Use of nitrofuran drugs in food-producing animals has been prohibited within the EU because they may represent a public health risk. Monitoring compliance with the ban has focused on the detection of protein-bound nitrofuran metabolites which, in contrast to the parent compounds, are stable and persist in animal tissues. As part of the "FoodBRAND" project, an extensive survey of pork was undertaken across 15 European countries. Samples (n = 1500) purchased at retail outlets were analysed for the nitrofuran metabolites AOZ, AMOZ, AHD and SEM using LC-MS/MS determination of nitrobenzaldehyde derivatives. Limits of quantification for the method were 0.1 mug/kg (AOZ, AMOZ), 0.2 mug/kg (SEM) and 0.5 mug/kg (AHD). Of the 1500 samples tested, measurable residues of nitrofuran metabolites were confirmed in 12 samples (0.8% incidence overall) of which 10 samples were purchased in Portugal (AOZ, 0.3 mug/kg; AMOZ, 0.2-0.6 mug/kg) and one sample each in Italy (AMOZ, 1.0 mug/kg) and Greece (AOZ, 3.0 mug/kg). An extensive investigation of the ferromagnetic compound TlCo2S2 has resulted in new information on the electronic and magnetic structure. Electronic structure calculations showed that magnetic ordering is energetically favorable with a clear driving force for ferromagnetic coupling within the cobalt layers. TlCo2S2 is metallic and the conductivity is due to holes in the valence band. XPS single crystal measurements did not show evidence of mixed oxidation states of cobalt. Neutron powder diffraction resulted in a ferromagnetic structure with the magnetic moment in the ab-plane. The derived magnetic moment of the cobalt atom is 0.65(2) mu(B) at 10 K and is in very good agreement with the value, mu(sat) = 0.65(1) mu(B) at 10 K, inferred from the magnetic hysteresis curve. The effect of photon frequency redistribution by line branching on mass-loss rates for hot luminous stars is investigated. Monte Carlo simulations are carried out for a range of OB star models which show that previous mass-loss calculations which neglect non-resonance line scattering overestimate mass-loss rates for luminous O stars by ~20 per cent. For luminous B stars the effect is somewhat larger, typically ~50 per cent. A Wolf-Rayet star model is used to investigate line branching in the strong wind limit. In this case the effect of line branching is much greater, giving mass-loss rates that are smaller by a factor ~3 from computations which neglect branching.

Wavelet transforms provide basis functions for time-frequency analysis and have properties that are particularly useful for compression of analogue point on wave transient and disturbance power system signals. This paper evaluates the reduction properties of the wavelet transform using real power system data and discusses the application of the reduction method for information transfer in network communications.

This paper examines power quality benchmarks in the electricity supply industry (ESI) and impact of standards for the reduction of voltage dip incidents. The paper considers adherence to particular standards and is supported by several case studies from incidents where voltage dips have been detected and assessed by the power systems division of Scottish Power and where improvements have been implemented to help militate against subsequent incidents.

Serotonin (5-HT) receptor agonists have been reported to produce mydriasis in mice, and miosis in rabbits and humans. However, the underlying mechanisms for this action are unclear. This study was undertaken in an attempt to explore the mechanism by which 5-HT receptors are involved in the modulation of pupillary size in pentobarbital-anesthetized rats. Intravenous administration of the 5-HT receptor agonist, (2R)-(+)-8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin hydrobromide (8-OH-DPAT; 0.003-3 mg/kg), elicited dose-dependent pupillary dilation, which was not affected by section of the preganglionic cervical sympathetic nerve. 8-OH-DPAT-elicited mydriatic responses were attenuated by the selective 5-HT receptor antagonist, N-[2-[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1-piperazinyl]ethyl]-N-2- pyridinylcyclohexanecarboxamide maleate (WAY 100635; 0.3-1 mg/kg, i.v.), as well as by the selective a -adrenoceptor antagonist, (8aR,12aS,13aS)-5,8,8a,9,10,11,12,12a,13,13a-dechydro-3-methoxy-12- (ethylsulfonyl)-6H-isoquino[2,1-g][1,6]naphthyridine hydrochloride (RS 79948; 0.3 mg/kg, i.v.), but not by the selective a -adrenoceptor antagonist, prazosin (0.3 mg/kg, i.v.). Mydriatic responses elicited by the a -adrenoceptor agonist, guanabenz (0.003-0.3 mg/kg, i.v.), were not antagonized by WAY 100635 (0.3-1 mg/kg, i.v.). To determine whether central nervous system (CNS) 5-HT receptors, like a -adrenoceptors, are involved in reflex mydriasis, voltage response curves of pupillary dilation were constructed by stimulation of the sciatic nerve in anesthetized rats. WAY 100635 (1 mg/kg, i.v.) did not antagonize the evoked reflex mydriasis, which, however, was blocked by RS 79948 (0.3 mg/kg, i.v.). Taken together, these results suggest that 8-OH-DPAT produces pupillary dilation in anesthetized rats by stimulating CNS 5-HT receptors, which in turn trigger the release of norepinephrine, presumably from the locus coeruleus. The latter reduces parasympathetic neuronal tone to the iris sphincter muscle by stimulation of postsynaptic a - adrenoceptors within the Edinger-Westphal nucleus. Unlike a - adrenoceptors, 5-HT receptors in the CNS do not mediate reflex mydriasis evoked by sciatic nerve stimulation. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Question. How many deaths were attributable to smoking in 2000 worldwide? Study design. Statistical extrapolation of epidemiological and clinical data. Main results. In the year 2000, about 12% of adults died prematurely from smoking (estimated 4.83 million uncertainty range 3.94-5.93 million). Leading causes of death attributable to smoking were cardiovascular diseases (1.69 million deaths), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (0.97 million deaths) and lung cancer (0.85 million deaths; 71% of lung cancers were smoking related). Smoking related deaths in men were about 3 times more common than women in industrial countries, and about 7 times more common in developing countries. Authors' conclusions. Smoking was a major cause of death worldwide in 2000. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We consider two interlinked non-linear interactions occurring simultaneously in a single chi((2)) crystal. Classical and quantum working regimes are considered and their peculiar properties analysed. In particular, we describe an experiment, realized in the classical regime, that verifies the holographic nature of the process, and predict, for the quantum regime, the generation of a fully inseparable tripartite Gaussian state of light that can be used to support a general 1--> 2 continuous variable telecloning protocol.

We show how our recently proposed scheme for the measurement of the micromaser linewidth, which relates the phase diffusion dynamics of the cavity field to the population statistics of probe atoms, can be applied in the presence of trapping states, where the phase diffusion approximation does not strictly hold. This should allow the observation of the peculiar linewidth oscillations versus atomic pumping which are expected in this regime, and whose origin lies in the quantum nature of the cavity field.

We extend the collective atomic recoil lasing (CARL) model including the effects of friction and diffusion forces acting on the atoms due to the presence of optical molasses fields. The results from this model are consistent with those from a recent experiment by Kruse [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 183601 (2003) ]. In particular, we obtain a threshold condition above which collective backscattering occurs. Using a nonlinear analysis we show that the backscattered field and the bunching evolve to a steady state, in contrast to the nonstationary behavior of the standard CARL model. For a proper choice of the parameters, this steady state can be superfluorescent.
