The origin of the unusual 90 degrees ferroelectric/ferroelastic domains, consistently observed in recent studies on mesoscale and nanoscale free-standing single crystals of BaTiO3 [Schilling , Phys. Rev. B 74, 024115 (2006); Schilling , Nano Lett. 7, 3787 (2007)], has been considered. A model has been developed which postulates that the domains form as a response to elastic stress induced by a surface layer which does not undergo the paraelectric-ferroelectric cubic-tetragonal phase transition. This model was found to accurately account for the changes in domain periodicity as a function of size that had been observed experimentally. The physical origin of the surface layer might readily be associated with patterning damage, seen in experiment; however, when all evidence of physical damage is removed from the BaTiO3 surfaces by thermal annealing, the domain configuration remains practically unchanged. This suggests a more intrinsic origin, such as the increased importance of surface tension at small dimensions. The effect of surface tension is also shown to be proportional to the difference in hardness between the surface and the interior of the ferroelectric. The present model for surface-tension induced twinning should also be relevant for finely grained or core-shell structured ceramics.

The interaction of a 3x10(19) W/cm(2) laser pulse with a metallic wire has been investigated using proton radiography. The pulse is observed to drive the propagation of a highly transient field along the wire at the speed of light. Within a temporal window of 20 ps, the current driven by this field rises to its peak magnitude similar to 10(4) A before decaying to below measurable levels. Supported by particle-in-cell simulation results and simple theoretical reasoning, the transient field measured is interpreted as a charge-neutralizing disturbance propagated away from the interaction region as a result of the permanent loss of a small fraction of the laser-accelerated hot electron population to vacuum.

It has previously been postulated that L-arginine emitted by penetrating Schistosoma mansoni cercariae serves as an intraspecific signal guiding other cercariae to the penetration site. It was suggested that penetrating in groups offers a selective advantage. If this hypothesis is correct and group penetration at one site on the host offers an advantage, it would follow that at such a site, successive groups of cercariae would be able to penetrate skin in either greater numbers or at a faster rate. This prediction was tested by the use of an in vitro model of cercarial penetration based on the Franz cell and using human skin. It was demonstrated that there was no increase in the percentage of cercariae able to penetrate the skin with subsequent exposures. Consequently, it seems unlikely that the release of L-arginine by cercariae during penetration could have evolved as a specific orientation system based on a selective advantage offered by group penetration.

In dielectronic recombination of hydrogenlike ions an intermediate doubly excited heliumlike ion is formed. Since the K shell is empty, both excited electrons can decay sequentially to the ground state. In this paper we analyze the x-ray radiation emitted from doubly and singly excited heliumlike titanium ions produced inside the Tokyo electron beam ion trap. Theoretical population densities of the singly excited states after the first transition and the transition probabilities of these states into the ground state were also calculated. This allowed theoretical branching ratios to be determined for each manifold. These branching ratios are compared to the experimentally obtained x-ray distribution by fitting across the relevant peak using a convolution of the theoretically obtained resonance strengths and energies. By taking into account 2E1 transitions which are not observed in the experiment, the measured and calculated ratios agree well. This method provides a valuable insight into the transition dynamics of excited highly charged ions.

Highly charged ions have been used to study the sputtering of positive molecular fragments from mercaptoundecanoic acid and dodecanethiol self-assembled monolayers on gold surfaces. The samples were bombarded with Arq+ (42n+, and Cn+1O2H2n + 1+ from mercaptoundecanoic and H+, CnH2n+, and Cn+1H2n + 3+ from dodecanethiol. The proton yields were increased with larger charge state q of the highly charged ion (HCI) in both samples, scaling as qgamma, with gamma~5. The charge state dependence is discussed in terms of electron transfer to the HCI. The final yield of protons depends on molecular functional group characteristics, orientation on the surface, and reneutralization phenomena.

Self-affine dehydrated colloidal deposits on fresh mica surfaces of the synthetic layered silicate 2:1 smectite clay laponite have been studied by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM images of these prepared assemblies of sol and gel aggregates have been analyzed both by means of standard AFM Fourier software and a wavelet method. The deposited surfaces show a persistence to antipersistent crossover with a clay concentration dependent crossover length. It is concluded that the crossover length is associated with aggregate size, and further that the persistent roughness at small length scales signals near compact clusters of fractal dimension three, whereas the antipersistent roughness at large length scales signals a sedimentation process.

Raman satellites have been observed in the scattering of a Nd:YAG laser (532 nm) from a laser-ablated Mg plasma plume. We identify them as originating from transitions between the fine-structure components of the metastable 3s3p P-3(0,1,2) level of Mg. We have calculated the cross sections for Raman and Rayleigh scattering from the metastable state. Comparison of the expected ratio of the satellites to the Rayleigh peak indicates the changing population fraction of the metastable states in the plume.

We demonstrate numerically the existence of a spin-motive force acting on spin carriers when moving in a time and space dependent internal ?eld. This is the case for electrons in a one-dimensional wire with a precessing domain wall. The effect can be explained solely by adiabatic dynamics and is shown to exist for both classical and quantum systems.

The long, parallel fields of the marshlands between the Fens and the Humber estuary in eastern England, which are recorded on nineteenth-century maps, were the result of the division of the wetlands that occurred particularly during the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. Areas of common fen pasture were partitioned between tenants to provide land for grazing and arable. Similar division also took place on the coastal strip and in the peat fen for land for salt-making and cutting fuel. These long strips, known as dales, are compared to similar areas in open fields in parts of Yorkshire and Northamptonshire, which have been discussed elsewhere. It is argued that the field shape is the result of a type of division in eastern England in which considerable emphasis was placed on case of partitioning land equitably.

We present a general method to construct a set of local rectilinear vibrational coordinates for a nonlinear molecule whose reference structure does not necessarily correspond to a stationary point of the potential-energy surface. We show both analytically and with a numerical example that the vibrational coordinates satisfy Eckart's conditions. In addition, we find that the Watson Hamiltonian provides a fairly robust description even of highly excited vibrational states of triatomic molecules, except for a few states of large amplitude motion sampling the singular region of the Hamiltonian. These states can be identified through slow convergence.

An exact and general approach to study molecular vibrations is provided by the Watson Hamiltonian. Within this framework, it is customary to omit the contribution of the terms with the vibrational angular momentum and the Watson term, especially for the study of large systems. We discover that this omission leads to results which depend on the choice of the reference structure. The self-consistent solution proposed here yields a geometry that coincides with the quantum averaged geometry of the Watson Hamiltonian and appears to be a promising way for the computation of the vibrational spectra of strongly anharmonic systems.
