/AAT complexes (pNEC). Neutrophil elastase (NE), neutrophil elastase/AAT complexes (sNEC), interleukin-8 (IL-8), TNF-receptor 1 (sTNFr), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were measured in sputum and urinary desmosine concentration determined. Patients with Bc had significantly higher levels of pNEC, 332?±?91.4 ng/ml (mean?±?SEM) versus 106?±?18.2 ng/ml (P?=?0.0005) and sNEC, 369?±?76.6 ng/ml versus 197?±?36.0 ng/ml compared to those who were not. Five deaths were reported at the end of 1 year, (four with Bc) (P?=?0.011). Patients who subsequently died had significantly lower lung function FEV1, 1.2?±?0.2 L versus 2.0?±?0.1 L (P?=?0.03) and FVC, 2?±?0.3 L versus 3.1?±?0.2 L (P?=?0.01), compared to those that survived. There was significantly higher NE activity, 3.6?±?1.6 U/ml versus 1.5?±?0.6 U/ml (P?=?0.03), pNEC, 274?±?99 ng/ml versus 142?±?30 ng/ml (P?=?0.05), MPO, 163?±?62 mcg/ml versus 54?±?6.9 mcg/ml (P?=?0.03), and urinary desmosines 108?±?19.9 pM/mg creatinine versus 51.1?±?3.3 pM/mg creatinine (P?=?0.001), in those patients who subsequently died compared to those that survived. These data suggest there is increased neutrophil degranulation in patients infected with Bc and these patients have a poor outcome.

To assess 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) techniques to see whether doses to critical structures could be reduced while maintaining planning target volume (PTV) coverage in patients receiving conventional radiotherapy (RT) for carcinoma of the maxillary sinus because of the risk of radiation-induced complications, particularly visual loss. Six patients who had recently received conventional RT for carcinoma of the maxillary sinus were studied. Conventional RT, 3D-CRT, and step-and-shoot IMRT plans were prepared using the same 2-field arrangement. The effect of reducing the number of segments in the IMRT beams was investigated. 3D-CRT and IMRT reduced the brain and ipsilateral parotid gland doses compared with the conventional plans. IMRT reduced doses to both optic nerves; for the contralateral optic nerve, 15-segment IMRT plans delivered an average maximal dose of 56.4 Gy (range 53.9–59.3) compared with 65.7 Gy (range 65.3–65.9) and 64.2 Gy (range 61.4–65.6) for conventional RT and 3D-CRT, respectively. Conducting polypyrrole is a biological compatible polymer matrix wherein number of drugs and enzymes can be incorporated by way of doping. The polypyrrole, which is obtained as freestanding film by electrochemical polymerization, has gained tremendous recognition as sophisticated electronic measuring device in the field of sensors and drug delivery. In drug delivery the reversing of the potential 100% of the drug can be released and is highly efficient as a biosensor in presence of an enzyme. In this review we discuss the applications of conducting polypyrrole as biosensor for some biomolecules and drug delivery systems.

Sexual cannibalism, where a female kills and consumes a courting male, represents an extreme form of sexual conflict and has been proposed as a mechanism of mate choice. We evaluate the evidence for mate choice through premating sexual cannibalism via mate rejection, other indirect mechanisms of mate 'choice' and choice in postmating sexual cannibalism. We highlight a paucity of investigations, particularly of field studies, and note gaps in our knowledge. There is empirical support for the size-dependent sexual cannibalism predicted by mate choice through premating sexual cannibalism. This may represent mate choice operating on absolute male size but it could be a by-product of female foraging behaviour and greater vulnerability of relatively smaller males. Thus, indirect mate choice is as plausible an explanation of size-dependent sexual cannibalism as is direct mate choice based on discrimination of male traits. Direct female choice, mediated through premating sexual cannibalism, has yet to be demonstrated. We suggest a framework for distinguishing direct and indirect choice and note an absence of information on which to test it. There is evidence for sequential mate choice in postmating sexual cannibalism, but the nature or basis of the female's discriminatory behaviour remains unclear. Costs and long-term fitness benefits of the putative mate choice have been largely ignored. Reversed sexual cannibalism, in which the male eats the female, presumably occurs when the gain from food is high and potential gain from mating low and probably has little to do with mate choice. The only available parasiticides with a spectrum of action that includes a broad range of helminth and arthropod parasites are the macrocyclic lactones. Designated endectocides, these drugs have action against both endoparasitic nematodes and ectoparasitic arthropods. Unfortunately, the discovery of such drugs is exceedingly rare and there is no evidence that novel endectocidal agents will be identified and developed in the short to medium term. However, the discovery of neuropeptides with motor-modulatory activities in both arthropods and helminths, coupled with recent progress in the characterization of invertebrate neuropeptide receptors, has the potential to propel neuropeptide signalling to the forefront of efforts to develop a novel endectocide.

The substituted tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) complexes {[Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-bbob)](2+) and [Ru(bpy)(2)(5,5'-bbob)](2+) [where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine and bbob = bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine] have been prepared and compared to the previously studied complex [Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-bbtb)](2+) [where bbtb = bis(benzothiazol-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine]. From the UV/VIS titration studies, Delta-[Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'bbob)](2+) displays a stronger association than the Lambda-isomer with calf-thymus DNA (ct-DNA). For [Ru(bpy)(2)(5,5'-bbob)](2+), there appears to be minimal interaction with ct-DNA. The results of fluorescence titration studies suggest that [Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-bbob)](2+) gives an increase in emission intensity with increasing ct-DNA concentrations, with an enantiopreference for the A isomer, confirmed by membrane dialysis studies. The fluorescent intercalation displacement studies revealed that [Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-bbob)](2+) and [Ru.(bpy)(2)(5,5'bbob)](2+) display a preference for more open DNA structures such as bulge and hairpin sequences. While Delta-[Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-bbtb)](2+) has shown the most significant affinity for all the oligonucleotides sequences screened in previous studies, it is the A isomer of the comparable benzoxazole ruthenium(II) complex (Delta-[Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-bbob)](2+)) that preferentially binds to DNA.

A problem with use of the geostatistical Kriging error for optimal sampling design is that the design does not adapt locally to the character of spatial variation. This is because a stationary variogram or covariance function is a parameter of the geostatistical model. The objective of this paper was to investigate the utility of non-stationary geostatistics for optimal sampling design. First, a contour data set of Wiltshire was split into 25 equal sub-regions and a local variogram was predicted for each. These variograms were fitted with models and the coefficients used in Kriging to select optimal sample spacings for each sub-region. Large differences existed between the designs for the whole region (based on the global variogram) and for the sub-regions (based on the local variograms). Second, a segmentation approach was used to divide a digital terrain model into separate segments. Segment-based variograms were predicted and fitted with models. Optimal sample spacings were then determined for the whole region and for the sub-regions. It was demonstrated that the global design was inadequate, grossly over-sampling some segments while under-sampling others.
