Objective
To investigate the effect of fast food consumption on mean population body mass index (BMI) and explore the possible influence of market deregulation on fast food consumption and BMI.
Methods
The within-country association between fast food consumption and BMI in 25 high-income member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development between 1999 and 2008 was explored through multivariate panel regression models, after adjustment for per capita gross domestic product, urbanization, trade openness, lifestyle indicators and other covariates. The possible mediating effect of annual per capita intake of soft drinks, animal fats and total calories on the association between fast food consumption and BMI was also analysed. Two-stage least squares regression models were conducted, using economic freedom as an instrumental variable, to study the causal effect of fast food consumption on BMI.
Findings
After adjustment for covariates, each 1-unit increase in annual fast food transactions per capita was associated with an increase of 0.033 kg/m2 in age-standardized BMI (95% confidence interval, CI: 0.013–0.052). Only the intake of soft drinks – not animal fat or total calories – mediated the observed association (β: 0.030; 95% CI: 0.010–0.050). Economic freedom was an independent predictor of fast food consumption (β: 0.27; 95% CI: 0.16–0.37). When economic freedom was used as an instrumental variable, the association between fast food and BMI weakened but remained significant (β: 0.023; 95% CI: 0.001–0.045).
Conclusion
Fast food consumption is an independent predictor of mean BMI in high-income countries. Market deregulation policies may contribute to the obesity epidemic by facilitating the spread of fast food.

The collision of two plasma clouds at a speed that exceeds the ion acoustic speed can result in the formation of shocks. This phenomenon is observed not only in astrophysical scenarios, such as the propagation of supernova remnant (SNR) blast shells into the interstellar medium, but also in laboratory-based laser-plasma experiments. These experiments and supporting simulations are thus seen as an attractive platform for small-scale reproduction and study of astrophysical shocks in the laboratory. We model two plasma clouds, which consist of electrons and ions, with a 2D particle-in-cell simulation. The ion temperatures of both clouds differ by a factor of ten. Both clouds collide at a speed that is realistic for laboratory studies and for SNR shocks in their late evolution phase, like that of RCW86. A magnetic field, which is orthogonal to the simulation plane, has a strength that is comparable to that of SNR shocks. A forward shock forms between the overlap layer of both plasma clouds and the cloud with cooler ions. A large-amplitude ion acoustic wave is observed between the overlap layer and the cloud with hotter ions. It does not steepen into a reverse shock because its speed is below the ion acoustic speed. A gradient of the magnetic field amplitude builds up close to the forward shock as it compresses the magnetic field. This gradient gives rise to an electron drift that is fast enough to trigger an instability. Electrostatic ion acoustic wave turbulence develops ahead of the shock, widens its transition layer, and thermalizes the ions, but the forward shock remains intact. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

The relativistic R-matrix method is used to calculate elastic and inelastic cross sections for electrons incident on caesium atoms with energies from 0-3 eV. These cross sections reveal a wealth of resonance structure in this energy range. The differential cross sections as well as the spin polarisation function S( theta ) and the left-right asymmetry function S( theta ) are calculated and enable conclusions to be drawn on the importance of spin-dependent interactions.
An investigation of the ((3p)(4s) ) resonances in the elastic scattering of electrons by argon atoms
Resumo:
Initial results are presented on the elastic scattering of electrons by argon atoms in the neighbourhood of the well known ((3p) (4s)) resonances. An R-matrix calculation is employed to investigate how the resonance characteristics change as the spin-orbit interaction is switched on.

The relativistic R-matrix method is used to calculate elastic and inelastic cross sections for electrons incident on caesium atoms with energies from 0-3 eV. In addition to the total cross sections, results are presented on the differential cross sections, sigma , and the spin polarisation, P, of the scattered electrons as a function of energy at the scattering angles 10 degrees , 50 degrees , 90 degrees and 150 degrees . The calculation reveals a wealth of resonances around the P and P thresholds. The resonances are analysed in detail and their role in the scattering process is discussed.

Phaseshifts, differential, total and momentum transfer cross sections are calculated using an R-matrix approach for the elastic scattering of electrons by argon atoms in the impact energy range 0-19 eV. The coupled-state calculation is based upon a single-configuration atomic ground-state wavefunction coupled to a P pseudostate. A critical assessment of earlier theoretical and experimental data is made and the conclusion is reached that the present results are the most satisfactory over the entire energy range considered.

The performance of NOx storage and reduction over 1.5 wt% Pt/20 wt% KNO3/K2Ti8O17 and 1.5 wt% Pt/K2Ti8O17 catalysts has been investigated using combined fast transient kinetic switching and isotopically labelled (NO)-N-15 at 350 degrees C. The evolution of product N-2 has revealed two significant peaks during 60 s lean/1.3 s rich switches. It also found that the presence of CO2 in the feed affects the release of N-2 in the second peak. Regardless of the presence/absence of water in the feed, only one peak of N-2 was observed in the absence of CO2. Gas-phase NH3 was not observed in any of the experiments. However, in the presence of CO2 the results obtained from in situ DRIFTS-MS analysis showed that isocyanate species are formed and stored during the rich cycles, probably from the reaction between NOx and CO, in which CO was formed via the reverse water-gas shift reaction.

NanoStreams is a consortium project funded by the European Commission under its FP7 programme and is a major effort to address the challenges of processing vast amounts of data in real-time, with a markedly lower carbon footprint than the state of the art. The project addresses both the energy challenge and the high-performance required by emerging applications in real-time streaming data analytics. NanoStreams achieves this goal by designing and building disruptive micro-server solutions incorporating real-silicon prototype micro-servers based on System-on-Chip and reconfigurable hardware technologies.
