Robust, bilayer heterojunction photodiodes of TiO2-WO3 were prepared successfully by a simple, low-cost powder pressing technique followed by heat-treatment. Exclusive photoirradiation of the TiO2 side of the photodiode resulted in a rapid colour change (dark blue) on the WO3 surface as a result of reduction of W6+ to W5+ (confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). This colour was long lived and shown to be stable in a dry environment in air for several hours. A similar photoirradiation experiment in the presence of a mask showed that charge transfer across the heterojunction occurred approximately normal to the TiO2 surface, with little smearing out of the mask image. As a result of the highly efficient vectorial charge separation, the photodiodes showed a tremendous increase in photocatalytic activity for the degradation of stearic acid, compared to wafers of the respective individual materials when tested separately.

This article examines resource nationalism in sub-Saharan Africa's energy and minerals markets. It does so by exploring economic and political developments in three cases: Nigeria as an example of a petro-state established by means of expropriation in the wake of decolonisation; South Africa, a mature mining industry shaped by its settler colonial history; and Mozambique, a new and therefore highly-dependent entrant into the league of significant natural gas producers. Extractive industries have played a controversial role in sub-Saharan Africa due in particular to the prevalence of the resource curse. Nevertheless, energy exports will continue to play an important role in fuelling economic growth and, potentially, also development as new deposits of natural gas and oil are discovered across the region. Resource nationalism has, moreover, increasingly constrained operations of the traditionally dominant Western energy companies, in particular as competition from state-owned energy companies in sub-Saharan Africa and from emerging powers such as China is increasing.

The reaction mechanism of CO and Fe2O3 in a chemical-looping combustion (CLC) was studied based on density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP level in this paper. The structures of all reactants, intermediate, transition structures and products of this reaction had been optimized and characterized. The reaction path was validated by means of the intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) approach. The result showed that the reaction was divided into two steps, the adsorbed CO molecule on Fe 2O3 surface formed a medium state with one broken Fe-O bond in step1, and in step2, O atom broken here oxidized a subsequent CO molecule in the fuel reactor. Thus, Fe2O3 molecule transport O from air to oxide CO continually in the CLC process. The activation energy and rate coefficients of the two steps were also obtained.

A tridimensional model of α-Fe2O3 and models of (0001) and (1102) surfaces on it were built. Then the structural optimization of the (0001) surface was presented which explored the influence of the system scale and the terminal surface configuration. Four different models including two different system scale structures (MODEL□ and MODEL□) and two different terminal structures (MODEL□ and MODEL□) were analyzed in this paper. It was concluded that the boundary effect was more important in a smaller system in the structure optimization. And the Fe-terminated was more stable than the O-terminated structure which was agreed with the experiences, this structural model can be used in further work including the monatomic adsorption/desorption and the chemical reactions on this surface.

The adsorption of C atoms on the α-Fe2O3 (001) surface was studied based on density function theory (DFT), in which the exchange-correlation potential was chosen as the PBE (Perdew, Burke and Ernzerhof) generalized gradient approximation (GGA) with a plane wave basis set. Upon the optimization on different adsorption sites with coverage of 1/20 and 1/5 ML, it was found that the adsorption of C atoms on the α-Fe 2O3 (001) surface was chemical adsorption. The coverage can affect the adsorption behavior greatly. Under low coverage, the most stable adsorption geometry lied on the bridged site with the adsorption energy of about 3.22 eV; however, under high coverage, it located at the top site with the energy change of 8.79 eV. Strong chemical reaction has occurred between the C and O atoms at this site. The density of states and population analysis showed that the s, p orbitals of C and p orbital of O give the most contribution to the adsorption bonding. During the adsorption process, O atom shares the electrons with C, and C can only affect the outermost and subsurface layers of α-Fe2O3; the third layer can not be affected obviously. InP(1 0 0) surfaces were sputtered under ultrahigh vacuum conditions by 5 keV N2+ ions at an angle of incidence of 41° to the sample normal. The fluence, φ, used in this study, varied from 1 × 1014 to 5 × 1018 N2+ cm-2. The surface topography was investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). At the lower fluences (φ ≤ 5 × 1016 N2+ cm-2) only conelike features appeared, similar in shape as was found for noble gas ion bombardment of InP. At the higher fluences, ripples also appeared on the surface. The bombardment-induced topography was quantified using the rms roughness. This parameter showed a linear relationship with the logarithm of the fluence. A model is presented to explain this relationship. The ripple wavelength was also determined using a Fourier transform method. These measurements as a function of fluence do not agree with the predictions of the Bradley-Harper theory. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Spatial variability of conductivity in ceria is explored using scanning probe microscopy (SPM) with galvanostatic control. Ionically blocking electrodes are used to probe the conductivity under opposite polarities to reveal possible differences in the defect structure across a thin film of CeO2. Data suggests the existence of a large spatial inhomogeneity that could give rise to constant phase elements during standard electrochemical characterization, potentially affecting the overall conductivity of films on the macroscale. The approach discussed here can also be utilized for other mixed ionic electronic conductor (MIEC) systems including memristors and electroresistors, as well as physical systems such as ferroelectric tunneling barriers.

We have previously reported the effectiveness of TiO2 photocatalysis in the destruction of species generated by cyanobacteria, specifically geosmin and microcystin-LR. In this paper we report an investigation of factors which influence the rate of the toxin destruction at the catalyst surface. A primary kinetic solvent isotope effect of approximately 1.5 was observed when the destruction was performed in a heavy water solvent. This is in contrast to previous reports of a solvent isotope effect of approximately 3, however, these studies were undertaken with a different photocatalyst material. The solvent isotope effect therefore appears to be dependent on the photocatalyst material used. The results of the study support the theory that the photocatalytic decomposition occurs on the catalyst surface rather than in the bulk of the solution. Furthermore it appears that the rate determining step is not oxygen reduction as previously reported.

The efficacy of TiO 2 photocatalysis for the destruction of pathogenic bacteria has been demonstrated by a number of groups over the past two decades. Pathogenic bacteria represent a significant hazard for the food and drink industry. Current practices in this industry dictate that rigorous sanitizing regimes must be regularly implemented resulting in lost production time. The incorporation of a TiO 2 antibacterial surface coating in this setting would be highly desirable. In this paper we report a preliminary study of the efficacy of a TiO 2 coating, doped with the lanthanide, neodymium, at low temperature conditions such as those utilised in the food and drink sector. The rapid destruction of Staphylococcus aureus, a common foodborne pathogen, was observed using TiO 2 films coated to glass and steel substrates.

Visible-light-activated yellow amorphous TiO2 (yam- TiO 2) was synthesised by a simple and organic-free precipitation method. TiN, an alternative precursor for TiO2 preparation, was dissolved in hydrogen peroxide under acidic condition (pH∼1) adjusted by nitric acid. The yellow precipitate was obtained after adjusting pH of the resultant red brown solution to 2 with NH4OH. The BET surface area of this sample was 261 m2/g. The visible light photoactivity was evaluated on the basis of the photobleaching of methylene blue (MB) in an aqueous solution by using a 250 W metal halide bulb equipped with UV cutoff filter (λ>420 nm) under aerobic conditions. Yam- TiO2 exhibits an interesting property of being both surface adsorbent and photoactive under visible light. It was assigned to the η2-peroxide, an active intermediate form of the addition of H2O2 into crystallined TiO2 photocatalyst. It can be concluded that an active intermediate form of titanium peroxo species in photocatalytic process can be synthesised and used as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysis has been used to initiate the destruction of nodularin, a natural hepatotoxin produced by cyanobacteria. The destruction process was monitored using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis which has also enabled the identification of a number of the photocatalytic decomposition products. The reduction in toxicity following photocatalytic treatment was evaluated using protein phosphatase inhibition assay, which demonstrated that the destruction of nodularin was paralleled by an elimination of toxicity.
